Java / Re: Java to exe converters
« Last post by tinjaw on March 14, 2008, 08:28 AM »
The short answer is that you don't want to do that. I'll try to explain why.

But i want to know is there any  native compiler for this,a dn how we can create java to exe using this.

You cannot do this. jar files contain code that is compiled already, but compiled to byte code. This is then run on the Java Virtual Machine that knows how to interact with the underlying operating system.

Technically, what you are looking for is a cross-compiler. One that takes java source code and cross compiles it to something like C++ object code so it can be compiled to native windows code.

Yes, the preferred way is to use webstart. However, if you want an exe, I would suggest the following. Use Auto IT or AutoHotKey and create a exe that just calls java.exe (or javaw.exe) and passes it the jar file as a parameter. This would allow you to maintain the java as a jar file (so it can be invoked the "normal" way) and still have an exe for the "other" users.

Does anybody know of any good code profilers for Windows C++ code that are freeware/FOSS? The developer is using MS VS 2003.

I should say that, despite the media coverage of this movement, Reznor is not the first in offering his music in such a free way (compared with the rest).

If you just look at is as "just another free download" it might appear that way. There are several things that are different though.

Number ONE is that it is being released under a CC license. This is HUGE. It let's fans enjoy, not only the "official" version of a song, but also provide infinite possibilities as source material for origional thought and new works. TTBOMK nobody of Trent's stature has do so on this big of a scale.

Second, NIN isn't just offering a CD at a "Donation Ware" price, but a variety of formats at the time of the origional release. Before it was traditional audio CD now. iTunes and other format paid downloads soon after. Then a boxed set some years later. The extended collector's edition years later. NIN released essentially all of that from Day 1. Some free tracks. $5 for the whole album. $10 for the whole album on physical two CDs of the same quality as "store bought" traditional retail CDs, that also include DRM-free digital versions on the same CDs, as well as a more expensive ($75) deluxe boxed set, as well as a $300 true fan uber boxed collector's edition.

Third an existing website visited by the artists directly that will host fan's remixes and discussion there of.

Fourth it's Trent Reznor !!!

Fifth Who needs a fifth when you have the fourth?

Technically Nine Inch Nails is a them, but Trent has always been the core of the group and the one who interacts with the media and the fans.

I just downloaded and listened to the whole album and I like like it. It is an instrumental work, which is a departure to what NIN has done in the past, but is still in the same musical spectrum as their other albums. I know only a few will understand what I mean when I say I see Ghost is to Trent Reznor as This Binary Universe is to Brian Transeau (a.k.a. BT). Brian always wanted to work with a full orchestra and got to do so because of Monster (he did the soundtrack). Trent has always wanted to do a sort of storytelling via music that he knew wouldn't work as a standard music industry release as anybody other than true fans would probably not like it because they only like NIN's top 40 hits. Ghost is only possible because of the way it was made and how he is selling it.

As with most works that venture from the beaten path of any artist, I am sure Ghost will age well and be appreciated more every time it is listened to. You need to digest it to understand how it differs from past works and why. That can't be gotten at first glance, but instead requires some study.

But I will all but guarantee that none of Ghost's track will ever be heard on any mainstream radio station and will get tons of airplay from college stations.

Too bad freedom doesn't come in 56kbps AAC+...

FLAC can easily be converted to any other format. FLAC is as good as having the digital masters.

They also offer (lossy) mp3 and (lossless) only-plays-in-itunes formats (AAC IIFC)

CC? Music? Lossless?  :-*

You can feel the freedom in all its FLAC juicy flavor.  :-* I think this might even inspire me to dust off my old m-audio sound card, midi keyboard, and monitor speakers and make some remixes myself.

I'm going to take the "half full" approach on this and giggle silly as mega$ lawyers from the Mega Internet Service Providers are going to get up there and fight for freedom for the tubes. I am sure we can harvest some of that expensive chewy goodness to use against them the next time they turn against The People's Medium.  :P

I am home now and downloaded my purchase. Here is one of the most beautiful things I have seen in quite some time. The image below has been copied from the NIN album Ghosts I-IV.

Yes, that is right. One of the most successful artists in the music world has just made his album available under the Creative Commons. YEAH! I call that a win !!

I probably sound completely insane so I'll just stop. :)

If that's insane then I guess I better not even start.  :o

I use a different version of a preloader. It comes standard on all Windows version and consists of two parts. The first is the Startup folder and the second is the Minimize Window button.  :P
565
then just open telnet.

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo never use Telnet. It is insecure. Use and SSH connection, and as Allen said, get PuTTY so you can do it (and other SSH-related stuff).

