I have only tested for 10 minutes but i have to get to bed.  Initial trials however yielded positive results.  Focus seemed to stay with FindRun (only one not repeatable glitch).  Also, the duplicates are gone... thank you thank you!  As far as lnk files are concerned, I was able to open most of them.  I only had trouble with CDBurnerXp (but this lnk file only seems to link to the folder not the exe.  No idea how windows knows to run the exe) and an excel lnk file.  The excel lnk is to a particular excel file and is located in the Recent folder.   Dont know if it's worth spending a huge amount of time on these lnk problems.... now to bed.  I will install the new version at work tomorrow and continue testing.  Thanks again,

Kevin

Did I answer the focus question fully?  Also, I will be around some tomorrow morning, but then from mid afternoon till Saturday afternoonish I will be working overtime at work... something about getting bugs fixed before the next round of testing begins ;)  But, I will to attempt to try any betas when i have time.  Thanks, and let me know if you have any other questions,

Ok.  Here is my list, after removing the duplicates I found.  While we are listing the bug fixes, figured we could go ahead and make of list of desired things.  Is there any way to make one thread for bugs and another for wishlist?  And make it so that there is a list at the top of the thread with all the current items?  I envision something where people could write a reply with a feature request and then you or another moderator could decide if the feature request/bug "deserves" to be put at the top.  This would save having to read through pages of people chatting just to see if things have already been requested.  Sorry, rambled there...

Bugs:
- Refresh rate of GUI is too high (according to me).  An adjustable refresh rate would be nice.
- Focus is lost too easily: Start FR, launch an app.  While that app is opening start FR again to launch a second app.  Now the first app comes up, relegating FR to the background with no hope of rescue!  [FR should always be on top. (?)]
- This may be just me.  Having trouble launching the lnk for CDBurnerXP Pro 3 (have to laugh after having read that program naming thread... this one has most of the cliches!  Decent piece of software though.).  No other lnk files seem to give trouble however.
- Posted by mario_a: You might want to mention somewhere in the Help file that the "-tray" command line parameter launches the main program (FindAndRunRobot.exe) in tray mode.
- Posted by mario_a: On the "Configuration" tab of the Options window, all items except "Stop search exact alias match" show help text on the status bar when the mouse is hovered over them. (my version shows the "start automatically with windows" help)
- When right clicking on the column header there is an entry with target spelled "tagret."

Wishlist: (Just for organizational purposes, not next release)
- launch urls from GUI (ie type: www.google.com or google.com to go to open your browser and go to google)
- Hotkeys (like win+c opens opera... my favorite hotkey!)
- change which columns to show and order in GUI
- browse button in GUI for choosing folders to search
- posted by piedone: maybe it would also be possbile to search for something...and when you find it...to assign it an alias...for easy finding. click right mouse button on a result and assign it a name....; next search...it can be also found by that alias.
- Posted by nudone:  could you implement a feature that allowed searches to be done. say, type 'g vintage cars' and up pops google with the search completed for 'vintage cars'.
- What about regular expressions?

Not a problem.  I just dont want to be that whiner on the forum going "You arent making your software the way I want it fast enough!"  So please let me know if I get annoying!  However, I do think that FindRun is an excellant program and though i have thought about going back to other software, it's only for a split second because no other app does what FindRun does... especially as cleanly!  Give me a few hours (I have some other things I want to get done here at home) and I'll reply in this thread with some of the major "bugs" I've found.  I dont have a problem with not adding new things... that would be great, but also much more time consuming.  Besides it is better to fix what is here rather than create new goodies that still dont work quite right!  So... I'll be back.

Find And Run Robot / Question
« Last post by kfitting on June 02, 2005, 04:48 PM »
Sorry, dont mean to be a retard, but any word on a new version?  The more I use FindRun the more I like it, but the more annoying become the small problems.  In particular: losing focus (getting hidden behind opening apps if you try to open two apps in quick succession) and  multiple entries (seems I'm getting swamped by duplicates even though I have the suppress duplicates option checked), and the quick update feature/curse (people could probably haggle over this one ad nausea!).

I noticed the thread on hotkey managers in the "Living Room."  Just wondering if you are still planning on implementing this in FindRun.  This isnt nearly as big a deal as the above, just a question I had after reading the other discussion.

Like I said, i dont mean to be pushy!  It's just these sharp edges on an otherwise smooth program give me papercuts every now and then!  Thanks,

Kevin

Or you can try FastStoneViewer at www.faststonesoft.com.  Of course this evening the site was down for exceeding bandwidth (first time this has happened).  But I know the program is turning people's heads.  It certainly did mine.  You can check out the latest demo over at Betanews.

Features lossless crop (jpg)
Lossless rotation (jpg)
Brightness/contrast
Compare up to four images at the same time
Excellant fullscreen mode
Excellant slideshow mode
and theres more... probably a lot I dont even use!

Could the speed of the search updates be variable? Recently I have been having selecting the wrong program because while my hand is in the air moving to the numeric keys, the search updates, making a different program correspond to the number I press (pressing the escape key would not help in this case!).  It would be cool to have a slider in the options (or a millisecond input box) to change how fast the the search updates.  I realize that this could become a pain since we all want things to happen as soon as possible, but I wouldnt mind being able to try different refresh speeds!  Thanks,

Heh heh!  Your "too complicated" comment makes me laugh mouser!  Just goes to show that two different people have totally different needs/wants.  I was comparing Keynote to TexNotes as far as user interface.  Talk about cluttered!  Not that TexNotes isnt powerful...

