General Software Discussion / Re: SQLNotes...what is it exactly?
« Last post by superboyac on November 30, 2007, 12:11 PM »
Is there a way to transfer the contents of one column of one grid into the column of another grid, even though the columns represent different fields?

Yes there is an easy way:
1- set Item field equation to:  = SongTitle
2- Click update (next to the equation)
3- remove the Item field equation and save it

p.s. remember, columns are simply a display of the field. You want to operate on fields, not columns. As to grids, they are not related to fields. They serve as a window of your data (items and fields values)
Hmm...I am not finding where this "Item field equation" is.  Where exactly do I enter this formula?

I ask, because I want to try making the database the outline way you described above using only the "item" field, but I don't want to reenter all the song titles and stuff.

I like the idea of the checkboxes or the dropdown, I think I'll do that.

OK, I found out what the problem was.  For album and artist fields, i had the "auto-update" box checked, which is bad apparently.  Can you tell me what that is for?

Oh No!  Disaster!  I just opened up the database I made yesterday, and on the bottom of the screen is was saying something about auto-calc fields, and now all of the album/artist fields disappeared!  This is bad.

You know, I just realized that the itemparent way is better.  My only issue is this: does the position in the hierarchy determine whether the item is album/artist/song?  Is that going to be an issue if I try to use the same data in a different grid?  How will I be able to filter out albums, artists, and songs if I don't have those distinct fields and they all go into the same field?

THanks, yeah, I'm ok with my method.  I don't mind the redundancy for two reasons:  Each individual item can stand alone this way, and; it's not like I'm entering the fields manually, they are being inherited automatically.

Here's another question.  For the fields that are inherited automatically (like in your example above) is there a way to make them non-editable?  For example, if an item is a subtopic and inherits some fields, it would be nice to have that field non-editable so no mistakes would happen.  However, I don't want that particular field to always be non-editable because if it is not a subtopic, then it has to be entered manually.  is that possible?

This program is pretty great.  I can already think of a million things to create databases for.  I'm a very meticulous person.

Can I hide that "#" column?  Do I need it?  Does each item have its own ID number that the program keeps track of?  If I start a new grid and want to reference items in another grid, how do link to that item?  I'm sure there has to be a unique ID somewhere for each one.

Also, i couldn't find how to do this, so if there isn't this feature yet, it should probably be added: expand all/collapse all.  There should be a way to expand all the items and collapse them all, to save some tedious clicking sometimes.

I'm loving this program, I've already constructed the basic outline of my database.

Thanks, this program is awesome.  It's like Access except easier to use.

What's the plan for user-defineable keyboard shortcuts?

OK, more questions (is it appropriate to ask all these specific questions here?  If not, let me know.)

I found out about the "set tree column" option, so disregard the question in the previous post.

Now, I'm going to take advantage of the tree outline.  I want the Artist to be the main topic (album and songtitle fields blank).  Then I will make a subtopic which will include the Album (other two fields blank).  Then, I will make one more subtopic for the songtitle field.  Is there a way for suptopics to automatically fill their parent fields?  For example, if I leave the suptopic field for Artist blank, because it's parent has the Artist field already, can it detect that and automatically fill in the artist for the subtopic?  Here's a screenshot:
Screenshot - 11_28_2007 , 3_23_32 PM.png

OR

Instead of organizing the heirarchy manually, I will fill all the fields manually with no subtopics, and then I'll use a pivot table to sort the items according to album, artist, etc.

Thanks.

Here's a screenshot of what I've done so far:
Screenshot - 11_28_2007 , 2_40_41 PM.png

What determines which field the expand/collapse button appears on?  It automatically appeared on the "ALbum" field, but I think I would prefer it on the Artist field.  Also, the column on the left labeled "#" is automatically numbering each entry.  What determines the numbers and how to I edit this field or tweak it?

Oh yeah!  I forgot about that.  How can I get rid of all the saving prompts?  It's a little annoying when it asks me if I want it to save every time I change something in an item.

OK, I understand.  I think I'm going to go with the HTML pane.  Each entry is going to have a lot of text in it, so it will be easier to read in the pane, rather than a field up in the grid.  Don't worry about exporting to excel, I was just thinking out loud.  If anything, once I'm done, I'd like to be able to export it to my website.  I just want to be sure that the HTML pane content is associated to each item like fields are.

Yeah, I saw the basketball template.  it was cool!  But truth be told, I'm kind of over that idea for the time being.  The music database will be much more useful for me.  But it was nice seeing how you set that up with the custom fields and everything.

OK, PPL, I finally got a chance to try out your program.  By the way, thanks for the wiki, it's very helpful.

I'm giving up on the basketball one and trying something more simple and useful for myself, as a beginner.  What I want to do is create my own database for my favorite music/albums.  They will have my personal comments/reviews associated with each entry.  So far, here is the layout of my database, as far as the fields:
--Album
--Artist
--SongTitle
--Notes (I just used the default SQL field for this one)

So, for each item, I will have a review of it associated with it.  However, I have a question.  Should I write my review in the Notes field, or in the HTML pane?  I'm leaning on doing it in the HTML pane to take advantage of the formatting options.  Besides, it's too hard to control paragraphs and multiple lines in a regular field, because if you press Enter, it doesn't start a new line, but assumes you're finishing the editing (like a spreadsheet).  The only thing I'm worried about is what is the property of the HTML pane?  Is it considered a specialized field?  Or is it something else?  If I wanted to export the database to excel or something, would the html content be associated with the item, like the other fields would be?

