Wahoo!
5552
There's a book I want.

Used: $20
Digital: $40

How is it possible for the "mash a tree up into pulp and dehydrate it and put ink on it and glue it together" version to cost less than the "ones and zeros" version which can be duplicated almost infinitely, almost instantaneously, and at almost no extra cost?

EDIT: The list price for the book, new, is $50 but it's on Amazon right now for less than $32.

A pacifist thief who attacks anyone who innocently knocks on his door.

It runs a lot better for me now, but the audio still has problems. It crackles and plays a bit late, but at least the framerate is improved.

Still, got bored around level 20.

« Last post by Deozaan on March 28, 2011, 10:33 PM »
So, looking at the deck, it seems like you could play this game with an ordinary deck of cards. Cody and his Uncle take the place of the Jokers. Is that right?
5556
Just curious: Is there a reason why you don't put the source on one of the better-known online open source repositories? Github, Bitbucket.org, SourceForge, code.google.com, etc.?

Also, what license is the source for PythonProtoCards released under?

Commonly used terms

Micro: the wonderful miracle of managing single or small groups of units to make them so much more than they would without your attention. For example, marine scoot-and-shoot can save them from banelings, marauders kiting zealots with their slow ability, zerglings properly surrounding an army so they cannot run away, Protoss voidrays maintaining their charge (which makes them far more destructive) by shooting something for a brief second during a lull in combat, etc.

What is scoot-and-shoot? What is kiting?

No fair introducing confusing jargon while explaining commonly used jargon.

I use the PortableApps.com launcher (in my Dropbox directory), then manually pin a shortcut to the start menu on each PC.

If you're using portable applications that aren't available from PortableApps.com, you could also put them in the PortableApps.com "Documents" directory and use the launcher's button to quickly access that directory.

Wow! The Swype beta is finally available for anyone! I never thought I'd get Swype on my phone. Thanks for posting that.

Deozaan, you should check out G1 at xda-developers. There are alternative ROMs being developed there. I notice one for Gingerbread.

My phone is seriously underpowered for Android 2.2. It's so sluggish. . . I'm considering going back but I don't want to lose all the cool features. Maybe there's a nice speedy Gingerbread ROM for the G1 at xda-dev. Hey, I can dream right? Thanks for reminding me about this great resource. :)

EDIT: HOLY CARP! My dream came true! I found this great Gingerbread Yoshi ROM that is super speedy! I dare say my phone is now faster than my wife's! We both have G1s, but hers is still on the "Stock" Android 1.6. I seriously can't believe how fast this thing is.

General Software Discussion / Re: What Android Apps Do You Use?
« Last post by Deozaan on March 24, 2011, 02:34 AM »
I've got an Android G1, which is normally limited to Android 1.6. So, by far the most useful thing I use on my phone is CyanogenMod, which allows me to put Android 2.2 on my phone. Unfortunately the G1 is no longer being supported with newer versions of CM.

As for apps I find most useful (not counting included Google apps like Gmail, Calendar, GTalk, Maps, Navigation, etc.):

  • AndChat - An IRC client.
  • Barcode Scanner - Useful for QR codes or to do price checks at local stores (with the Google Shopper app).
  • Barnacle WiFi Tether - CyanogenMod allows me to tether my phone's internet via USB. Barnacle lets me use my phone as a WiFi access point.
  • OI File Manager - I really only use this when a song fails to download correctly in Subsonic and I need to delete it to get it to download again.
  • ING Direct's Free ATM Finder - This helps me find nearby ATMs that don't charge extra fees. (And while searching for this, I just found a new ING Direct app that will let me check my balance(s) and do other banking things. I'll have to check that one out!
  • Subsonic - Streams music and videos from my Subsonic server running on my computer.
  • Super BT Mono Pro - Converts all audio to mono so that I can listen to music on my phone via my bluetooth earpiece. This one cost a few dollars, but there's a free trial available. Also, I use the one made for CyanogenMod. If this is something you have a use for, make sure to test the trial version out to verify that it works. It's a bit finicky, and obviously music doesn't sound very good in mono over BT, but it's better than nothing.
  • Google Voice - This wasn't available (and thus wasn't included) when the G1 came out. It sure is awesome though!
  • Google Chrome to Phone - Sends a page in your PC's browser to your phone.