Let me second the Keynote nomination!  EXCELLANT interface.  Also, 2.0 is in the works and looks to incorporate many of the features missing in 1.65 (eg built-in table support, real hyperlinks, picture support, etc.)  If you want a good preview, do a search on the TRichView component since this is the component Keynote will use in the second version.

Other programs I have tried: MyInfo, GSNotes, TexNotes.  But, none of these have the same file structure as Keynote and their interfaces are clunkier.

Another minor issue: when adding folders to the search list in the config it would be handy to have a "Browse" button.  That way you wouldnt have to type (or copy and paste from your file manager).  Just my 2 cents!

Best E-mail Client / Re: ASRT 5/14/05 - EMAIL CLIENT

Just switched over to M2 bundled with Opera.  The whole database concept beats any other email program I have used hands down!  I have used Pegasus Email (very nice... lots of config) and Outlook (only at work!!)  and M2 is cleaner and more powerful than those two, though it has a tad less configurability it seems.  My choice: M2.

Just thought of something else that could be handy in FindRun.  Could there be a way to launch an app in the background so it doesnt take focus?  If I am browsing the web and realize that I want to open a file browser, I launch it via FindRun, but as soon as it starts, it automatically jumps to the foreground and obscures the website I was viewing.  I dont know how to make this handy to switch on and off... it would most convienient to be able to enable on a file by file basis.  Just an idea!

Incidentally, I use Notepad2 and it does have column selection... though I didnt know until after I read your column (which said it didnt have this capability) and tried one of the other programs activation methods.  All you have to do is hold down alt and it selects columns,

Ahhhh, but CDWave is not just a recorder.  I use CDWave for its splitting features.  It's so handy to be able to open a 200+ meg wav file, split it into 10 tracks, and be listening to those tracks 5 minutes later!  Before CDWave I had to crop part of the wav file, save that piece, reopen the entire wav file, find the next piece, crop it, etc.  CDWave is fast and clean!  As far as recording goes, however, there may be better options.  Prior to CDWave I had looked around for something which split wavs but couldnt find anything.  The closest thing I got was Nero's built in tool for splitting a wav prior to burning, but it was rather cumbersome (and obtuse too!).

Another great piece of software is CDWave.  Found myself using it like crazy tonight! And it's only $15 (well it was when I got it anyway, havent checked recently).

I dont really do any fancy sequence to get it to generate duplicates... certain searches just give them.  I have one .exe that shows two matches ot the .exe and one to the .lnk.  A keynote file shows two references to the .knt file and one to the .lnk file.  I dont do anything different... anything you can think of?  I'll test it,

Find And Run Robot / Bug?
« Last post by kfitting on April 25, 2005, 06:19 PM »
Hello,

I've been using FindRun for awhile now and I must say it is a handy program.  I'vee also noticed a weird thing: despite checking the "Remove Duplicate Entries" option I still get two entries pointing to the same files.  I could understand if it was a different file extension, but sometimes I get two links that are .exe or two that are .knt etc.  Is this me?  Also, is there a way to remove duplicate pointers even if they have different extensions?

Finally, i have also noticed that FindRun is sometimes forced out of focus during crucial times.  For example if I open one application, then while it's starting,  I begin to open another one, when the first application fully opes it steals focus and FindRun is left sitting there looking pretty.  And when this happens, the pause/break key doesnt close the window, presumeably because FindRun doesnt have focus.  I have tried this with "Prevent other applications from stealing focus" in XP and still no luck.  I will not however, be surprised if removing me from the equation would solve all problems!!

Also, just to be a big pain in the butt, has the next version been started yet?  ;)  Great program, keep it up!

Dont quite know where to post this, but I think that an excellant review topic would be defragmentation software.  I havent been able to find a whole bunch of them, but I know that I dont want to use Windows built in software!  I am currently using 0&0 Freeware, but would be interested in finding out more about the shareware ones before I consider buying one of them.  Thanks,

DesktopCoral / Question about feature....
« Last post by kfitting on April 13, 2005, 06:04 AM »
Hello,

I havent installed DesktopCoral just yet but I was wondering if it can be used to split the screen into different parts and have applications expand into the parts.  For example: I have four different windows that I use at half the height of the screen (so I can see any two applications at a time).  Can I use DesktopCoral to allow me to set a divder at half screen that these windows will maximise to?  Also, could I set individual program settings so that other windows could be maximised to full screen?  If you have any questions about what I mean, let me know and I can provide a screenshot... I think!   Thanks,

Kevin

One quick suggestion is to somehow give the user a way to halt the search updating. For example, the user starts typing and the results start coming into the results box.  The user sees one he/she likes but by the time they have pressed the number to launch it, it has been moved!  I understand that you can turn off automatic updating in the options, but perhaps you could have a key that, when pressed, would stop the box from updating.  The search would continue however, and when the user released the key (or tapped it again possibly) the screen would resume updating with the current search results.

Sorry if that was confusing... I realize the demand for this could be pretty minimal.  I only suggest it because I have done it quite a few times.  Let me know if you have any questions as to what I mean.  Also, if it adversly affects program complexity, consider it "not suggested!"

Another quick report... wont say whether its me being stupid or a bug just yet!  I saved my configuration to another file (kevin.ini).  Now, everytime I exit FindRun and restart the program, my settings are all reset.  Even after I reload the new ini file my search folders still dont update until I try to create a new entry in the list.  Is this me?  Thanks,

Kevin
