General Software Discussion / Re: Cnet's Download.com and the installer scam

As you know our PR is 8 and the alexa rank is about 300. and your software are public on our site is free. So it is a big help for your company.

Luring kids with chocolate eh ?

PR8 means "jacks****" and alexa means null void if you're stealing traffic from developers to leech for your own search engine benefit and to feed surfers with these installers.

Here's to Google continuing to innovate and challenge the status quo rather than being the status quo themselves. (I know not everyone is probably going to be a fan of this.

They challenge the status quo ? i thought they want the traffic routed through their servers and that is why they come up with almost every web service possible. They just create competitive service to kill the business who bring the concept in the market.

Google dynamic view was created to beat tumblr as tumblr's popularity is growing charts these days. By the way what facebook has to do with blogging ?

I'd rather they hosted their files with more respectable services... (Rapidshare or Hotfile.)

At least developers will make money per download from such sites. As of now these leech sites are returning - 0 traffic and 0 % money in return.

Living Room / Re: Is Kindle Fire set to be the Apple/MS slayer tablet?

Apple is more restrictive with the usage of their tablet -ipad. Kill flash, kill multitasking, kil more non-apple holes. Amazon has no such restrictive plan and all they want is customer to their stores. They have nothing to lose if anyone jailbreaks their android tablet for whatever reason as long as they shop at amazon. I dont see much usage of such small device, if people are using it for cloud and browsing then i don't think there is much innovation left other than graphics and faster computing.

I'm going to hold off on tablet temptation unless someone like waccom from design industry comes up with affordable tablet. But considering price (99$) and (199$) it looks good to buy this christmas for those who are dying for tablet. Why buy 350-500$ Samsung Galaxy for your small needs when you can get tablet at 199$ or 99$ ?

My few cents on this topic.

Desktop and Laptop Market is for -

1) Education, research and development
2) Audio, Video and other media development
3) Commercial and non-commercial software development
4) Web
5) Offline data management
6) Faster computing
7) Office and other routine tasks
8. online shopping
9) Books and other publishing media
10) Gaming - web dependent and non-web dependent
and many more...

You can see that desktop and laptop market perform - creation, consume and sharing of the data. It's not stuck on any one particular task. This platform makes use of powerful processor be it core or graphics. Laptops are yet to catch up with the processing speed of bigger machines and in some cases not even desktop cores but still they're offering almost everything that desktop can offer.

Tablet market is for -

1) Browsing the internet, emails, watching videos
2) Online shopping
3) Book (read)
4) Phone ?
5) Art (draw/photography)
etc.

As you can see tablet market is for those who consume and limited data creation possibility. So basically tablet users have more limitations on data manipulation. Sure they can use external keyboard and mouse to some extent. But tablet processors are not yet matured enough to disturb any of the desktop or laptop platform. You can watch youtube video or do skype on tablet but you can't do encoding of the video on your tablet. Arm processors are not fast enough to manage that. Similarly you can't use tablets for development activity with these processors as of now. One more point is about broken code and fixing thee same on tablets. You can't fix many issues of your browser or OS on your tablet if you have no external keyboard and mouse or access to another machine. Tablets are also limited with storage for now. AFAIK, there is no tablet with 1TB storage, you have to depend on external drive.

One important point most of the tablet users are forgetting before making comments like -"deskptop is dead already and you're living in cave with dekstops", that screen size is very important. Today we have screens which have ports to get input from deskop. But considering the amount of processing it needs for data manipulation tablets are not ready for handling big screens (they're not mac mini yet). I don't know if tablets can give you feel for HD and 3D movies like big screens.

As for cloud apps - If you want someone else to take care of your family pictures, videos and purchased mp3s then you have nothing to do on desktop/laptop. You should migrate to tablets to save money. But if you've privacy and data loss/tampering concerns then cloud has nothing to offer you.

Yeah, 2++ cents.  :D

Don't get me wrong but those who propose monthly and weekly updates for ubuntu, facebook and firefox needs to get a gurrlfriend, kitteh and puppy and a good hobby or maybe pr0n or anything that keeps them away from writing broken code and tempts them to release new version without adding new features.  >:(

Plugin_container.exe consumes a lot of memory. Flash, Silverlight, Java and any other plugin requires plugin_container.exe and even if these plugins are not invoked on webpage, it continues to consume memory. This problem exists for chrome as well but in comparison to FF it takes less resource.

I didn't get much good response from the people at duck.co, they think such type of practice is fair and reporting such site is "false positive" in their book. So i don't know how google and other search engines will respond. It's a feeling like getting crushed by big corps and yes they'll get away with this.

