General Software Discussion / Re: Synchronizing a few folders between two machines?
« Last post by Armando on September 07, 2010, 03:47 PM »
Thanks sajman99.

I actually downloaded and tried Bvckup and I really liked it ! I find that for real time sync it works even better than other products like Super Flexible File Sync. It's fast, doesn't take much resource, etc.

The only problem is the VSS option to copy in use files. But the author told me that it would be implemented in the next beta. As soon as this will be available, I'll try it again.

It's a nice and well designed app. Not many features (it's not the goal here), but simple and efficient.

General Software Discussion / Re: Best free firewall for Windows?
« Last post by Armando on September 02, 2010, 10:55 PM »
I am almost thrilled by the timing... Just today I got fed up with OA++ and went back to Outpost Security Suite. And now everything is going faster!

So I'm not the only one. I wonder what they did because, really, it worked perfectly for at least 2 years. This really annoys me.

i've been generally happy with comodo's offering provided all you use it for is the firewall.

the rest of the "internet security" features comodo bundles in cause more headaches than they're worth imho.

however, if you're sitting behind a hardware home router with basic security features there's also good argument that the built-in firewall that comes with Windows is more than adequate.

I'm only interested in the firewall. I still have my license for NOD32 but it's finishing soon and so I'm already experimenting with Microsoft Security Essentials. Really, I like what I see. And the idea that I won't spend a single $ for security is pretty interesting -- especially considering my last experiences.

I use a laptop and so I can't rely only on my router's firewall. Plus, even if many here believe HIPS is stupid useless garbage, I actually find it useful. Just about a month ago, I was sleepy and downloaded some version of clipmagic... I think... Well not sure actually, but I think it was clipmagic or some other free clipboard extendered to try.  Yes, the website seemed funny... But I was sleepy.

Anyway : I installed what I downloaded and the installer started to install a few malware, and these malware instantly started phoning home... And Online Armor instantly blocked  all of these apps. I know they were all blocked as I compared OA's reports with the new *.exe and other files that were installed in the last few minutes.

So here you go. HIPS can be useful (for me at least, maybe not for the other superhumans here) when, once in a while I act stupidly. I'm generally careful, but when I lack sleep, I sometimes do stupid things...  :)

I tried to find a thread where to post my latest results with Online Armor. Seems like this one is a good one even if a tad old (!!). Online Armor was mentioned a few times here.

I've been using Online Armor for more than 2 years and it's been working fine. However since I renewed my license a few months (4-5) ago and upgraded to the latest version, I started having problems. But these were intermitent : sometimes when coming back from standby, 1- Everything was slow and most apps were inaccessible, 2- windows was giving me some privilege warning (i.e. : Couldn't access that file because I didn't have the rights, etc.), 3- I could not access the task manager. There was no way out of that an I always had to do a cold reboot. That happened almost once a week.

I didn't thought it was OA as I never had problems before. But 2 weeks ago I decided to try removing OA and replace it with something else -- I installed the new Comodo.

Well, guess what... 2 weeks without a single problem. So I guess I spent money for nothing + i lost incredible amounts of time.

I don't event feel like trying to get OA to work again as I already spent so much time diagnosing my machine... And Comodo is free.

This kind of situation happened so often to me in the past (not just with firewalls...) that I sometimes wonder why I bother spending money on those things.

Maybe somebody else experienced similar problems with the newish OA versions ?

thanks for your comments/suggestions everybody. I'm busy tonight so won't have time to try other stuff with SFFS or register to the... Forum... Yes, Jim, there's a forum. :) Tom mentioned it in an earlier post. What's weird though is that I couldn't find any mentions of it on the main web site (note that I only looked for 5 min... But this is often the max amount of time I spend on a web page trying to find something before I start getting impatient). Seems like super flexible is distributed by different companies and so this forum is provided by one of its distributors/reseller.

I'm currently trying SFFS as I find syncback a bit slow...

Although, after 2 days of testing, I really find that the syncback interface is much much better : offers more flexibility, options etc (the grid showing all backups offers a much clearer view of what needs to be backed up, when, etc. and all backup jobs can be sorted through their different fields, etc.). Only problem : no delta backup... Which is stupid, considering the demand. So, basically, 3 the main features I'm interrested in in SFFS are the "partial file updating", the versioning and the "real time" backup.

