I also had not heard of that hardware platform.  Has anyone heard anything (good or bad) about it?

General Software Discussion / cloud|fleet - be the captain of your data
« Last post by wraith808 on September 12, 2013, 02:51 PM »
cloud|fleet is an integrated option to purchase a configured box with self-hosted services installed, plug it into your router, and unplug from dependency on the cloud at large.

From the site:
3 steps to heaven

  • Select your domain
  • Order cloud fleet box
  • Plug into router

Now you can send mails, take notes, store files from all your devices without relying on 3rd party services like Google, Evernote or Dropbox.

Looks like an interesting idea.

^ They also have a 14 day return policy on software purchased in storefronts.

Side point: if the OP'er didn't want to contend with populating the FP links...couldn't the mods be allowed to take care of it?

While I understand the sentiment, that's a slippery slope that shouldn't be broached IMO.

I've updated the sources (including Google Docs) after radio silence for a while.  The deadline has been pushed to the 31st of Oct, but I'm still trying to get it done ASAP.  I'm having trouble on the resolution- I've posted what I have for that last chapter, but I'm not convinced it's the right direction.  It could be phantom limb pain as in my aggressive edits I removed a whole combat and action sequence, but looking at the goal of the wrap up and what I'm trying to accomplish, as cool as the setup on that last mission was, it wasn't really necessary.  But now I'm struggling with how to convey the situation without telling it.

In the "I can't believe that EA is doing something consumer-centric department", Origin is "Introducing The Origin Great Game Guarantee"

We know that feeling: the one where you sit down, wait for a new game to finish downloading and installing, start it for the first time, and want it to rock. The intro sucks you in, you press a button to shoot, jump, or talk for the first time, and then it's suddenly three a.m. We know that feeling, and the one afterwards of knowing that not only does a game rock, but that it was worth every dollar you spent on it.

We hope every game you play on Origin will meet this high bar, and we're happy to say that starting today, we can guarantee that we'll make things right if you decide the game you just bought didn’t live up to your expectations.

The new Origin Great Game Guarantee works like this: You may return EA full game downloads (PC or Mac) purchased on Origin for a full refund--within 24 hours after you first launch the game, within seven days from when you purchased it, or within the first seven days after the game's release date if you pre-ordered it (whichever of these conditions happens first).

If something doesn't work out—you aren’t riveted by the storyline, or sucked in by the action, or even just if the game doesn't play well with your video card—we’ve got your back.

Requesting a refund is quick and easy. Just visit your order history and click the “request a refund” link next to your recent purchase, answer a few quick questions, and we’ll take it from there.

For more details, you can check out the full Origin Great Game Guarantee policy details posted on Origin.com. The Origin Great Game Guarantee is effective as of today in 20 countries. Like the improved Origin Store, we are rolling out the program worldwide over the next few weeks, and everyone will be covered by the Origin Great Game Guarantee by the end of September.

I don't think my idea needs to have anything but a positive impact on discussions -- i see it as enhancing the discussion because the best links and new discoveries mentioned in the free-ranging discussion can get added to the first post so that they aren't overlooked, and new people coming into the discussion can educate themselves by reading some of the external links so that they can join in the discussion in an intelligent way.  It would open up discussions to more people, something i think we desperately need.

What do you think that adding it to the top does that reading through the thread (if you're interested) doesn't?  I only see it of use if you want a TL;DR version and don't want to really join the discussion.  In any other cases, you get the whole disjointed conversation bit IMO.  rgdot sums it up (as does 40's discussion of tools for the job).

You're right, of course. I didn't mean it was exactly that. I just figured if they can enable access to your library on multiple accounts, then maybe they can now allow you to be logged in to the same account on multiple computers.

I think that's been *possible* for a while.  But is it *likely*?

I think that your response to 40 sort of gels what I don't like about the idea.

Have you ever seen threads on forums where someone hasn't read through the whole thread before they reply?  As threads on forums are dynamic discussions, even a summary doesn't convey the meat of the conversation, and the tone of what has gone before.  So the replies aren't as much of an addition to the discussion.  They're disconnected, and can feel like the real life conversations when you're talking to someone and someone comes and interjects only having heard the last bit of the conversation.

