I think it will happen much much earlier. Next AOL Time Warner et al. will enter the "market".

It has already happened...take a look at the new netscape.com.

Yeah, but it should keep track of the focused window (the work window).
Eg: when visual c++ is focused, the alarm counter doesn't count, but it starts counting down as soon as the window goes out of focus.
You'd have to be able to define the 'work' window. Otherwise the alarm would go off while working.

whoa...that sounds almost like a coding snack request  ;)

and a great idea too!

This can work too:

http://img274.imageshack.us/img274/4869/sticky5st.jpg

It has an alarm that is set to go off once per hour. I find that a real sticky on the monitor either falls off and becomes a cat toy or I soon become blind to it and don't notice it any more.

and I was just thinking...

This could be a useful purpose for Dr Windows. Instead of a prank full of silly messages that distract, it can be a useful tool full of fun reminders to help keep your focus.

Living Room / Dangerous Windows shortcut 'trick'
« Last post by app103 on July 03, 2006, 02:59 AM »
http://www.zdnet.com...3341,39259246,00.htm

This week I learned about a "trick" that you can do in Windows which, as far as I am concerned, is a serious security risk.

In an article written by Infoworld's Roger Grimes, he describes a "feature" in Windows that allowed me to run an executable file by simply typing a Web address into Internet Explorer.

Test it yourself:

* Right click on the Desktop and create a new Shortcut
* Point the shortcut to an executable -- such as c:windowssystem32calc.exe
* Call the shortcut www.microsoft.com
* Start Internet Explorer and type "www.microsoft.com" into the address bar

For the past few years, banks have been advising their customers to type their online banking URL into the browser -- instead of clicking on a link that may be a phishing scam.

If a piece of malware created this kind of shortcut, called it your online bank's name and then pointed the shortcut to a malicious file, the next time someone used that computer and, using the banks advice, tried to log on to their online bank, they would execute the malicious file.

I have noticed this behavior in IE before and even have been annoyed at the autocomplete trying to suggest applications for me to run or other files for me to open instead of a website I want to visit. This seems to be something specific to some Windows versions as this is not an issue in IE 6 on 9x.

I never thought of the security risks this could pose to a user. I just thought it was annoying. I have been very sensitive to the differences between XP and WinME, since I am a new XP user. And it seems the more I use XP, the more I have to be annoyed with...or even afraid of.

Be careful with this one.

then you'd need to do some http tunneling to get past it

You mean to tell me that downloading Linux distros with a torrent is now against the law in Spain?

I hate when the media, the RIAA, various governments, etc, paint the picture of P2P only having illegal uses and all P2P users being criminals.

I have seen independent unsigned bands with chatrooms sharing their own files, developer groups discussing projects in a chat environment with their latest releases offered for multi-source download by just browsing a member in the room. (irc isn't quite the same when it comes to this)

I have friends that run a Linux room on a P2P network, offering advice, various distros, burning & installing instructions, software recommendations, open source applications they wrote, plenty of help...even spoon feeding those having a lot of trouble...all in Italian.

It's nice to be able to talk to a developer as you are downloading his latest release and get involved in a project by tossing ideas around in the chatroom.

The ProtoRelay bot that has been used a bit lately in DC's irc channel is the result of P2P. It can relay conversations in chatrooms between many protocols, irc, WinMX, open nap, Ares...and soon more. This project wouldn't have happened if there was no P2P.

Hell...I wouldn't be programming if it wasn't for P2P. Some of the best stuff shared through P2P isn't even files...it's information, encouragement, inspiration...which is the thing of most value offered on P2P.

I have a friend that operates a programming school, in a chatroom on Ares with chat server software he wrote with the purpose of teaching in mind. He gives programming lessons there! And his love for programming is infectious...everyone that meets him will want to become a programmer...like I did. I thought I couldn't do it...he showed me I can. And all the times I was so frustrated that I wanted to give up, he wouldn't let me. Making P2P illegal makes his school illegal and deprives many of the encouragement and inspiration he offers.

How dare they do that!

AOL has offered something to it's members only for quite a few years called AOL Mall, where you can shop with various participating merchants that have signed on to their service, as if it was all one big online store.

You can buy from sites like Office Depot and Amazon.com right from the Mall page at the same time and it is all put into one big "AOL shopping cart" and all shipping info, etc is sent to the appropriate site at checkout. AOL handles the transactions and you get a detailed receipt of your purchases emailed to you and it is billed to your credit card or checking account (or even your phone bill if that is your pre-arranged payment method) when they bill you for your AOL account.

The whole Mall site is set up nicely with seasonal shopping articles and sites advertising their specials right on the front page. Like an article on home decorating would include items from a variety of participating merchants...you wouldn't have to wander all over the web to find all the stuff that goes together.

It's fully searchable for specific items and you can sort by price...much in the way Froogle can....great for comparison shopping.

They even have wishlists and the ability to be able to IM another AOL member the Mall page you are looking at so 2 people can shop together. And a gift suggestion feature where you can select "For Her", "For Him", "For Kids", "Under $50", etc.