A backup software needs to be rock solid -- backup problems completely defeats the security purpose of the software. Unfortunately, in my tests, I  experienced something very strange (I'll post this in the SFFS forum  later but I wanted to try here first, in the community I know best !). But it could be me. I really wonder what I'm doing wrong.

1- In the "exact mirror mode" when "partial file updating" option is ON, larger "in use" files like my Outlook PSTs or IQ DataBase are 1- copied and then... immediatly after... 2- deleted ! This seems to happen once every 2 backup.

2- This doesn't seem happen when the "partial file updating" option is off. Also note that use VSS (for all files)

3- I also had issues with The "Run profile as soon as drives or volumes involved become available" option... The time always resets to 0.

It could be some installation or registry problems... I tried to figure out what the problem is and can't see what's missing.  I might just go back to my "a tad slow but reliable" SyncBAck but... still...
Anybody knows what's going on ?

Thanks

eheh... Yes, I know what you mean. The thing is, I don't think more time and money will be invested on the website/server side at this stage of development -- probably more around the release of V1.

--> Usually it works though... There are periods of the day where it's damn slow though... I agree. The download area is always responsive though.
558
In terms of keeping tabs into a tree, TreeStyleTabs is better than TabKit alone but the 2 can be combined IIRC.
559
Hi Jim! :)
Thanks for your note.
Yes, please tell us what you think/found.
I won't have the time to test anything before September the 5th/6th... Am postponing the download until then...

Newish article about the " Best desktop search tools " and a Summary ...

Every now and then, I have this urge to retry X1 and... I resist. Maybe is it the time to do so and see if some of the gripes I had were finally fixed.

Still.... 50$... and I already own Archivarius which does 3/4 the job (minus Outlook indexing [Edit : well... It does it but it's not convenient at all -- slow as hell etc.] and other niceties that X1 does so well [like column filtering, save searches. etc.])

TabKit & BarTab seem great. Thanks for the tip.

I have found Drive Snapshot to be one of the secret software gems on the web. It has a GUI as well as command line - DOS and Windows use - and the entire program is under 300k! Just have a look at this page (begin reading at section "Mount a disk Image as virtual drive") to find out some of its more hidden capabilities.

Second thing I learn from you today ! Thanks for that one -- definitely looks nice. Will check it out.

I put all Acronis services on manual and use the following batch file to start Acronis (I do not use the scheduler ever) - the processes get killed automatically when I close Acronis using this process killer utility:

::Batch file to start Acronis while services set to manual are not run at startup to save RAM
start "schedhelp.exe" "%CommonProgramFiles%\Acronis\Schedule2\schedhlp.exe"
start "TimounterMonitor" "%ProgramFiles%\Acronis\TrueImageHome\TimounterMonitor.exe"
"%ProgramFiles%\Acronis\TrueImageHome\TrueImage.exe"
process -k schedhlp.exe
process -k schedul2.exe
process -k TimounterMonitor.exe
process -k TrueImageTryStartService.exe
exit

Hey, thanks for the tip. I just downloaded this  Process Viewer/Killer/Suspender and changed the path in your batch file and it works a treat ! Cool. No more useless processes running in the background. (I'm using an loder version of Acrtonis)

(Nod32 for which I won't renew the subscription, but just switch to MS Essential Security, gave me a false positive for Process.exe)
565
Interesting find. Please keep us posted and tell us about your impressions.
566
i use these add-ons to organize my tabs :
Session Manager
- Tree Style Tab to organize tabs.

It doesn't get in the way, can drag tabs to different firefox windows.... Save windows with different sets of tabs as different sessions etc.
The tree style tab thing allows to have a clearer view of what I'm reading, researching, and I can reorganize subjects by drag & drop. There are many useful options.

Maybe not as intuitive or user friendly but works well nevertheless, and I can control RAM usage better this way (by keeping opened only the tabs I need).

Reviving this old thread... I got to it "diagonally" by reading the newsletter...

Anyway, I've been using TitleLog for 2 years or something, and really like it. But Anuran is a great complement !

Anuran + ManicTime  or Anuran + TitleLog, and one is pretty much covered...

What I did for a while is review title log at the end of the day, and roughly write what I've done in my Outlook/IQ Calendar. But sometimes just looking at windows titles (+ inactivity custom messages ... Which title log cleverly features) notification isn't enough info.... And so Anuran should fill in the gap.

