General Software Discussion / Re: split PDF files - context menu program?
« Last post by brotherS on November 07, 2007, 11:43 AM »
Thanks for all your comments! Since it doesn't happen daily, the annoyance is not big enough that I'm willing to spend money to get around this problem (yet?) ;)

Currently I use PaperPort to do the splitting, but that means I sometimes have to close other programs first (limited resources), and I have to move the documents around manually.

Crap! How'd I miss this post - welcome back, brotherS - you've been missed!

yes, welcome back! it's been exactly 6 months between your posts.. :)
Thanks guys  :) Funny coincidence that I made that exactly 6 months... those were 6 very busy months, and while the level of 'business' (in the fullest meaning of the word) won't drop much, I plan to post a little bit more often again. 8)

I'm not sure I understand what you're looking for - an alternative to the "Open With" functionality in the context menu or an application to split pdfs into discrete pages?
Both! :D I need such an application that I could assign to the "Open with" menu. I don't want to open an external program, just right-click such a file and pick "split PDF file" from the context menu.

General Software Discussion / split PDF files - context menu program?
« Last post by brotherS on October 17, 2007, 08:04 AM »
Hi,

long time no type!  8)

Is there a tool that I could use like any other "Open with..." tool? I sometimes get PDF files of 2 or 3 pages and need to split them (always into single pages), which I now do in another program. Not the most handy solution... Any ideas?

zridling: I want you to get up right now and go to the window. Open it, and stick your head out, and yell, 'I'm as mad as hell, and I'm not going to pay those prices anymore!'

I totally agree with what you said.

PS: If you didn't watch the movie, you might be slightly confused now. No problem, just watch the movie. 8)

I found this (Amazon S3): http://www.amazon.co...e.html?node=16427261 Sounds promising, I bet there will be some new services based on it and like it.

Living Room / Re: how to find out if external HD uses USB 1.x or 2.x?
« Last post by brotherS on April 04, 2007, 03:23 AM »
BrotherS, try removing the USB controllers then let Windows detect them again.. btw, there are some suggestions here for troubleshooting USB in WinXP and Win2000 also maybe you want to consider a BIOS Update for your motherboard..
Thanks for the suggestions. I can't remove the USB controller since it's onboard. The one USB slot that connects to the front is connected with a cable, but I don't really want to unplug it while the PC is running.
;)

Microsoft's suggestions don't really help (I guess I need the missing drivers), and AFAIK I got the most recent BIOS update already.
557
I think I'll be interested in a DC discount for SFFS too! Just tried it, pretty intuitive. I'll probably only need the basic version, so a percentage discount for both versions would be cool.
558
And another question regarding how those sync tools work: let's say I want to sync drive A to drive B. When I start the process, will those files, that are still on drive B but already deleted on A will be deleted on B *before* additional files from A will be copied to B?

make sure you dont have usb2 disabled in the bios -- i reset my bios recently and it turned off usb2 support.
IIRC my BIOS doesn't have such an option.

That's a weird combination. I don't understand why you have INTEL and VIA USB on your board. Did you install a PCI card?
Hmm, no, but I had to replace my mainboard and the new one came with an extension that gives me a front panel for USB etc. Maybe related?

It seems a lot of USB ports are working, so perhaps just try using another port?
According to what lanux128 said above they are all working on 1.x only now.

About drivers. Win XP SP2 usually needs no drivers for USB but you can still try.

Thanks! On both sides I see several drivers, but nothing that says "USB driver". Does the Intel Chipset Driver take care of USB too? And how can I find out which version of it I installed a while ago?

Btw, I'm using Windows 2000.

brotherS, you can easily check what version your USB controller is by doing the following:
1. Call up the Device Manager.
2. Expand the Universal Serial Bus Controllers branch.
3. If it says "Enhanced USB Controller", then your system is USB 2.0. Otherwise, if it says "USB Controller", then the system is USB 1.1.
Thanks, *that* seems to be the problem :-(

The text the arrow points to says device isn't working as it should since Windows can't load the needed drivers.

But where do I find the drivers? I just know that it's an ABIT IT7-MAX2 V2.0 mainboard.

Thanks for your answers!

I have both syncBack SE and backup4All. For a while I had a license for  Genie Backup Manager (which I returned). I have tested Cobian an others (it's not trivial to test this kind of software).

My recommendation is Super Flexible File Synchronizer (SFFS). We talked about it here. You can check some ideas for a perfect backup tool here.

