That's a good idea, also!

google does the same thing for gmail.

Can you clarify what you are saying?

Google has an extension that makes it the default handler for mail.  It is not a browser, but a little app that sits in your tray.  I think they may have deprecated it so you have to use google talk (which is registered the same way).

wraith, I converted to mobi and read it on my tablet. Please tell me you're going to epublish and have Createspace make a paperback... it's really excellent!

Thanks! :)  A lot depends on if I can get it done by the deadline and if it's accepted.  If it is, then this will serve as the intro and I have an idea how the rest of the book will go.  If not, I have the idea of either making it a stand-alone introduction and working on the book as a separate idea, or making it the first few chapters of the book.  But thanks- that does good to hear :)

I wonder if it would be possible to make a little utility that is eligible to register itself as a default mail handler, and which could invoke a browser-based mail thing like aol or gmail (presumably by opening a url with the recipient in the url)?  Might have some limitations such as not being able to carry over the body of the message, but that might not be important for most uses?

It is... google does the same thing for gmail.

Thoughts on http://www.amazon.co...ess-N-Router-RT-N56U ?

You cut off a bit much when trying to cut off the referrals.  The first two groups after that are required (especially as the last is the stock number).

@mouser - Buying an upgraded unit is not a bad idea. The newer routers have come a long way since the WRT-54GL. And they now have the 802.11n and (in some models) the newer 802.11ac(draft). You'll need new wireless adapters to take advantage of those. But almost everything in the last year or so comes stock with 'n' support so that's usually not an issue. The difference in range and throughput can be substantial.

802.11ac is still in draft so I wouldn't be too quick to adopt it at this point.

I'm partial to the TEW-812DRU aka Trendnet AC1750 at this point - which has support for WDS - so if you ever do need a second WAP for better coverage, integrating a second unit (that also supports WDS) into the wireless backbone the AC1750 creates is a piece of cake.

The Netgear 750 is also a good choice despite my long standing reservations about Netgear products in general. I have several of these at client sites, and they've been very reliable so far.

I have this one: http://www.amazon.co...outer/dp/B0041LYY6K/

Do you think its nearing time for me to upgrade if it's working fine right now?
5557
I'm surprised you didn't have it with the stock firmware- I had that same router and had that same problem stock.  And yes, it's just the wireless devices that I have the problem with.  I think that something gets bollixed in configuration that is maintained in state, and turning off the interface doesn't necessarily reset that.  At least, that's my theory.

General Software Discussion / Re: What do non-programmers need to automate?
« Last post by wraith808 on August 29, 2013, 10:02 AM »
Non-technical people use automation a lot where I work:
1. Webscraping on a schedule, i.e. every day, check this page or this download link and download/harvest the information.  Good for financial updates.
2. Webscraping when things change.  Same as above, but slightly more complicated because it has to see when things change.
3. Firing off an application/process when a file appears in a folder (or you get a specified e-mail).
4. Automating a tedious process in a program that consists of a series of reproducible steps.

Basically, putting all of that together can help to create a rudimentary workflow with a minimum of developer work/intervention.  Developers can also create more complicated components and the non-tech use those component interfaces to do something that an automation system wouldn't be able to accomplish.

What router is it?  I have that problem with my router also... another alternative to rebooting your PC is to restart the router.

I'm keeping it updated on dropbox in several formats: https://www.dropbox....x61pgibl7/NuWnSvXsB3

There's also a google doc that 4wd is already using for comments; if you're interested, PM me an e-mail address and I'll share it with you.

Another example of "emergency" powers being abused

"The UK has a rather lopsided extradition arrangement with the US that was put in place in the context of the 'war on terror'. Under the arrangement, the US can demand the extradition of a UK citizen to face charges there without probable cause. The reverse does not apply."

Some TV shows may qualify as "atrocities" but it strikes me as abusing the "arrangement" to use it to demand extradition of this guy. Isn't there any way of repealing it? Or at least balancing it out?

THIS.  I hate that this set precedent. :(

Done in regards to sharing the Google Doc, and annoying with the dropbox.  Apparently, unless you download a zip, it autoconverts to pdf.  I don't know when they started doing that- but it's stupid and annoying.

What you have to do to get it to download in the original format is to click on it and let it open as pdf... then in the upper right hand corner, there is a download button- that downloads it in the original format.

I'm not opposed to anything :)  How did you guys set it up for K?  Was it a Google Doc with the contents of the document?  Or was the google doc just a list of the edits?

The NYPD Division of Un-American Activities

Now there's a name that's more than just a bit chilling. All they need now is a list of properly American Activities,  a "study" that shows the "proper" participation levels, and they should be ready to start rounding up people "decenters" in no time.

Glad I wasn't the only one that caught that.  McCarthyism, anyone?  What kind of -ism will it be called this time?

Any help at all will be ... well, helpful!  And very much appreciated!  This is the first time I've really tried to publish anything anywhere other than just my site, so I'm a bit nervous :)  I've sent you the link... I'm writing it in Yarny, and it lets you share snippets so I've done it that way.  If you'd rather another format, I can do that too.  And you can post any feedback here.  Thanks again!

I'm putting together a submission for an anthology from the Upgraded Kickstarter:
http://www.kickstart...dited-by-neil-clarke

http://neil-clarke.c...bmission_guidelines/

I was looking for some readers- I've finished the first chapter and wanted to get some feedback as I go into the second (looking at 3 chapters, approx 7500 words).

My submission is called 'Forgotten Heroes', and I was wondering if anyone would like to read/give feedback?  Let me know, and I'll e-mail you what I've written.  I will warn you that the first chapter might seem jingoistic, but just hang in there... it's a progression :)

Living Room / Ballmer Stepping Down
« Last post by wraith808 on August 23, 2013, 09:55 AM »
Surprised this hasn't already been mentioned:

Microsoft: Steve Ballmer stepping down within a year

Between Windows 8 and XBox One, I knew that there would be heads to roll at a very high level.  I even hoped for this.  But now, I have to wonder... will this mean that things will get better... or worse?

As a C# developer, I particularly wonder, even as I start to look at Ruby, Clojure, and other technologies.
