General Software Discussion / Re: Google Chrome: Time for a Second Chance?
« Last post by MilesAhead on November 09, 2010, 02:44 PM »
btw for those using Chromium nightly builds.. I haven't tracked down the build number, but at some point after 63747, Control-Shift-Click will not open a new Tab in Foreground.

I backed off to 63747 but then got the "you cannot use this profile because it's for a newer version of chrome" yadda yadda.  Copying an old profile fixed that.  So I didn't have to reconfigure Speed Dial and all the rest of it.

I tried the latest nightly build and it's still broken.

edit: I submitted a bug report.  See what happens.

General Software Discussion / Re: Filter directory tree by file type?
« Last post by MilesAhead on November 08, 2010, 02:28 PM »
FreeCommander has a filter but it's only for the current folder. It won't remove folders from the tree. I think the reason they don't is it's slow. FreeCommander has a Toolbar Icon to show folder sizes. It's off by default because recursively descending through the folder tree is slow. Essentially you are doing a FindFirstFile..FindNextFile processing of every file on the drive.  On the system partition that's easily several hundred thousand files.

Just open a command prompt to C:> and do
dir /s

command and watch it go on for minutes.

edit: just for chuckles I ran it on my Vista64 machine.  Took about 3 min 24 sec and listed over 215,000 files.

Might be a nice idea for a tool that does indexing though. Especially if the tree didn't get changed that often.  Like some data storage without a lot of deletions.

I just noticed another utility for saving Windows layout. I haven't tried it myself.  The description makes it sound pretty versatile as far as windows matching:

General Software Discussion / Re: Scite loses caption bar in Windows Seven?
« Last post by MilesAhead on November 07, 2010, 07:46 PM »
I dunno'.  I stuck the mouse pointer off the top of the screen and double-clicked. I got the caption bar back.  Then I could resize.  But it still won't open to the size and positions in the global properties file. It just opens to the last position when closed. Weird.

Edit: NirCmd came in handy. I used the 'win' command to set the window position and size to match the setting in the global properties file.  At least for the moment it opens in the size and position I want.  Turns out I could have used my own rap.exe (run and position) to do the same thing.  Been so long since I used it I totally forgot the name of the thing.   :-[

btw-I removed Run And Place Utilities. There are other apps that do it better. I was new to AutoIt3 at the time and the command line params are just a mess. Not worth fixing. :)

Don't know what that "full screen" feature is about but I don't want to find out either. :)

Nope.  It's bizarre because there seems to be no command to go out of full screen mode.  I changed global properties back.  The width and height got changed to -1 like when it's first installed.  Made no difference. Copied the folder from my other machine. I don't understand hiding the caption bar. What can you fit one more line of text?  It's almost like it's booby trapped.

« Last post by MilesAhead on November 07, 2010, 05:50 PM »
Don't know what happened. I was using Scite4AutoIt3 and commented a block.  The editor went full screen with no caption bar. I copied the entire scite folder from AutoIt3 install from another machine where it's working properly. No joy. Uninstall/reinstall no getting it back. I assume it's got some stupid setting in the registry to take up all the desktop.  Anyone know how to get it so I can resize it again? Hitting F11 only covers and uncovers the TaskBar.

Man what a waste of time! I've been screwing with this for 2 hours now.

I haven't tried any of them.  I've seen the use of them on Japanese TV shows especially, years before the push started in the USA. I wonder if it's something to do with outsourcing?  The Japanese lost of lot of jobs to Korea. Now we have lost manufacturing jobs to China.  The competition gets tougher for remaining jobs so people inject steroids to avoid being cut? :)

I think what happened is back when I first got DVD-RB and was using other tools that used HC, I tried settings less than Best and could see inferior results.  But when you go from a rich source it makes all the difference.

I'd shrink some of the DVD9 folders I made using DVD Shrink so I could fit them on an erasable DVD5 to test play on the stand-alone upconverting DVD Player. I was amazed how good some of those looked!! Nothing like having rich colors and quality video at the start. If you have that you can cheat a bit on the encoding and it still looks good. :)

+1 for Code Project.  One of the few places you can actually find working code for drawing on Glass in c++/c#. If you do find it somewhere else chances are pretty good it's using the Code Project code wrapped in a class. :)

Now that I see HC "Normal" profile isn't so bad if you have a good source, I may be using DVD Rebuilder a lot more.  Using Best profile pretty much doubles the processing time.  That's what I was using all along.  For video that doesn't have to be compressed that much maybe Normal is all I need.  DVD5 blanks are a lot cheaper. If I can get by with DVD5 most of the time and save the DVD9 DL for specials that will be a savings.

I've done a few runs with DVD output.  The output looks good.  On my quad the conversion is complete in the run time of the film. Looks like the main tweaking, other than eventually supporting subtitles, will be on the bit rate calculation.  There's still some space to be used.  The DVD5 runs I did the output size was in the range 4.0 to 4.06 GB.  The author is already looking at it. I'm sure he tries to miss on the small side since a little too big and you can't burn to disc.