Anyway, I'm pretty sure writing the reviews in the HTML pane is the way to go, but I wanted to make sure.

Thanks.

mikiem, thanks for the advice.  Honestly, this website is nothing really serious.  We just want to have someplace to call "home" on the web somewhere for our group.  We're not going to be making a lot of money, we might not make any money.  We all have regular, stable jobs and we do this music for the love of it.  This is jazz music, not pop.  We won't really have "fans" as you're probably thinking.  A few people might want to go to the website to see our schedule or to buy our latest album, that's about it.

It's going to be a very simple website, hopefully.  But not stupid simple, there should be some clarity and elegance to it.  Here's a good example of a jazz group website:
http://www.johnpizza...elli.com/go.php?id=1

See?  Nothing fancy.  I just want to have a place for people to go to when they see us play at a coffee shop or restaurant somewhere.

i would like to try css and php.  What's the easiest way to go about it?

I have to say very rarely to never.  I've noticed hints of surliness a couple of times here but that's about it.  yes, it's a unique and pleasant experience here for some reason.  I have to give credit to mouser.  And here's the really interesting thing, it's something that's not even enforced or talked about that much...everyone here is just naturally courteous and pleasant!  Other forums usually have to have a stickied topic enforcing their rules with the threat of a ban or something, but nothing like that here.  Kudos!

That's very generous of you, I might have to take you up on that.  However, before I do, I have to give it an honest effort.  I just haven't tried all that hard yet, I'm too freakin busy.  But I'll get around to it.

Damn, this program sounds good.  If only I could figure out how to use it.  granted, I haven't put in the time.  I should do that one day!

Yeah, he's very responsive and open-minded.  One of the best developers I've seen.

Myself, I don't think this feature is entirely restrictive, and it is useful.  The point is, i can work with it and there are some good points to it.  So it doesn't bother me so much, although it was a little weird in the beginning.
5519
I'm not sure if it's possible to do what you're asking.  As you can see, the way SFFS is programed, it will automatically group into folders whatever begins with the same characters.  Since you prefix all of those folders with "My" then they will all be grouped under a "My" directory.  It's an interesting implementation by the author, but I agree that it would be more intuitive and flexible if the user can just organize the groups based on the normal folder/object way.  Perhaps you should send your suggestion to him as a feature request.  He is very responsive to suggestions from what I can tell.

Did you try the sample? Does it do what you want?

I think it does, I haven't finished playing with it yet.  I'm still trying to understand how all the data works together in the program, I don't have my head around it yet.

Best E-mail Client / copying text from the Bat! problems
« Last post by superboyac on November 08, 2007, 02:10 AM »
What's the deal with the Bat and copying the text from the email messages?  All of the line-breaks get totally screwed up.  I'll copy a paragraph from one message to another (using ctrl-c, ctrl-v) and instead of pasting with the proper word-wrapping, it pastes it with all these crazy linebreaks...usually one long line, and then a line with maybe one word in it, and it ends up lookin glike this:

TAG UR IT!! This is so scary. Send this to 15 people in the next 143 mins.
When
you are done press F6 and your crushes name will appear on the screenin
big
letters. This is scary cuz it works! if you break the chain you will
have
problems with relationships for the next 5 years JUST COPY AND PASTE

I don't get it.  that's my biggest problem with the Bat...the way it handles the formatting of paragraphs and word-wrapping issues.  There always seems to be something weird about it.

I've updated the wikispace to include a detailed step by step tutorial on how to do this:

Don't forget to get the latest SQLNotes build. That sample is now part of the default template. File > New to create a new file based on the template
Thanks, that's really cool.  Your effort is appreciated.

Thanks guys!
I don't know what CMS is, but I'm going to research it.

As for hiring a pro, that is probably the best option.  But tinjaw is right, our budget may not allow it.  As it is, we only have a few hundred dollars for the band right now, and the most important thing is buying some recording equipment so we don't have to spend money in the studios so much (which is VERY expensive).

True, veign, the site won't change that much besides maybe the calendar page.

I'm going to check out your suggestions and see what I come with, thanks a lot.

Hi, my band and I recently talked about making a real website instead of the just the myspace thing.  It would be a good idea to do that since it will be more professional and give our jazz group a more mature look.  So, I'm coming here for some suggestions.

1)  What's a good pay site to reserve some space/bandwidth/address?
I'm pretty convinced that paying for a site is the best idea.  In college and later, I've made a couple of joke sites on free services and everything about it sucks.  It's very true that you get what you pay for.  So, I'm obviously looking for some space to store some music to play on the website, enough bandwidth for the traffic coming through to not be bothered by slow speeds, and a nice address.  Hopefully, it won't cost too much.  I've heard that I can get pretty good service for about $10 a month or less.  But I don't know for sure.

2)Design of the website.
I actually like the Donationcoder design.  What I like about DC is that everything is very clear and easy to navigate.  Mouser, could I maybe copy your design...maybe I'll change the colors to look more jazzy and less software-y.  I don't think we are going to be popular enough to need a forum, but I'm thinking about it anyway if it's not too much maintenance.  If that's the case, I would like to copy DC's forum engine because it is hands-down the best I've seen anywhere.

AS you can tell, I don't have any experience with web design.  The few webpages I've made, I've done with Dreamweaver with a little Photoshop and very minimal code tweaking.  I'm very good with computers and I'm pretty good with learning code if I have to.  But I only want to learn as much as I need to get by because I have to spend my time with other things, preferably.

Do the real web designers use Dreamweaver or similar programs?  Or do you just use text editors?  Or both?

Thanks everyone.
