General Software Discussion / Re: KSO is not free
« Last post by Curt on June 28, 2008, 10:22 AM »
"KSO", well, good to know what to call it...

So... who used it daily and can compare it ...

I have not been using it 'daily', for the simple reason that I prefer my new SoftMaker Office 2008 (because I kind of have purchased it twice!). However, the few days I was using KSO I was quite surprised how similar it is to Microsoft Office 2003. By look, of course, but also in action.

Thanks to Gizmo.

Today you can have Zoner Photo Studio PRO 10 for free for two months at Giveaway of the Day, and then it will degrade to version 10 Xpress. This is a fine offer, but you may not want to take it if you already have purchased version 9 PRO:

WARNING!! If you have Zoner Studio Pro 9 (nine) installed DO NOT install today’s limited version 10, because it will “upgrade” Pro 9 to Pro 10 which you then will loose in two months, and Pro 9 is way better than 10 Xpress.

... I just found Link Shell Extension too: ...
-Perry Mowbray (June 27, 2008, 08:10 AM)

- actually I was using precisely that one, (Schinagl's LSE), for half a year or so, but one day I forgot that a folder shortcut was hard linked this way, so I deleted it, and lost 10 GB files! From that day on I have not being using hard-linking...

..., fixed now.

- yes, it is working just the way I would want a limited version to work.
Thank you so much, Nod5!

So far I have changed the path to Quick Launch > My System > New apps, and just this, to know that I have the shortcuts but they are not cluttering up the Quick Launch toolbar, is a really good felling. I am looking forward to the next chapter! But take your time, I have waited for years, I can easily wait another couple of minutes...  :D  ehh... days.

Here is a cousin, so to speak - though still BETA:

Ulteo Virtual Desktop: your Linux applications on Windows

Enjoy the power of your Linux applications on Windows without the need to reboot!

With Ulteo Virtual Desktop, you just have to run the application you need to use from the Ulteo panel and its window will show up like any other Windows application.

Ulteo Virtual Desktop is free.

Download now
A full Linux system that integrates nicely into Windows

You save time because you can have both Windows and Linux applications integrated into a single desktop. Additionally, the Ulteo Virtual Desktop is a safe and virus-free place. It will even self-upgrade regularly with latest version of the system and its applications.

It's been designed for individuals and corporate users who need to use both Linux and Windows applications within the same desktop environement.
Which applications are supported?

A full range of Linux applications are supported in the standard version.

At the moment, you will find a selection of applications that include:

    * Firefox web browser enabled with Flash & Java
    * The full OpenOffice.org office suite that can deal with your MS Office documents
    * KPdf to deal with your PDF documents
    * Kopete: the multi-Instant Messaging software that supports MSN and other protocols
    * Skype
    * Thunderbird + Enigmail (so you can encrypt your emails!)
    * Gimp and Digikam to manage your pictures
    * Inkscape and Scribus to create great graphics and newspapers
    * and... many others!

From the Ulteo "My Digital Life" panel, you can add new "application balls", such as additional desktop application, games and soon development applications! It's very easy to add or remove and always leave a clean system.

Curt, I made Shortcutty, http://nod5.dcmember....com/shortcutty.html
... another script is needed ... I can put that together too ...

@ Nod5 - wow, BOTH your scripts sounds perfect to me for the job.
I am truly looking forward to try them. But right now I am not able to even try the first one, because all I get is a File Not Found / 404

@ Phil - thanks a lot for looking for an answer.
However, I read the rest of the thread and will therefore not try skrommel's.

Do take note that this complimentary free genuine Microsoft Office Accouting Professional 2008 product key is meant for members of Microsoft Professional Accountants’ Network and not everyone. Trust me, even if you manage to get the free license, this software would be quite useless to you unless you know accounting. Microsoft Office Accounting is not like the normal Microsoft Office

Thanks, Perry - but speaking of 'scripts', SnapFolders wouldn't work in my setup - some conflict of a kind, I guess, though it suggest that I get the latest script-something from MS. The problem must be something else,  for I am confident my script version is newer than the one Matts was using back in 2005.