There needs to be a clear direction as to whether a thread is a discussion, or just a series of disconnected comments about a news article.  You see the latter in many places on the internet- which is why I tend not to engage there.  You don't get to know the people and the tone of the area, and conversations tend to fragment as the discussion isn't the point- the original link is.  And even trying to add context to the discussion isn't really adequate.

To contribute to a discussion, especially coming in on the tail end, you have to be willing to invest the time IMO.  And this gives the illusion that you have gone through the thread, when really you haven't.

It sounds to me like this Family Sharing will basically enable that feature. After all, if your library is shared and visible on another machine while you're logged in elsewhere, why couldn't you install the software without having to switch to/from offline mode? But I'm not really sure.

It doesn't seem exactly like that to me.  This seems to facilitate sharing between multiple accounts, i.e. multiple users.  If I want to have my games available and playable on my laptop and on my desktop (and my backup desktop), I shouldn't have to have three accounts.  The one account should be enough.  And that's not what this is AFAIC.

Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: Review of Zeus Edit
« Last post by wraith808 on September 11, 2013, 03:58 PM »
Based on what's been completed of this review I decided to try out the program and compare it against my current editor of choice - Komodo Edit - because the overall philosophy behind them seems similar. Since I mostly deal with HTML I could never justify purchasing Komodo IDE for close to $400.

So far I have to say my first impression seems pretty accurate. There's a lot for me to learn to translate what I do in Komodo Edit to Zeus but I'm already very impressed with the amount of work put into making it work with so many freely available tools and proactively providing solutions (via the support forum) for numerous scenarios.

I think your experience with the price is very similar to mine.  I know that people say that software is only worth what will be paid for it, but it's more than that.  It seems that the whole philosophy with Zeus Edit is to give you an IDE that you can justify the price of easily.  My employer pays for the basics in an IDE... which for C# is Visual Studio.  But as a programmer, I prefer something lean- which is what the alternate IDEs are.  But I don't have the deep pockets of my employer, so justifying a $400 price tag is hard.

I had a deadline come up at work, but I plan to jump back into this. But I will say, having to get stuff done rather than just evaluating and putting Zeus to the test, I'm very impressed with how seamlessly it has fit into and become a vital part of my workflow.

Yes but what I'm asking for is for the first post in the thread to be kept updated with new information (and collected links from followup posts); that way the first post in a thread is a sort of constantly updated table of summary and list of reading material to inform the pages of discussion posts that follow.

Doesn't that put a bit more responsibility in the hand of the OP- that might not be keeping up with the thread?   Others might be bantering back and forth, but only the OP can update the OP...

And having anyone else edit a post is a very slippery slope...

What I'd really like is multi-computer single-user licenses, i.e. I don't have to go into offline mode on my other computer in order to have steam up and running.  I had a stupid situation the other day- I was transferring my computer to my son, so I was uninstalling software I'd installed into my user account to give him more space.  A lot of that software was through steam, and even though I was only uninstalling, I had to go online and update Steam and be connected to the account just to uninstall.

That seems really stupid.

Oh well... I'm back to looking for a reader.  The Old Reader bites the dust.

The Old Reader is still going strong.

I have found that other than WebComics, since this whole Google Reader fiasco followed by The Old Reader being down, my consumption of online content has gone way down.  Even though the Old Reader has been stable since the scare, I haven't visited much... just to catch up on my web comics.

As for the actual service/product - looks interesting. It seems that there are more like this popping up. But "email"? Man... I'm so sick of email. It's just so broken. I really think we need to scrap it and just start over with something new. A simple communications platform for letters, short messages, attachments, audio, video, audio/video/rich media messages, etc. People keep dumping resources into a broken platform.

The thing about it is that I think that most people would agree that e-mail is broken.  There currently isn't a viable solution to the problem itself, so in the meantime, do you ignore that there is a problem until something else comes along?  Or do you work within the constraints of what exists in order to hopefully make it a little bit better until the time that the next innovation happens?

Any recommendation for hardware?
- I mean with reviews, etc.

Tom's Hardware. ;)

Not as good as it used to be... but still a sight better than the rest.