I find SFFS the fastest, most reliable, and ... well most flexible. The developer answers mail within minutes, and actually implement features suggested!
That sounds nice! Thanks for pointing me to the discussion, where I found this.

I like some things about SB, for example the  fact that you can hit pause and resume a profile, and that options are (finally!) nicely structured and with an icon.

But in my tests SFFS is really fast. SFTP and webDAV (and amazon S 3!) is a plus. Another interesting feature is the "detect moved files" feature (lot less transfer).
The "detect moved files" feature sounds really helpful!
Does SFFS offer pause and resume options too?

I wouldn't discard getting a DC discount, since there are a few of us already interested...
:)

Oh, and what is Amazon S3?

Living Room / how to find out if external HD uses USB 1.x or 2.x?
« Last post by brotherS on April 02, 2007, 03:12 PM »
Hi,

how is that possible? I have the feeling that it should *not* take almost a day to move 50 GB from one external HD to another. Both drives are what's being sold these days, not old crap.
563
I think I'll use a somewhat advanced sync tool with a GUI for this task. Which? Haven't decided yet, looking for more hints :)
564
have a look at this thread -
theres recommendations for NHbackup which recognises usb drive from serial number or by drive.
https://www.donation...30.msg55451#msg55451
Thanks for the pointer. While that is a great feature, I don't really need it, mostly because I use TrueCrypt (https://www.donation...p?topic=2132.new#new), so I assign drive letters to the volumes manually anyway.

General Software Discussion / Re: suggesting: "best encryption"
« Last post by brotherS on March 29, 2007, 01:18 PM »
Just want to add: I'm now using f0dder's fSekrit to encrypt a few text files on my USB stick, and TrueCrypt to encrypt my external HDs. Maybe I'll even start to encrypt parts of my main HD.

Never heard of Allway Sync before - looks good! --> http://allwaysync.com/screenshot.html

SyncBackSE looks pretty professional too...

Hi!

I know we have some users who are really experienced with backup programs. Here's your chance to offer a great solution! :D I want to most easily do this:

- backup certain files and folders from my HD to my USB HD #1
- backup the complete USB HD #1 to my USB HD #2 (which is connected less often)

I'd like it be more of a sync than of a backup operation, as only the files that are changed/ new in the source path should be updated in (and copied to) the destination path. Files that have been removed in the source path should be deleted in the destination path too.

It'd be great if I could set up all the source and destination paths *once* only and then, whenever I feel like it's time for a backup, just plug in the HD(s), start the program and hit a (few) button(s) to start the backup process.

Your optimal answer would point me to a software solution (does not have to be free) that is still in development.

Thanks!

I used the free version for a long time until I decided that I don't need it anymore.

Love it!  :D

General Software Discussion / Re: I found a jewel of a program: XMplay
« Last post by brotherS on March 24, 2007, 03:45 PM »
XMplay is "OK", I use it on my USB stick. For my PC I still prefer Winamp - it's much, much more customizable (hotkeys! plugins!), and still only uses 2-8% CPU and 12 MB RAM.

See https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=3198.0

PS: I don't understand who *anyone* could only use the Windows MediaPlayer for playback! It's SO BAD!  8)
572
When I once did this I used

- DVD Decrypter (http://www.pctipp.ch...wnloads/dl/24654.asp) to get the DVD contents from DVD to my HD

- AutoGK (http://www.autogk.me.uk/) to get AVI files from those (huge) files

@edyshor: please try to accept it or just ignore it, the concept won't radically change just because you still don't agree with it. Whatever you do in life, you'll never be able to satisfy *everybody*.

Like one speaker once said: "If you didn't upset at least one person until noon you aren't taking enough action in life." :D

Faster file finder ever: Avafind, like locate but finds in real time (no need to press enter) and automatically indexes all new files, so in every new file you don't have to update database, just avafind takes cpu for a millisecond and the file is indexed.
Further the scout bot on the upper right corner displays all the new files and there is a my picks column showing the files used regularly. I have to say here that most of the times I am looking a file/folder this is new. The interface is much better than locate and I strongly advise to give it a try.
Since you like it so much please post a mini-review in https://www.donation...index.php?board=42.0

Reasons why I can't imagine it's better than Locate (https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=1385.0):
- last update is from 2003 (!!)
- it's somewhat pricy shareware: $39.95
- the interface somehow doesn't look like keyboard (only) users could fully use it (I might be wrong)

So, please post a mini-review! :)