He uses HC Enc for the dvd conversion.  If you add
SHOW_ENCODER=1 to the options section of the .ini file the HC window will be displayed.

I think I did 3 conversions with dvd5 output and one to dvd9. I didn't see any audio out of sync or other issues or artifacts.  One one I used the .avs filter option to burn in forced subs.  You can use that to burn in subs until subtitle support is added, or you can add soft subs later with a program like DVDSubEdit.

BDRB 0.36.01 The new release with standard DVD output is here. I'll be trying the DVD output option soon. No subs support yet but planned.

See link in first thread.  Also for a list of changes look at the last page of that thread and work back. It's there.

As far as killing the power on docking stations I know people who don't but I don't understand the thrill of pulling a gyroscope out of the dock. I don't see the issue powering down the dock. btw afa the "have to power down" I believe that's cya copy from the dock company's legal dept. I'm sure many people just yank the drive with no problems.

Unlike the drawer that installs in the tower the dock can be used with other things.  Such as my WD HDTV set top box for playing HDTV content.  Way more convenient than unplugging wires to use an external USB drive. The other consideration is the USB 3.0 card is faster than the disc controller native to the machine.  I can just plug 6 Gb/sec internal drives into the dock, format and rock.

On Everything, I monitor local drives.  The drive in the docking station is seen as a local HD whether a folder is shared or not.  The shared folder thing is Windows not wanting to let go of the drive even though I disconnect on the remote machine.

At this point it's not worth the bother. I uninstalled Zentimo and USB Safely Remove.

ReOpen 4.6.5.0 Changed Middle Click so it's only active when the Desktop is the active window.  This way I can use Middle Click for other stuff in Explorer(such as double-click simulation) without conflict.

Just left click on Desktop first to make sure no window is active, then Middle Click Desktop and the PopUp Window should open.

I'm starting to think it may be simpler just to run sync.exe to flush buffers, then kill the power on my docking station.  Sometimes I'm messing around for 5 minutes with this foolishness. I guess the only way to know is try it the exigent way for a period of time and keep doing scan disks until I can tell if there's any adverse reaction.

I updated to latest Everything Search version and it's still reluctant to let go at times.  Seems rather silly to be opening and closing network connections and programs when there's not a copy or other activity other than change monitoring in progress.  It's starting to get old fast.

Where's the skinned UI and fancy animations, Miles? :P
I thought you were gonna' make me a kit so all I need to do is one function call? :)
;)

Last time I played with custom GUI stuff in C++ was years back, optimizing some bitmap->region stuff used for skinnable apps... not a one-function-call solution, though ;P

If it was, there'd probably be 52 params. :)

I started to look at some of the GDI+ stuff. I saw something about it all being done in software.  I lost interest at that point.  Ok for something like RocketDock where the app is likely to sit in one spot but I wouldn't want all my desktop apps bogging the CPU down just to be pretty. :)

Transpose 1.3.0.0 I added Middle Mouse Click as double-click when an Explorer Window in the active window. The source is included to modify it to suit your own preferences.

(This way I can set Windows Explorer click to the default settings. I can use Shift-Click and Control-Click for item selection, while still avoiding having to double-click to open.)

Each person will have a different aptitude.  That's why these "what's the best first programming language" discussions just end up being what each poster likes. You can't predict how someone else will handle a different type of programming language.  Some people can jump right into assembler while others would rather die than use it. It's going to vary with the person.

The languages designed as teaching languages have a bit of an edge in that they usually have something that looks like words for function calls instead of just some mathematical mumbo jumbo.  Other than that it's all a toss up.
5572
Ah, I have it now. I just added middle mouse click as double-click to my Transpose program. Only in effect when an Explorer Window is the active window.  This way I can put the Windows settings back to the defaults. I can select a row with shift-click. Only thing is to open the row I have to hit Enter.. but that's no biggie.  This way saves on my index finger while still allowing multiple selections and control-click select etc..

Pretty good compromise since I always run Transpose to get editor and browser hotkeys.

I think memory fails after doing stuff for a long time.  I can remember Resource Editor dialog stuff in MFC fumbling around trying to figure out how to add a handler to a button.  Finally double-click and bingo! Not the same property editor Delphi had.  Also Delphi had a bunch of Action stuff that i never bothered with.

For a first time programmer I think  For Next  and If Then Else is enough without delegates classes inheritance and frameworks. You've done it so long you can't remember being bewildered.  A first timer actually thinks the command name has something to do with what happens other than the programmer gave it the name to give the user a clue. As I say, most of the correlations are illusory.  First timers don't realize it's all charged not charged one zero electronics that's interpreted to mean something.

I'm using Everything 1.2.1.371

It must be the latest stable because check for updates says it's up to date.
I guess I could try the beta though.

btw where are you getting this beta from? Their download page only lists the version above.

(On forum.. I see it) :)