I am going to go one step further and say that you shouldn't be relying on a simple copy for various reasons, to include inefficiency and it is not transactional (i.e. I can fail partially).

I understand there are levels of tackling this type of thing and some of them may be overkill in many (if not most) cases, however... I still suggest you look into using version control. Your Dreamhost account already has subversion. I can elaborate if desired, but the quickie explanation is that you can work on a local copy, commit it in to svn, check it out on the test server, test it, make any changes, commit it to svn, check it out on the production server.

I would make this SOP and create the necessary batch/scipts to support this. You can then just modify the constants to account for changing usernames, passwords, host names, etc.

Trent Reznor once again proves that talent alone can make money. The news is all over the music news sites. There's a good summary article on Salon.

1 second summary:
  • Price is $0.00 to $300.00 USD
  • The $300 version is limited to 2500 and was sold out in less than 24 hours. (hint hint That is $750,000 direct to the artist in one day.)
  • people can freely sample the work and it is provided in a lossless format
  • You can even buy a good ole CD, but even that has lossless digital version on it as well.

I did a lot of searching a few months ago, and ended up using and liking Serene Sounds.

Thanks suleika. I've installed it on my laptop and it is nice. A nice simple clean application.

(Taking my own thread completely OT on a tangent...)
I look at the interface for SereneSound and I find nothing wrong with it. It is nice and simple. But I bet if we put it in front of a good designer of UIs they  would probably cringe (at who know what) and come back with something that just is nicer in some squish undefinable way.

any way...
568
I guess I should elaborate.

Personally, I use (and recommend) ChatterBlocker while trying to concentrate in busy environments.

I'm am looking for a coworker who has Tinnitus. We are wondering if listening to pink noise will help relieve the symptoms when he is trying to concentrate on work stuff. That got me thinking that I don't have "the perfect pink noise generator" program preselected (so to speak) to suggest to him.
569
I will assume you know what white noise is, so pink noise is like white noise but conforms more to nature as well as provides a constant energy per octave. It is a good way to "blur" other distinct noises by mixing with it.
570
There seem to be a whole bunch of Pink Noise generators and mp3/wav/etc files out there. Does anybody have a favorite app that generates pink noise so that you can listen to it with headphones, like while in a busy office or a coffee shop?

Post New Requests Here / Re: IDEA - A different type of computer timer
« Last post by tinjaw on March 11, 2008, 08:39 AM »
I don't know of a way to get the computer to turn on automatically when it gets power.

It is a setting in almost all BIOSs in the Power Management section. I don't remember what it is labeled and I am at work right now so I can't open the BIOS, but it will be something like On Loss of Power or On Return of Power. The options are usually

  • on
  • off
  • last state

But there's a great quote (which I can't remember exactly) that's been spread around a lot since the Patriot Act came to town, something along the lines of: "Those who give up personal liberties for the feeling of security deserve neither."

Those who would give up Essential Liberty to purchase a little Temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.

More Info
This statement was used as a motto on the title page of An Historical Review of the Constitution and Government of Pennsylvania. (1759) which was attributed to Franklin in the edition of 1812, but in a letter of September 27, 1760 to David Hume, he states that he published this book and denies that he wrote it, other than a few remarks that were credited to the Pennsylvania Assembly, in which he served. The phrase itself was first used in a letter from that Assembly dated November 11, 1755 to the Governor of Pennsylvania. An article on the origins of this statement here includes a scan that indicates the original typography of the 1759 document, which uses an archaic form of "s": "Thoſe who would give up Essential Liberty to purchaſe a little Temporary Safety, deſerve neither Liberty nor Safety." Researchers now believe that a fellow diplomat by the name of Richard Jackson is the primary author of the book. With the information thus far available the issue of authorship of the statement is not yet definitely resolved, but the evidence indicates it was very likely Franklin, who in the Poor Richard's Almanack of 1738 is known to have written a similar proverb: "Sell not virtue to purchase wealth, nor Liberty to purchase power."

Hm, that looks pretty cute. Dunno if the museum would have much use for it, but the boss loves technology so he'd probably demand that it was integrated on the website somehow, hehe :)
I wasn't sure if they did in-house development of multi-media stuff or if the museum had an homegrown kiosk setup for explaining the exhibits.

techidave,

There are plenty of websites that will do that type of thing for you. Almost all of them will offer a free account to test 1-3 IP addresses and send you emails when then go up or down. Some will also allow you to test out getting paged via beeper or SMS/TXT message. Some I have personally tried and can recommend are...

There are dozens more. Just Google for "website monitoring" and you will find 'em.
