Living Room / Re: The mouse is dead: Introducing Gmail Motion [01-04-11]
« Last post by Deozaan on April 04, 2011, 09:07 PM »
Anyone ever notice how nobody ever uses a mouse in movies and TV? Even though most people are so computer illiterate that they mostly only use mice for everything, it seems like most PC interaction in media is people typing a million miles per hour with little to no mouse clicks.

Kind of like how people playing video games in movies/TV shows are just mashing buttons as fast as they can and exaggerating their movements and yelling and shouting, etc. . .

It launched, but there's a bit of a problem. It seems as though people who pre-ordered the 4-pack aren't able to install it right now.

It looks like Steam changed the name/AppID between the pre-order and the launch version (from Hoard to HOARD, or AppID from 63009 to 63000) so my guess is that Steam doesn't recognize that I own HOARD (63000) because I pre-ordered Hoard (63009).

Though, supposedly, if you install the Demo, you are then able to install and play the full version as well. But it shows up separately in your Library from the pre-ordered edition.

Anyone for Scroogle ?
Anyone for Ecosia - (The green search) ?

I use Scroogle as my default search engine, but I don't like how it breaks some of the useful Google search tools.

i.e. "define: [word]" doesn't work. Neither do conversions like "8 cups in fluid ounces" or "9 USD in EUR" when using Scroogle. So sadly, Scroogle isn't really "just Google, but without all the tracking."

Living Room / Re: Video Games and Mythology Campaigns
« Last post by Deozaan on April 02, 2011, 04:51 AM »
Your request is fairly vague. What sort of mythology are you talking about? Only Greek mythology? Almost everything that isn't real or "present" could be considered mythology. It could even be argued, perhaps, that science fiction is modern mythology.

I thought the graphic should have started a few years earlier.  No props at all to Mosaic or lynx. It's not like they'd have to research back to the 1800s or anything.

A few years earlier is practically the 1800s in Internet time. :P

Opera's popularity over all those years is kind of pathetic. :( :-\ But at least it's still around! Unlike Netscape.

Google has a second joke today. Try Googling  (see attachment in previous post) to see it.

Don't see anything funny there. Mostly about the documentary film. What am I missing?

I noticed the font was different for the entire page. Also for "Comic Sans"

Sounds like it's time for some grilled chicken wings! >:(
Fine so long as you don't eat them in front of Cody. ;D
Oh, but wouldn't that be the perfect punishment? Ripping off his wings, then grilling and eating them in front of him?

We could feed them to him and see how much he enjoyed himself.

Living Room / Re: Movies I Love to Listen To: Dialects and Accents
« Last post by Deozaan on April 01, 2011, 05:10 PM »
The funniest accent I ever heard in person was from a friend of a friend. He was raised in Turkey but living in the USA, and he did an impression of The Crocodile Hunter: "Crikey! Ain't she a beauty!"

It was so funny to hear someone with a Turkish accent try to impersonate an Australian accent.

NewEgg is offering a new product: New Eggs.

Of course, it's an April Fools joke, but this part isn't:

Leave funny feedback on the "product" and you could win $500. I'm sure there are some people here on DC who could win the prize.

...and even with horror stories like that, there's still people who are against government regulation of what companies can and cannot do :-\

Yeah! Because you can switch from a company you don't like to one you do. That's not so easy with governments.

I got a bit lazy and haven't tried any new linux distros. PCLinuxOS seems to do what I wanted for my netbook, which is mostly to use up as little resources as possible so I can use it as a Minecraft server.

Thanks for recommending it to me. I think I'm going to stick with it for a while.

I have grandchildren in Canada. Anyone care to recommend a Canadian or USA mail order business for Easter themed treats?

I don't have any advice about a mail order business, but I thought I'd take the time to warn you: Careful when transporting candies across the border! For example, there are hollow chocolate eggs with toys in them that are illegal in USA (choking hazard).

The United States takes its ban on chocolate eggs with toys inside very seriously, a Canadian woman discovered when she was threatened at the border with a $300 fine over a Kinder Surprise, media said Tuesday.

CBC said Lind Bird was stopped at the U.S. border last month and selected for a random search of her vehicle. Authorities found and seized a two-dollar Kinder Surprise as illegal contraband.

"It’s just a chocolate egg,” Ms. Bird told CBC. “And they were making a big deal. They said: ‘If you were caught with this across the border you would get charged a $300 fine.’"

And for anyone interested, Amazon now has an Android Appstore. That is, it's an app you download that lets you download Android apps. Kind of weird, IMO. Also, they seem to have different prices than what's on the official Market. e.g. Angry Birds is free on Android Market but costs $0.99 on Amazon Appstore.

But the main reason I mention it is because they're giving away a free app (that otherwise normally costs money (from them)) every day to promote their new app store. So if you don't mind downloading the Amazon Appstore app on your Android device to get the free apps, then take a look.

Audiobooks - Quick access to LibriVox's entire catalog.
Nice!  I was able to try it out (I assume it's the same thing) via Android Freeware.

Same developer, so yeah I think it's the same app.

Wait, DDG uses Bing search results (according to that article)??

And Bing uses Google Search results...

Let's see if I remember my math correctly: If A => B and B => C then A => C.

uTorrent Remote - Allows you to add/remove/manage your torrents remotely. I don't torrent often enough to really use this, but it's nifty.

If you're still using uTorrent 1.8.x or 2.x you might be better off using the MiniUI - takes up no space on the phone, just access via browser.

Thanks. That looks cool, but I'm using uTorrent 3.0 (Falcon).