In another thread, Tom mentioned InstantBoss combined with TitleLog. Interesting combination too, I find.

===

I'm trying ManicTime too, The interface is gorgeous and everything is well implemented. But... it might just be a bit overkill :  almost at 40mb just sitting in the system tray...  :( and the paid version is on the expensive side : 67 $ (this is, if you need the fancy stuff like

  • Password protection,
  • Categories (group applications into a category),
  • Advanced search (search through the whole database Learn more),
  • Stopwatch (time yourself while you are working on something),
  • Scheduled backup, Hide system tray icon,
  • Show notification after inactivity,
  • tag time immediately after you return to your computer.

Note that some of these could be provided by another App like Anuran.

Very cool. Yes this works perfectly. Thanks for the little AHK lesson, Nod5. Much appreciated!
This gives me the incentive to dive into AHK a bit more.

I don't know AHK's syntax much (didn't have the time to double check), but this worked too.

Code: Autohotkey [Select]
  1. ^+c::
  2. IfWinActive, ahk_class EVERYTHING
  3. controlgettext, clipboard, msctls_statusbar321, ahk_class EVERYTHING
  4. return

I did that because the other way interfered with other parts of my own script when put at the beginning -- and I didn't want to put it at the end...

I also had to enable an option in everything to show the file path in the status bar... Otherwise I got "Object 1".  :)

I haven't been able to copy path in explorer though. We'll see later.

Thanks for showing me this neat trick. I should use AHK more. I use it for many little thing, but haven't delved in it enough.
Many thanks Nod5.  :)

In addition to the everything plugins you can also use a FARR alias to quickly open a separate Everything window with a search phrase. I use two spaces at the end of a FARR searchphrase as regex pattern. Very handy as you can first search with FARR and, if what you're looking for isn't found in a second or two, just tap space space.

regular expression pattern box:
^(.*)\s\s$
Results box:
Everything Search: $$1 | dolaunch C:\Program files\Everything\Everything.exe -search "$$1"

(modify the path to fit your installation directory)

Very handy. Thanks Nod5!

(I use the TinyEverything Plugin. It works generally well but the problem is that French accentuated letters aren't displayed properly and I can't launch these entries. So, all in all, even if I'd prefer to have all results in the farr window (one reason is that it's so easy to copy the full path of an entry... ctrl-c), the everything UI works better at this point.)

Isn't another issue around the sexiness of new projects and the dismissing of old ones?  The next idea a developer has is really sexy and he definitely won't make the same awful design decisions he made last time.  While the developer is busy writing an application that will cure all the world's problems, the blossoming user community starts asking for bigger and better functions, especially ones that were outside of the original design.  After enough pestering, the developer has to part from his new, perfectly-architected application and work on the old one to shut the forum dwellers-up.  To speed up the process, he doesn't even want to understand how the original big, hairy mess of code works and he bodges it in with no thought for the architecture.

It works...just.  The forum-dwellers are happy bunnies and then go-away and dream-up new and exciting things the developer can add to the application...and generate a list of bugs with the code the developer bodged in.  The developer then gets sick-to-death of these dwellers constantly asking him to add more stuff to this hateful, badly-architected old code and vows never again to revisit that damn forum again.  Instead, he destroys the forum and sets-up a complex and impossible to use "support ticket" system where these people can never ever meet and exchange their evil thoughts again.  If it's complex enough, he might even be able to avoid ever seeing these issues again and can get on with the new and sexy project.

Maybe I'm wrong though...

Sexiness can always be a "problem" (can also be a solution, depending on how you look at it), regardless of the activity or the perspective.

Users too fall for sexiness... They often request new (almost useless) features to counter their natural hedonistic adaptation or because they'd like the software to be simply... "sexier" (sexy UI anyone ?) according to their own standards/vision -- which has nothing to do per se with the actual function of the software.

IMO, if the developer uses/depends on his own software daily, there are less chances for sexiness to have as much influence on development. As a user he might see better improvement of functionalities as an advantage, not a drag. Of course, if he doesn't see the point of such or such improvement in his own day to day use, it might actually be a disadvantage for the other users.