My phone has very limited internal storage, so that's about all I can fit on there without running out of space. Here are some other apps I've found useful/fun/interesting but don't currently have installed either due to space constraints or I just don't use them often enough:

Oddly enough, I don't use my phone much for games. Probably because it can't handle much of anything on the market, but also because I'm usually within 30 feet of a much more powerful gaming machine should the desire arise. But I have downloaded a couple games/game related apps:

Also, AppBrain.com is a handy site for searching/tracking/organizing apps you have or want. They even have an app that lets you synchronize your apps on your phone with their website, or automatically download the ones you've marked for installation from their website. This was especially useful before the recent Android Market upgrades that let you search, buy, and install from the official Android Market on your PC, but it still does have a couple of features that are better than the Android Market, such as tracking price history, creating lists to organize apps, etc.

I think this is really cool. If I made any software that updated regularly, I'd definitely use this and give you feedback. But since I don't, all I can do is cheer you on from the sidelines.

I really like DcuHelper and DcUpdater. :D

Living Room / Re: Android tablets to rival iPad
« Last post by Deozaan on March 23, 2011, 09:36 PM »
So I have a hard time contributing to a discussion where people discuss laptops/desktops and tablets as if they are comparable.

Here's how they are comparable to me:

I want a pretty good Core i7 PC. I also want a pretty good Android Tablet.

Given that they both cost (about) the same, if I had to choose between them, then I'm totally choosing the Core i7 PC. On the other hand, if the Xoom was about $400 then I would probably postpone my Core i7 purchase for later and get the tablet.

It's not worth it to me to get such a relatively limited "compact car" for the same price as the much more powerful "truck" when I want both but can only choose one.

You don't know how bad I want a store of my own...

And you know what I would call it?

App's Store, of course!  :D

That reminds me of that guy named Michael Rowe who was a programmer, and made a website called mikerowesoft.com. I believe that Microsoft forced him to take down the domain or something similar.

Today's Woot is a Viewsonic 10.1" gTablet (Android 2.2) for $280.

http://www.woot.com/

Looks pretty sweet!

EDIT: Oh, and:

I've been pricing out a new machine... show me how you can have a pretty good Core-i7 for $800, please. :)

I said "about $800" because I was thinking I could recycle some old PC parts like a case, DVD-writer, HDDs, etc. I have an older "Wish List" on NewEgg that would cost ~$875 for a Core i7 2600K, 16 GB RAM, GeForce GTX 460 Fermi, Intel P67 mobo, and an Antec 650W PSU. But it looks like a few things could be upgraded (like a GTX 550 Fermi) and still keep approximately the same price.

That's not top of the line, but I would consider that a "pretty good Core i7" for about $800.

but it needs to be about 1/2 the price.

Isn't that true for all the real good stuff :tellme:

Yes, it would be nice for all the real good stuff to be half price, but that doesn't mean that all the good stuff is overpriced. I do think the Xoom is way overpriced. For about $800 I could have a pretty nice Core i7 2600K desktop machine. A comparatively limited dual core tablet should only cost around $400 IMO.

I don't just think it would be nice for the Xoom to be about half price, I think it really needs to be about half price. But I'm certainly no expert. I'm just a consumer who saw the price and thought Apple's prices were tame in comparison.

The Motorolla Xoom looks awesome, but it needs to be about 1/2 the price.

The Archos 101 also looks pretty good, but it doesn't have the option for cellular data plan. :-/

Toshiba Tablet looks cool, but who knows what it will cost...

I need these awesome tablets to be out 6 months ago so they'll be affordable in 2-3 months when I want to buy one.  :D

This game looks fun. It's on sale (pre-order) for $7.50 right now or the 4-pack comes to $6.75 per person. I've got myself and 2 other people already committed to the 4-pack, so we need one more person. Anyone interested? 4-Pack ordered. Thanks!

Okay, this is weird. I shut down my netbook to take it somewhere, and when I booted back into PCLinuxOS it had the background image and the "bar thingy" again. The weird thing is that I've rebooted multiple times before and it always had the nothingness. But now every time I boot it up and has the wallpaper and bar thingy.

And it doesn't seem to take up any more RAM to show those things.

Silly. The moon is always the same size.

It just appears larger or smaller depending on sciency stuff like perigee.

Thanks for the info! I'll be sure to take a look! If the clouds ever go away...
