Living Room / Re: Sexual harassment taken too far...
« Last post by Eóin on May 19, 2010, 12:22 PM »
I agree completely that sexual harassment is a minefield that's too easily abused. And of course without more details it'd be impossible to ever know the truth, but something about the circumstances as they're being reported has me leaning towards him being a slime-ball rather than her crying wolf.

I was reading about this, I suspect the scientific community is being too one-sided. The Daily Mail article sheds a little more on light on the back story

[Dr Rossana Salerno Kennedy] also says it was not the first time [Dr Dylan Evans] had raised sexual subjects with her and said he admired Casanova.

Sounds to me like he's now hiding behind the screen of "academic debate". If anything is being diluted here it's the distinction between professional and personal interactions.

Thanks 40hz, excellent reading. And of course it kinda makes me realize how guilty I am of those things myself. Though I'm sure I don't really consider myself half as guilty of them as I actually am :D

My pet annoyance: People who jump to a conclusion about why someone or something is the way they/it are, and then they proceed to go and judge or get annoyed over that reasoning even though it never existed outside of their own minds.

[edit] And my pet annoyance 2: Everyone suffering from Morton’s Demon.

Interesting daddydave, a search for LaTeX indeed did not have any material or fetish related results. No sign of StarED though, are you sure it existed online at some point Deozaan?

If they already have a large database of searches indexed, why can't they just search all results of the case insensitive index for the matching case sensitive search?

If they designed for case-insensitive searches from the start then almost certainly they'd have done something like lowercase everything before it goes into the index as well as lowercase each search prior to checking the index.

It's very possibly that they can't offer a case sensitive search because there simply are no uppercase letters anywhere in their index.

Actually I downloaded the font, that only happens at the smaller sizes. So I suspect it's a bug, possibly the font is only really intended for print.

It's because like Python, F# uses indentation to control scope.

To be honest though, I'd take curly brackets over the alternatives any day

I often prefer to uses tabs rather than spaces for indenting, previously I had set VS to use a tab width equivalent to 10 spaces specifically because the space width in MS Reference Sans was so small.

However recently I've been toying with F# which requires 4 space indentation. So I fired up a font editor and changed the space width in MS Ref. Sans to match the width of a number. So now the font is, in my opinion, also perfect for '4 space' indentation.

Deozaan, I agree with you regarding the Netbook Remix edition. I wonder though if it's actually aimed at a different audience, specifically a more casual PC user?

I admit that the connection between the iPhone/iPad approach and say game consoles always niggled at the back of my mind. But I think there is a big enough difference here that such an argument won't work.

The precedence in the mobile phone and pocket PC markets was always one of openness, Apple have only been able to go against that because of their market dominance and so the case for stifling competition to me seems very real.

They will need to force Apple to allow downloading and installing from other sources in order to make any decision against Apple stick. THAT would be nice to see.

Plus that would have the knock on effect that MS would be forced to do the same with their new Windows Phone 7. The conspiracy theorist in me mused that MS might have been copying Apples tactic just to force a case like this eventually.

Interesting follow up, Adobe confirms plans to move away from Apple

Adobe has posted a short response to the letter Apple boss Steve Jobs has written about Flash technology.

In it, Adobe said the legal terms Apple imposed on software developers had led it to shift its focus away from Apple.

[snip]

Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen told the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) that "when you resort to licensing language" to restrict development, it has "nothing to do with technology".

The article is well worth the read.

Actually the game of capitalism is very much at fault. It's a system which celebrates and rewards greed above all else.

Socialism, which as you correctly say has nothing to do with secret police, is a different and nicer game altogether.