Thanks to all of you, and one extra thank you to Perry for writing Nirsofer! I have tried, though, to write him some time ago about something different, but I cannot remember getting an answer. I hope you have better luck.

The 'Add to Quick Launch' is incorporated in Send To Toys, so I won't 'add' that one. And what's more, the situation was if I wanted to add a lot of shortcuts - and having a lot of shortcuts placed at the same time in Quick Launch toolbar even for a couple of minutes will simply look terrifying! They MUST be transported further / deeper inside True Launch at once! (True Launch > Audio+Video, or True Launch > Foto) - like this:

truelaunch1.gif

- so I am not too sure it would help to use NirSoft's version either, the present or the maybe upcoming, because he is so far only using fixed locations. But maybe if the user could add dozens of fixed locations?

jgpaiva is right on the spot. I use True Launch Bar (replacing Windows' Quick Launch) and like to have shortcuts there for all of my programs. SendTo will send a shortcut to Quick Launch all right, but I will have to first create the link myself, and after it has been sent to Quick Launch I will have to move it further / deeper inside True Launch Bar. This takes too long, when all I really would need is for a program like Piky Basket to be able to first create the shortcut (right-click file > create shortcut) and put in the basket / memory, and later on drop the shortcut wherever (True Launch Bar or elsewhere) I meanwhile have navigated to.

- to make a simple story more complicated...  :-[

all the disclaimers and treating people as stupid cattle is getting out of hand.

Reminds me of a girl friend of mine, that constantly refuses to install any new programs on her Vista because the pop-up says it could be dangerous.

You could of course all just leave those foolish countries... but then again, I am afraid foolishness in general is spreading! Not only "more people = more fools", but also "bigger cities and more TV channels = more foolishness per fool".

- you may have been right, Perry Mowbray, but now there is a new picture, and it is just fine. Though they didn't take the time and effort to first cleanse the wall it is easy to read, and the colours blend fine with the page itself, which is still getting even better.

Creating the shortcuts, I noticed that 2 programs are stamped year 2006, 19 are stamped year 2007, and the remaining 17 programs are stamped year 2008. I decided to open each and every of them at once and have a closer look, and because of what I leaned I finally understood what all this is about. This is NOT about you and me, but about giving aid to the poor (maybe more precisely, any poor who can read English or Afrikaans). This is a package for the poor with access only to whatever computers we might have dumped in the prior millennium, and it is (also) a collection of programs for all the millions of people who cannot order software because they cannot get a credit card. And with this point of view in mind, I will not be testing this further, because the package was never meant for me in the first place, so why should (you or) the author care about what I would think of his programs?

I think it is a fine job you are doing, Carol, and the page is really getting better and better. However, a minor detail: Do you have the original wall.jpg image? The displayed copy was compressed wrongly or too hard; the text is a little too hard / difficult to read.

General Software Discussion / Any "Create shortcuts, and move them" thingy?
« Last post by Curt on June 21, 2008, 04:35 AM »
Yesterday I installed a package of many small programs, and was reminded that I quite often have wanted a 'thingy' which could create and move a shortcut in one go. For this reason I wrote the author of Piky Basket ("Copy, Copy, Copy, Paste") and asked for a new feature: >"Create shortcut and put in basket" and several new shortcuts later: "Drop / paste  shortcuts here"<. He liked the idea and said it will "mostly" be added to an upcoming new version (the program has not been updated for several years)! I know users of some third party file managers already have a part of this feature, "stack", but I will like to have all of the feature, and to have it now, and to have it in Explorer - so I am asking if 'you' know of an application with such a feature for the standard Explorer, please?

The toolbar I was babbling about, Startup Desktop, somehow doesn't like the environment on my PC. It will start okay, but suddenly it will stop working, and restarting it doesn't help. The major problem is that it is vital for the package, it is The Central Station.

5'thElement.gif

I will not yet stop testing this package, but I will first have to "cheat" and create a new XP toolbar with all the same shortcuts. Maybe tomorrow.
