Living Room / Re: Hats off to USPS for innovative tracking scheme...
« Last post by Deozaan on April 11, 2011, 01:05 AM »
Well, I'm going to go against the conventional wisdom here...  I'm actually a fan of USPS, and will opt for it over UPS or FedEx ground if I'm given the choice - I find it's faster and generally much cheaper. And they deliver on Saturday (though I expect that might be something that goes away sometime in the next few years as a cost cutting measure).

There are a number of things I like about USPS. I was just chiming in on this thread's topic which is specifically about USPS's tracking system.

The other thing you have to remember about the USPS is that it is subsidized with your tax dollars and they don't have to compete to stay in business. Heck, they don't even have to be profitable. That's why the prices can be lower but some of the services (such as tracking) aren't as good as businesses who are in the business to make money and need to make money to stay in business.

Yep. USPS tracking is pretty much a joke.

I've got an item that shipped on April 5th and it says the estimated delivery date is April 25th. What the smurf? 20 days?

General Software Discussion / Re: How Apple “Lost” the PC Wars
« Last post by Deozaan on April 10, 2011, 04:43 AM »
What I got from that article was that Apple didn't lose because it didn't compete. Apple's "competitors" killed themselves off and then Apple did nothing to gain market share. So Apple didn't lose the war because of anything Apple did. They lost because they twiddled their thumbs while everyone else did stuff.

Then the author goes into crazy territory calling Apple the most respected company in so many categories. Huh? I'd like to see the statistics and source(s) behind those claims.

Well before the time I got to the end of the article, I couldn't follow the "logic" any more.

That's insane!  I didn't look at the video.  I just couldn't...  :'(

You mean the video of the mice and the albatross? It wasn't disturbing at all. It just showed about 4 mice (at a time) crowding around a specific area of the bird, with the bird mostly ignoring them. I was expecting something truly repulsive like the mice crawling in and out of the bird's innards. But the video was really tame. The bird could have been sitting on an egg-shaped cheeseball for all you could tell in the video.

MorroW vs Losira - ZvP on Tal Darim Altar: Best-of-1. Epic game between pro-gamers that play in Korea. Starts out hilarious and promises to be a boring game, but it ends up as a total hoot due to the skill of the players involved. Must-watch.
MorroW vs mini - ZvT on Typhon Peaks: Best-of-1. Great game full of funny moments. The outcome becomes apparent about halfway through, but this one you watch for the execution alone.

Those were really fun. Thanks!

Whenever I play with my BuckyBalls and make something interesting, I'm so impressed that I have to show somebody. Usually that somebody is my wife. But whenever I show my wife my latest magnet shenanigans she gives me a look and asks "How old are you?"

:'( :(

I'm having a strange issue. When I click Help -> Check for Updates, I get the following:

Trout Updates.png

If it's not obvious, the problem is that it doesn't even check for updates for Trout. It only checks for updates for DcUpdater. (Current version is Trout 1.0.5 build 85)

I don't know if this is a problem with Trout or with DcUpdater or DCUHelper or what.

Screenshot Captor / Re: New pixelate effect for Screenshot Captor
« Last post by Deozaan on April 07, 2011, 05:35 PM »
Why doesn't user go to options and disable grid if they don't like it?

Because that requires initiative, problem solving skills, and basic logic! You can't expect users to have all of those!

I found Cody in an old Game that Notch, the creator of Minecraft made years ago. Do you think that Nudone will be sued for stealing the likeness?

CodyGame Pixelated.png

True facts
It's quite obvious from the context of this post that I did NOT use Screenshot Captor's pixelate SpecialFX to paste Cody into this image and then pixelate him with the gridlines disabled. What would make you even think that?

I don't like the grid lines. Why doesn't it just pixelate the selection without adding stupid, ugly grid lines?

General Software Discussion / Re: SpiderOak - very nice people =)
« Last post by Deozaan on April 07, 2011, 05:17 PM »
The thing I don't like about SpiderOak (the software) is that if you try to restore from a backup (after a format, for example), it will copy everything back to the original directory locations and doesn't give you an option to download the content to a different location. This isn't good if you moved file locations since your last install (e.g. Games are now on E:\Games\ instead of D:\Games).

Then you have to manually delete the old backup locations and manually add the new backup locations instead of just being able to choose an option like "restore these files to this new location and use the new location for future backups."

Living Room / Re: Amazon Clouddrive Sync Clients
« Last post by Deozaan on April 07, 2011, 02:56 PM »
Today's Bits Du Jour has CloudZap for 50% off ($30). It says it works with Amazon S3, so maybe that includes Cloud Drive?

Rackspace Pricing looks affordable to me.

It seems affordable to me, too. But Amazon's Cloud Drive is about half the cost per GiB. Of course, you have to pay for specific increments of data with Cloud Drive, so if you're only going to be using 10 GiB of storage, you're still paying for 20 GiB, which is where Rackspace or S3 would win out.

mouser really loved Parry Gripp's Cat Flushing a Toilet song/video, so I thought I'd share a couple more by him.

Young Girl Talking About Herself: I actually really like the music to this one. But of course the lyrics are just silly.

iPad: Watch for the plot twist partway through the song!

You mean like why it's better to use a constant that has a 16 character long name all over your code instead of just placing its value of 1 everywhere?

:P

(This is an inside joke/tease, since mouser, JoTo and I had this discussion in IRC last night.)

I am sorry and feel stupid, but I don't know where to click to get the free pro version. The page leads me to a list of the different versions available and "pro" costs $25. What should I use? pay later, and enter the license number you mentioned? thanks a lot for your answer.
-theprinceofsorts (April 05, 2011, 06:42 PM)

Try just downloading the Pro version on the download page and then enter the license key when you install it.

However, I would love to find some kind of hoop to make people jump through to get the games.  :)

Filling out the DC Giveaway form seems like jumping through a hoop to me. :P

If anyone is still waiting for it, it looks like the issues with installing it are (mostly) resolved. I'm currently installing the game.

Be aware that it appears as though the game and the demo are linked. That is, installing the game will install the demo, and deleting the demo will delete the game. But other than that you should be able to buy/download/play it now.