The merchant list is a bit limited, but the ones they do have are the bigger more well known ones with a good reputation and not the little fly-by-nights that might attempt to rip you off.

I am sure the merchants that participate pay a fee to AOL to be included and AOL probably gets a percentage of all transactions they handle for their merchants.

Now if Google made something like that available and incorporated it into Froogle, that would be very cool.

Free Delphi 6 Personal (matches the BCB 6 personal)

http://www.borland.p.../delphi6personal.exe

You still have to visit the Borland site to get a free key for it though.

Just go to the Delphi Downloads section and at the bottom click the link for the CD-key only...fill out a short survey and make an account.  They will email you the key and you can get all the updates available for D6 Personal too.

You can get the key to Delphi Personal 7, that Rover posted the link to, there too.

Then go here and select the updates you want and log into your account you made to get them.

You will have to register to use this one and you will get your sign as a .pdf file.

These are meant for use in the workplace and comply with industry standards for warning signs.

And it's free! (they accept donations)

Are these in their online games? or in the ones you download & install and they make you pay for?

I, for one, do not feel like paying to see ads. Buying adware is crazy.

Now if they wanted to make it an online game and it be playable for free, this would be a much better approach to ads within games:

http://www.neopets.c...mes/trix/game1.phtml

Instead of interrupting a game to show you an ad, make the advertising part of the game, itself.

In a better quality game, the advertising can be for numerous products within the same game and be much more sophisticated and subtle, having an almost subliminal effect.

Almost like if Coke or Pepsi pays for a spot in a movie where a character will drink one and the label will be clearly shown and not just merely suggested. Do this a few times a within a game and after constant playing of that game, it will definitely have a suggestive effect.

A nice free & legal copy of C++ Builder 6 Personal here:

http://ncsp.forum.no...la;asset_id=206;ref=

Click 'I agree' and it's yours.

It is part of a Nokia S60 SDK but you don't have to install that part, you can just install the IDE.

There is a serial pre-embedded into it...you don't have to change a thing or register with Borland to get a different one (you can if you want, I guess)...just install & enjoy.

Speaking of the stupidity of crowds, here is one that will make you laugh:

This website popped up more than 6 months ago and looked rather mysterious:

http://www.eon8.org/

You probably won't be able to reach it and if you can you will not see what visitors saw before today.

Google's cache shows what it looked like before.

Many speculated as to the purpose of that site, thinking all kinds of insane things:

We were amazed to discover that the site was instantly linked with terrorism, simply for the fact that it seems mysterious. Evil was the number one first impression people had of the site, in spite of the fact that there are no threats on the site. The only thing Eon 8 says is "We don't want you here". Nothing else.
Other less disappointing opinions were social experimentation (which was correct), James Bond movie viral marketing, and promotions for video games.
For many people, being faced with a countdown timer was an instant reason to try to shut down or hack the site. This is a worrying reaction, that if someone doesn't understand something they must destroy it. As a result, the servers have been hit quite hard these last few days, but luckily 99% of the 'hackers' could easily be described as 'l4me n00bs'.
Another worrying example of paranoia was how quickly people would jump to conclusions, such as telephoning the registered owner of a dog seen in a photograph on a server that hosts a page that links to eon8.

Last night the countdown ran out and the truth was revealed.

http://24-7gaming.net/$/eon8/deployed21b.html  (mirror of original)

and the post from unfiction.com that is referred to in the creator's message:

http://forums.unfict...iewtopic.php?t=15629

When it was found to be a hoax or experiment, the wikipedia page related to it was promptly deleted by vandals and has since been restored & locked :

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eon8

Even jokes about it have popped up, speculating what it all was supposed to mean:

http://uncyclopedia.org/wiki/Eon8
(others links cane be found on the wikipedia page)

Shortly before the countdown ran out last night, there was an irc channel on the GameSurge network (#eon-8) that had over 1000 people in it gathering together to wait & see what would happen. When it was all revealed they went nuts spamming the room with obscenities, totally upset that the world didn't come to an end.

and here is a rather interesting article on the whole thing:

http://www.vitalsecu...07/eon8-summary.html

So what is it that 'normal rational people' do when they don't understand something? They fear it, assume all kinds of untruths, and seek to destroy it.

So much for 'crowd wisdom'.

The creator never revealed why he did this experiment, only implying that he was curious what would happen and just felt like doing it.

General Software Discussion / Re: Will you upgrade to Microsoft Office 2007?
« Last post by app103 on July 01, 2006, 12:17 PM »
I will probably be sticking with my copies of Office 97 and 602 Pro.

I don't use the software enough any more to make buying a new version practical. I still didn't get my money's worth from what I already have. I'll consider an upgrade when what I have won't run under whatever operating system I have installed.

I can't afford to waste my money on something that won't get used, again.

My initial purchase of Office 97 some years back was mainly for my daughter who was a student at the time. It was a waste of my money, as I soon discovered her using the AOL email proggie as a substitute for a word processor.  :o

Since Passkeeper won't allow me to make any new entries any more, I figured I'd give this one a try. It' really nice!