Android has an app for DNS(dragon naturally speaking) so it is taking off already. There is also an app for google search with voice on android. So slowly but surely it is taking up. My point is that - few years back in my early twenties i used to do some searches via typing keyword, i can comfortably do the same in future ( for ahm) at home for obvious reasons not using speech recognition. But the point is, i can't imagine future generation holding the same conservative thoughts like me. Unless i do some fundamental brainwashing, there is no way they're going to pick those conservative thoughts and feel awkward for the same. (Hmm, current teen generation liking lady gaga and Justin bieber says it all about our doomsday). They may do weird actions while using the paper displays or holograms in future or shout some swear words to program their tablets and mobiles to execute some of their tasks.
Hmmm... You got me thinking... Would it be better if your computer could read lips? No noise. 've actually got 4 mics on my desk here at home... So, SR/STT would really make my life somewhat easier for some things. But with 2 webcams as well, reading lips would be, well, nah. Just easier for me to speak. But I can see a use for it. Like of like "hands free gestures".
I think "leap reading" and "eye ball tracking" is definitely a one good research area as it'll help disabled people to use technology for communication and getting things done. In fact we can make them more independent on simple tasks like ATM withdrawals etc. So these two areas are def worth to look at. As for "speech", blind people are using it for now to effectively use computers. So this technology is definitely has it's pros that surpasses minor cons.

Now what's in it for developers ? I mean we're talking about how upcoming technology on this platform is going to help non-developers. But as developer i think i would like to see if some of our tasks are minimized in VS or any other MS dependent technology.

Yeah. Speech recognition is one hell of privacy breaker. Difference between "typing pron keyword" and shouting "pron", says it all.  ;D

If i'm not wrong then with QT, Mono and Ironpython any linux based program can run between multiple window managers or distros. So it doesn't matter what type of distro people are running. Centralization of distros will put linux in same queue as that of apple and windows. There will be more people unsatisfied with the choices made by council before final OS release, take example of ubuntu unity window manger move or monthly release move. So my view is that it doesn't matter which distro user is running on desktop. They need apps to get their work done. Non-developers are concerned about getting work done and developers are interested in platform stability and ease of development. Linux has ability to balance this need without losing any popularity factor.

AFAIK, most of the tablets around me are linux based so i can't say that there is not much of support for touch interface. I do agree there should be more hardware support ( drivers and apps). I have no idea about battery life so i can't comment on that.

Not sure where you've been for the last 10 years, but for most people the desktop is not their primary computer.
You mean those who have no work on computer other than checking mails, listening to music and spending time on social network ?

This huge shift is happening for them last 2 years and not last 10 years. That's exaggeration at it's best.

As for desktop computing, it's not just about spreadsheets. Educational and research usage of computer will always remain on desktop. Same goes for developers and many other domains in computing. It's funny to imagine developer typing 1k lines of code on tablet and then compiling on ARM Processor for next 5-6 hours(heard of mainframe programs?). Same goes for music, animation and other development areas where desktops for speed and dev. tools are irreplaceable.

I'll switch to linux completely when MS and Apple move to Cloud. :P Seriously, linux needs some apps for the folks who are stuck with apple and windows like photoshop, autocad, matlab etc. Alternatives wont' change a thing for them because they don't want to use any app other than industry hyped apps.

I don't know why people are thinking as if MS wants to shoot on their own feet.

1. This is developer preview, not consumer release RC. It is meant for developers to use Metro UI without any simulator in VS for developing apps for tablets.
2. Developer Preview focused only on Metro UI, base code is still Win 7 and nothing added to it. So this will give them idea about backwards compatibility and driver support. Again, this has nothing to do with consumers liking this preview.
3. Tiles are hard to navigate in case of laptops, desktops and netbooks. Any 5 year old can see the difference and that is why they're not making Metro Tablet UI default for desktop consumer release. I guess this news was released one month ago in ars.technica. Still people assume that metro is forced on them. Do remember that windows classic interface (98ish) is still possible in win 7. Why do you think they'll dump their user friendliness and lose the market ?
4. Cloud login and apps is something to worry about and i'm with most of the people here. I don't want to go - cloud for plenty of reasons like - slow connection, data loss, security, data ownership, data mining etc etc.
5. Win 7 apps store is for mobile/tablet user.
echo("Win 7 apps store is for mobile/tablet user")
So lets not worry about apps restriction for desktop users. Do remember the fact that large percentage of windows desktops have applications which are meant for offline usage and this will go on unless people shift their mindset in trusting cloud technology.

It's too early to make any comment on Win 8 unless they release RC 3 or RC 4 aka Final Build as per tradition. Win 7 picked up popularity after RC3 AFAIK. I'm waiting for these instead of tablet preview, media center preview or dev preview.

I answered it already, stop trying.  :D

For desktop apps? No. For win 7 phones they already have strictly monitored store for users.Check ars.technica for answers to your questions.
573
No,metro is not forced UI for final release. It just comes up with dev preview because they want beta apps. Wait for RC Build to see if some of these forced changes remain for desktop users.

If they go for cloud route then i have no other choice than using win 7 for few years or switching to linux. I hate cloud based OS and storage.