Living Room / Re: Dell knowingly shipped millions of defective computers?
« Last post by Armando on July 07, 2010, 11:08 PM »
You can buy a Dell (or HP or Gateway or Acer or....) cheaper than it would typically cost you to build your own PC.

Typically users who build their own PCs use high quality components.

I leave it to the reader to read between the lines and come to one's own conclusions.

For a laptop it's a bit more complicated (yes, it's possible... But... Less choice).

almost everything on my Dell 6400 laptop had problem at some point or another. First Year : DVD writer, Battery, Power supply. Then : LCD, Battery, and DVD writer again.

It's anecdotal, I know... I'm even wondering if another company would really be better anyway. Still... I complained about Dell here a while ago and AFAIC, Dell isn't the brand of my next laptop. Too bad, I'm giving my money to some other company next time. They can't be worse and maybe I'll actually get lucky.

At some point I tried to see if there were some statistics about laptops and quality/durability somewhere, but didn't find anything convincing. That would be a nice start -- not the end of the story, of course (remember Toyota ?). Just a table with numbers about returns, defective parts, etc. At least one could see what the company has been doing for the past year(s).

And, no, I won't buy a toughbook, sorry... I'm not a construction worker.
574

The only thing that can hinder software is the software developer himself.

If he's not prepared for the butt load of feedback or he feels too bothered by the negativity, that's pretty much all on him to read through what he can implement.

I'd say so to. If you can't handle a forum and all the suggestions, yes, maybe it can become a problem.

A different question could be asked (not in this thread of course... Not hijacking intended) : How can a software developper make the best usage out of "user forum" to constantly improve his/her software (best and worst practices) ?
575
I find that Jibz makes a good point, but Target does to.

Yes, I too, sometimes, feel annoyed when some critical suggestions or bug reports are received with workarounds as if those would replace true solutions. Or when someone feeds me with a long justification for a problem that should rather be fixed. But do these really hinder software's development? Maybe in a few situations, but it's very contextual and one needs to be aware of the broader picture (not just the individuals' perspective) to really know whether it's the case (a hindrance, or not) or if, on the contrary, the offered explanation/solution is more of a balm that won't have any "negative impact" (i.e. : no evolution) on the software in the long term, etc.

E.g. :
Is the "super user" just dismissing problems ? Is he giving a workaround plus suggesting something to the developer ? Is he also encouraging the user to express his views ? Is he also sending a PM to the developer to urge him to do something about it ? Etc. etc. IMO, it's not easy at all to know what's truly a hindrance and what impact posts and threads have on a developer’s work and perspective.

By dismissing that kind of  “help/forum participation”, framing it and making generalizations (whether accurate or not), I think one simply runs the risk of discouraging participation in general and actually slowing things down even more. Who wants to feel like a jerk, spending time to help others but being laughed at in return?

So, yes, I did say I sometimes feel annoyed when getting workarounds and justifications instead of true solutions, but… usually, I actually feel grateful for any feedback, even if someone is offering something a bit different than what I wanted or expected. I mean, really, unless I explicitly said what I wanted/didn't want (e.g. : "Please, no workarounds. This is a criticism/suggestion/issue that isn't calling for any "dirty quick fix"), how would/should the person offering help guess that I'm not interested in what she has to offer, and, more importantly, why would she even assume that, especially if she’s participating in… a forum? And, even more importantly, why would that person assume that her workaround/solution would influence the developper to not go further and dismiss the problem... instead of the contrary : inspire the developer to find a better solution?

Now, as Target says, I find that when someone isn't satisfied with a workaround, it's really up to the person having a problem to clearly explain to all and especially to the developer what happens and what is expected (e.g. : a dumb workaround is okay for the next few weeks, but it won't do next month ; this fix should be implemented, etc.), in the forum, AND using the other provided vehicles. The more explicit, the better. And if it's important, post more than once. And all others who feel the same, post too (send, PMs, emails, etc.) .

And, really, in general, those who help aren't guilty of helping or hindering the software's progression, unless (maybe) they've been told not to and still do. But how often does that happen ?

My 2¢

(Yes, I’m a “super user” in the IQ forum. Fortunately, I don’t have a long signature at the bottom of my posts, so I think I’m okay... ;) )

P.S. : And, from what I observed and witnessed, user forums are extremely helpful to developers... But some close them once software reached V1 for marketing reasons. I can certainly understand that, but I'm not sure if it's the best alternative.
