When that happens it offers to Force form fill in or something similar. That seems to always work for me so far.

Screenshot Captor / Mention in Computer Act!ve
« Last post by justice on March 24, 2009, 07:34 AM »
I think I noticed Screenshot Captor in Computer Act!ve as one of the 50 Top Pc Tools Free article (The best free software: Why pay for expensive software when you can get better products at no cost? We show you the best free programs for every task).

I'll try and find it again when i get a chance and add their text blurb.
And it seems to have been mentioned quite a few times on their sites.

Chrome, safari, opera don't have plugin support - they're working on a safari plugin now. Chrome's next once google completes the extension api. Opera doesn't have plugin support. All these browsers can already use lastpass through javascript bookmarklet (which seems to work with some random number code? -  obviously not ideal).

FF & IE now have a lastpass plugin - logins get detected (roboform pops up after login but before pageload, lastpass pops up after login after pageload)

Ive only used it with firefox, not yet with IE.

I use roboform, but I just installed lastpass alongside it and it looks like now by using firefox with roboform I'm populating the password for use with lastpass + chrome. hehe

DcUpdater / Re: DcUpdater v2 Preliminary Flirtations
« Last post by justice on March 23, 2009, 05:34 AM »
Also the left panel has 2 goals at the moment:
  • Finding the program you looking for
  • Overview mode of the status of programs.

Ideally for the fist goal you would see all programs in one screenful (micro listing). For the latter it's found that people have trouble deciding between more than 6-8 choices.

How many programs have people installed that show up on that listing? the second panel will already be quite text heavy so perhaps try and keep the left panel uncluttered.

Are program versions not properties from programs?
  • If so, add a menu item to 'update to beta versions' for all programs under a view menu or to general preferences
  • Add functionality to open up the program to show which alternative versions are available for that program to download a specific version rather than the latest one.
  • If the 'update to beta versions' is ticked then the latest version is the latest version, otherwise its the latest stable version.
  • Program specific options should be situated in the right panel, as that shows the details for a program. (perhaps 'always update to beta' and 'never update to beta' which overide the general beta properties).

I think the grouping makes the program unnessecarily complex to be honest, even though its an amazing programming feat.

Jungledisk does this but you have to pay a small fee for it. And for example Cobian Backup does this if you're looking for local backup.

If you press cancel on the preferences window then next time it comes up garbled. Should be fixable for TODAY now I know what the problem is.

Ok let me go past them 1 by 1, thanks for the feedback by the way that drives this program!

- make auto-marking tasks for closure an option; I prefer to mark them myself (very long PC uptimes here)
You use JCST in a new way that I haven't thought of! Excellent :) - I thought the auto marking was the reason for using JCST. So please help me understand why you use JCST. Then I can support that kind of use better. So if you can confince me then I'll build in the option haha.

- enable the 'menu key' on the keyboard (so that it brings up the right-click menu) so that it works like in almost all other apps
Ah didn't realise that wasn't working. Will add that in.

- make double-clicking an entry "switch to" the task (like in other programs)
Good shortcut. Will add that in. edit: now you suggested it I keep clicking on the titles expecting it to switch! :D

- add an option whether using "switch to" closes the JustCloseSomeTasks UI or not
Do you wish to keep JCST open to manage multiple tasks sequentially? How would you use this?

- if possible, add "- Windows Explorer" to the explorer tasks (they now only have the folder name as task name)
Useful, will try to add that in.

- allow the user to set a global hotkey for bringing up the UI
That's already there, right click on the systray icon for JCST and choose preferences to change it. Control-[ by default.

- close the UI when ESC is pressed once
Excellent improvement once again, this will go in.

- in the UI, display the time not in seconds but in minutes when it's more than xxx seconds and in hours when it's more than yyy minutes
Good refinement, will add this in too.

Thanks for your suggestion and sorry for the bug.. its due to the 'special' coding abilities from yours truly hehe.

I've noticed it a few times... the problem has something to do with the preference window being independent from the main window and a bug which is trying to draw to the window that's not open, i think. If anyone knows a way to replicate it 100% of the time please let me know.

Developer's Corner / Re: Frustration with User Feedback
« Last post by justice on March 18, 2009, 10:20 AM »
I noticed your portable application wrapper is posted under Announce your services/products - a more commercial orientated forum used to promote software from organisations rather than individuls (well that's the impression i get). I always posts my scripts under Finished Coding Snacks, this has more of a homebrew feel which maybe accounts for the difference in feedback.

General Software Discussion / Re: TGA / PSD thumbnails in Vista 64 Explorer?
« Last post by justice on March 18, 2009, 04:21 AM »
Sounds good but SysWOW64 does not exist on my vista 64 system.
However it seems it works now without having to do that (first link). Fantastic info thank you so much I looked all over the net for days.

Shouldn't be too hard to check the referer and direct to the download page if it's a direct link? Not sure how effective this system is though. Also the developer can create a startdownload page that meta refreshes to the download link - that way most people that copy the link won't copy the actual file but the page that starts it.

It's all about keeping control really for what is their responsibility. The reason I think most people direct link is because its more convenient then clicking 'download' then having to go through another webpage to find the 'actual download'. Pointing to a startdownload page however would overcome this.

Yep Filehippo has it still - but for corporate use you'd want to get it from apple + the agreement might be just for qt not itunes.

Apart from installing it via third party sites like FileHippo, is there any way to get Quicktime only from the apple site now? They seem to have removed all standalone links.

You like seeing people moving to overpriced hardware and an even more tightly controlled closed ecosystem than Windows?

DcUpdater / Best practices implementing update checking?
« Last post by justice on March 10, 2009, 08:08 AM »
Ok I've added update checking to most of my scripts now over the last half year - and I've never been satisfied with the implementation.

* checking for updates manually - non  intrusive but not always latest version
* automatic checking for updates on statup - always latest version but annoying if don't want to update or not connected to internet
* automatic checking for updates every week or so - good compromise?

Also should the user be prompted before checking for updates? if no in combination with no updates you could do it silently which is better for user, but annoying if update dialog comes up when update is found without user asking for it. if yes then they always have extra prompt even if there's no update..

Seems there's always a negative. Maybe this is worth adding centrally for DcUpdater so that the user can set this once and then all programs respect this.
