Any favorite methods for transferring files from PCs?

For one-offs "adb push" seems good enough.  For some more complicated transfers am trying out QtADB (0.8.1) with some success [1].


[1] Was helped tremendously via following comment:

1) When launched, QtADB displayed application window then crashed. Cause of problem is missing network resource, which raise SIGABRT in classes/updateapp.cpp, line 57 (function UpdateApp::gotWWW). Probably because QtADB version updates currently is not available. Perhaps QtADB 2.0 should check for resouce availability too and shouldn’t crash only because update server is missing. To avoid this problem in 0.8.1, automatic updates must be switched off. Open QtADB.conf (Linux users must look in /home//.config/Bracia) and set checkForUpdatesOnStart to “false” as displayed below:

Stream-of-consciousness log...

Booting the default option didn't seem to go anywhere here using VirtualBox, but choosing the vga option worked

To log in...username / password: bbq / bbq

Choose 'r' for README and take a picture for later reference or for those with decent cognitive abilities, read and remember -- type 'q' to exit.

Log in again and choose 't' for "Start X session", and choose some window manager.

The Ctrl-Alt-Backspace key sequence seems handy to exit the current window manager -- choose another window manager if still curious.


Looks like they used xbindkeys to get many(?) of their window manager setups to use a common set of key sequences -- nice.

On a side note, if any one knows how to achieve alt-tab like behavior from the command line (so this can be set up via xbindkeys), I'd appreciate hearing how

SO.. it looks like the lesson is, IF YOUR DRIVES ARE ALWAYS RUNNING RELATIVELY COOL, trying to run them cooler won't improve reliability.

Nice obvservation!  So there's a data point that in favor of keeping drive temperatures between 14 and 38 C -- so if it's too hot for us, perhaps it's too hot for them?

FWIW, I've used VirtualBox a fair bit with Windows 7 64-bit quite stably for some time -- virtual machines being *NIX, Windows, etc.

FWIW, I didn't use LVM.  Also, I think I may have used the following packages for guest additions via apt-get, synaptic, or equivalent:

  virtualbox-guest-x11
  virtualbox-guest-utils

May be 40hz can comment on whether that sounds appropriate.

FWIW, there's also a "Google Search" plugin.


Actually, it doesn't look like it's possible to do what I was thinking.  IIUC, kupfer is inspired by the QuickSilver application, and IIRC, there it was possible to create a trigger (global shortcut) that invoked a command which let you type some text which if followed by Enter would perform a web search.  I didn't figure out how to do the comparable thing in kupfer unfortunately -- triggers exist in kupfer and it is also possible to create commands...however, it doesn't look like it's possible to create commands that when invoked allow you to type the text of your query (though you can make commands that operate on "selected text").

In the process of transferring the customized media to SDHC -- hope to boot from it soon.


On a side note, tried the persistence feature of LM (Ubuntu actually I guess) to add VirtualBox, but may be it was because of the USB set up I have...it worked but was intolerably slow...For reference, below are the instructions I adapted:

Booted customized "CD" (> 1 GB, USB media) ok, and had some success with running VirtualBox.  ATM, speed seems better than when using LM + persistence.

BTW, as part of the customization, I chose to delete some "Windows" related stuff -- the resulting iso is about 150 MB smaller than the original iso   May be if I work at removing other things I can fit the result on a CD...

I've heard from some that Ubu's remastering tool (UCK) works just fine with Mint.

Thanks!  I'll give the GUI (looks like uck-gui) a try -- may be if I run into problems the HOWTO you mentioned will come in handy.

It looks like Ubuntu's version of tasksel has a "Virtual Machine Host" option -- I just compared the sources of Debian's (version 3.14.1) and Ubuntu's (2.73ubuntu26), and I don't see such an option in the former.  Anyone tried this?

I didn't try it, but rather:

• chose "run console application" when prompted
• used apt-get to install virtualbox (and virtualbox-dkms and other recommended packages)
• added the mint user to the vboxusers and vboxsf groups (used vigr and vigr -s for this)
• exited the terminal
• continued with the rest of the outlined steps

I then worked on transferring the iso to an appropriate location.

I installed it on a VM and it crashes VirtualBox every time it tries to shutdown. I'm not sure what went wrong. VirtualBox is working just fine with my other VMs.

Hmm, I just gave this a try a couple of times, but no crashing...this was after having done an initial update of packages.

FWIW, the VirtualBox here is 4.2.22 on Gentoo.

It's particularly convenient if you happen to use FF's search engine integration capability  Though to get kupfer to pick up new additions via FF may be a little bumpy (for better detection consider restarting kupfer -- though there may be a way to manually trigger a rescan).

I'm currently trying to create a custom version of SystemRescueCD, but it's a fair bit more involved than what I'll want to do on an ongoing basis.  There appears to be support for a backingstore though:

FWIW, graphical browsers crashing happens in *NIX too -- I've taken to using command line tools for large downloads (e.g. wget, aria2c, etc.).

I was informed on the #gentoo-prefix channel that Debian is not currently supported   But rumor has it that this might start working at some point in the future...

In the mean time had some success installing the Nix package manager.  One benefit of having this on the somewhat minimal system is that packages for the purpose of running the underlying system (and providing VM support) can be kept separate from other things (such as web browsers, video players, etc.).
