I've searched for two separate domain names using network solutions and instantdomainsearch... let's wait and see.

I can't recall which registrar I used, I'd have surely named them in the OP if I did.

General Software Discussion / Checking for available domain name = giving it away?
« Last post by nosh on January 22, 2011, 07:15 PM »
I thought of a domain name I liked: digistrom.com, a couple of years back. I checked for availability using a domain name checking site though I wasn't serious about getting it then. The name was available. I had thought up the name myself and a Google search showed negligible hits for 'digistrom'... someone posting in a forum using the nick. I expected the name to be available when I was serious about getting a website. A few months down the line I checked again and... you guessed it: this time it was taken. The home page leads me to believe it's been taken up by squatters. There seems to be no legit presence behind the site even now.

I Googled a little and a comment on this page confirms my suspicions.
# Steve Jones Says:

The problem is even worse than stated…..domain name checking sites and searches are now being monitored by squatters. I searched and found two available domain names for my site, and within 15 minutes of finding each one, they magically became “taken”. This is BS and needs to be stopped!!!

Do we even need a web service to tell us if a name is available? Seems to me the best way to go about it is just try opening the name you like in your browser and if you hit a "server not found" the name's probably available.

I just wanted to put this up as a cautionary tale for anyone who might be thinking of getting a domain name in the future. I've learned my lesson the hard way and the name I like is probably worth a few hundred $, if not more. The ridiculous amounts some people are willing to pay squatters seems to make it worth their while to usurp thousands of domains. Even if a handful of domains are actually bought back the squatter comes out a winner.

Activation/License/Language Help / Re: A piece of Sh**

I've been there. I've even had a couple of tech support guys hang up on me. ;) But my frustration was totally justified!

There's an upside though -- A large number of people that do get like this will swing back the other way and become extremely happy and tell other people *IF* you treat them nicely, understand their frustrations, and help them solve the problem.

True. Positivity can be contagious.

On a lighter note: Extremely patient tech support (NSFW):

I just want to say that I've always admired mouser for the way in which he responds to these situations.   Most of us would instinctively snap back at what could be construed as rude/obnoxious behavior.

The only possible reason I could think of for running a 3rd party inbound/outbound firewall is if you were interested in seeing what your apps were quietly getting up to internet-wise. Most will be checking for and fetching updates. But some programs will also try to do quite a bit more 'behind your back' than you'd expect.

If you're suspicious or concerned about any of that, you'll need something that monitors and reports on both directions.

+1 on monitoring (standard, API based) outbound connections using a 3rd party firewall. I have been alerted on more than one occasion by (the rather dated, but still serves its purpose) SPF about malicious activity. Another long abandoned utility that serves a similar purpose is Mike Lin's Startup Monitor.

I use a Razer Diamondback, it's nice but definitely overpriced, in retrospect.

Getting one with a side button and mapping it to close the current app makes things very convenient.

AFA ergonomic keyboards go, the MS Ergonomic 4000 is really nice.

Definitely avoid the MS ergonomic mouse, though (unless you've spent a good part of your life in a potato field and miss the experience.  :P)

Living Room / WikiRebels: an unbiased (IMO) and informative doco on Wikileaks

I'm not posting this in the Wikileaks petition thread because I think it's a must-see and don't want it going unnoticed in an older thread.

It's an indepth (nearly an hour long) look at the organization and puts the whole WL phenomenon into perspective.

I fully understand restrictions on system files. But their restrictions on data files are a pain, to put it mildly.

If I want to transfer a pdf file to the ipad I have to rely on whatever method the 3rd party app I'm using has devised to accomplish this. I have tried several apps - they all seem to have devised their own methods for transferring files and most of them feel like backdoors/hacks that Apple has grudgingly allowed. I don't see how this makes for a good UI.

What's more, if I've imported a file to the device using app-A and now need to work on it with app-B, I need to import it all over again. Once again, not so much a good UI as a big f*** you to the users to safeguard Apple's intere$ts.

selloutboyac, I'm glad you got an iPad.  :P  ;D

I had a tamed version of iTunes running on my PC before I got the iPad, but I had to bite the bullet and update the blasted thing. And I haven't bothered disabling any services either. It's not as badly behaved as I expected it to be and you can keep it from taking over your media using inbuilt settings so I'm not complaining (too loudly). Could they make the program less confusing and scary?... hell yes!

Maybe changing VM software will help your cause? I have a jailbroken device and am holding out updating till there's an untethered JB available.

Living Room / Re: Kindle and iPad Books Take Longer to Read than Print [STUDY]
« Last post by nosh on October 30, 2010, 01:15 AM »
One (often overlooked) advantage ebook readers have over the ipad is the comfort factor. The ipad is heavy, and its edges are not exactly rounded, they dig into you if you're reading lying down with the ipad resting on you. The situation is salvaged somewhat with a good case but I'm sure something like a Kindle is way more comfortable.

I have never had eye-strain reading on portable devices. And I've read complete novels on a Nokia 6600, with a screen size a shade over 2". With larger font sizes and adjustable brightness eye-strain is even less of an issue on a bigger device.

The features available on devices must play some part in reducing reading speed. The ability to tap on a word and get its meaning is one of the biggest advantages a device has over a dead tree. But it does tend to slow down someone like me with a vocabulary of under 37 words. :P

B&N's Nook Color is worth checking out.

Just make sure you don't hit either hotkey combination coz those still work, unless it's been remedied in the newer versions. I make AHK intercept these with a "disabled for your safety" msgbox.
And the .ini needs to be edited everytime you upgrade kmp.

Don't they use file managers in Korea?  :P