And it's still small enough to fit on a floppy for when I go to my dad's house.

The idea that you can create categories for different types of accounts is great. I was able to put all my accounts and software serials all in the same program instead of having 2 separate copies of Passkeeper.

One thing I didn't notice was an automatic "save on quit" feature. Is there one?

Great review Josh.

General Software Discussion / Re: Why is so much software cracked?
« Last post by app103 on June 25, 2006, 12:41 PM »

I want to reiterate my position:
It's important for us all to support authors+companies financially for their work.  If people simply take what they can, and only pay/contribute when they are forced to - i do believe that we will get what we deserve, which is that only the most agressive, restrictive and paranoid companies will profit.  if we instead endeavor to act morally, and support authors who do good work, both in commercial and free software, we will ensure that they thrive and continue to do good work.  it's important that when we see someone doing good work, we stand up and support them, as best we can.

I agree...but a discussion like this can shed light and offer some food for thought...for both developers and software users.

and relevant to this topic is an old letter that is in the public domain:

An Open Letter to Hobbyists
William "Bill" Henry Gates III  - 3 Feb 1976

To me, the most critical thing in the hobby market right now is the lack of good software courses, books and software itself.
Without good software and an owner who understands programming, a hobby computer is wasted. Will quality software be
written for the hobby market?

Almost a year ago, Paul Allen and myself, expecting the hobby market to expand, hired Monte Davidoff and developed Altair
BASIC. Though the initial work took only two months, the three of us have spent most of the last year documenting, improving
and adding features to BASIC. Now we have 4K, 8K, EXTENDED, ROM and DISK BASIC. The value of the computer time we
have used exceeds $40,000.

The feedback we have gotten from the hundreds of people who say they are using BASIC has all been positive. Two surprising
things are apparent, however, 1) Most of these "users" never bought BASIC (less than 10% of all Altair owners have bought BASIC),
and 2) The amount of royalties we have received from sales to hobbyists makes the time spent on Altair BASIC worth less than $2
an hour.

Why is this? As the majority of hobbyists must be aware, most of you steal your software. Hardware must be paid for, but software
is something to share. Who cares if the people who worked on it get paid?

Is this fair? One thing you don't do by stealing software is get back at MITS for some problem you may have had. MITS doesn't make
money selling software. The royalty paid to us, the manual, the tape and the overhead make it a break-even operation. One thing you
do do is prevent good software from being written. Who can afford to do professional work for nothing? What hobbyist can put 3-man
years into programming, finding all bugs, documenting his product and distribute for free? The fact is, no one besides us has invested
a lot of money in hobby software. We have written 6800 BASIC, and are writing 8080 APL and 6800 APL, but there is very little incentive
to make this software available to hobbyists. Most directly, the thing you do is theft.

What about the guys who re-sell Altair BASIC, aren't they making money on hobby software? Yes, but those who have been reported
to us may lose in the end. They are the ones who give hobbyists a bad name, and should be kicked out of any club meeting they show
up at.

I would appreciate letters from any one who wants to pay up, or has a suggestion or comment. Just write to me at 1180 Alvarado SE,
#114, Albuquerque, New Mexico, 87108. Nothing would please me more than being able to hire ten programmers and deluge the hobby
market with good software.

Seems piracy was rampant back in 1976 too.

jgpaiva helped me figure out the math for the settings in FadingTaskbar. (thanks )

When I tested it by turning on flashing in xchat, it seemed to work well. But when a message came in on GTalk, it failed...the taskbar flew out as it always had.  :(

It just doesn't want to work with those pesky messaging clients.

I am starting to get the feeling I am going to be dealing with this annoyance forever...or go back to 9x (not a real option).

minimize to system tray should do it.

try Minimizer-XP or your other favorite Minimize to Tray freeware/applications, once minimize to tray all of them will stop flashing.

edit: 4t Tray Minimizer Free/Pro 4.27 free! is also very nice, lighter than Minimizer-XP.

Thanks for your idea, but instant messaging programs are minimized to the tray already by default...and they are what causes the problem. So I am not sure minimizing something to tray that is already there would help.

« Last post by app103 on June 24, 2006, 04:50 PM »
Usually an idea will sit in my mind for a bit while I imagine what it looks like, what it does, and imagine myself as the user. I literally mentally use my software over & over.

Then I start drawing doodles in a notebook just not to forget what I am seeing in my mind's eye.

After a few days, it becomes more refined...I start seeing how things behind the GUI will work...start making more textual notes to myself...a list of questions to answer, things to research.

Then I write my crazy looking pseudocode....and make longer lists of questions to answer....and start researching for answers and saving links.

At some point when I feel my GUI vision is ok, I will start work on that.

Sooner or later I get to the actual code...and have lists of links to info I researched to answer my questions from my list to guide me as I code.

When I think it's finished...I use it...a lot. That's when I compare my vision I had in the beginning to what I have created...see if they match up...if there is room for improvements..then fix it, because it's never quite what I meant.

This is why I am such a slow coder and work best alone.
