FARR Plugins and Aliases / Re: google dollar exchange rate plugin -- sketch
« Last post by TucknDar on June 22, 2008, 09:05 AM »
thanks, works now! very useful, but a request would be to be able to write 'ex 10 gbp usd' to change which currencies to use.

about the crash, I'll look into it a little more. It's been a while since I actually opened the plugins dialog, so maybe there's another culprit. I'll reply about it later

Great idea for a plugin, but it doesn't work for me... The screenshot explains a bit more:
Clip.png

both USD and NOK are valid values, but 'NaN NOK' isn't too helpful ;)

Also there is a crash whenever I open the plugin configuration dialog in FARR. I've saved the script as fscript.js in plugins/FARRCurrency along with a copy of the latest fscript.dll I could find.

any help appreciated :)

I have a folder.jpg cover image file in almost all my mp3 music album folders.

Maybe a plugin can be made that utilizes the new HTML output mode to make searching for a mp3 album much cooler!

Just tested this with a .doc file which is associated to MS Word in HKLM and Textmaker in HKCU, and it opened correctly in HKCU.
557
Maybe I'm on thin ice here, but sounds a bit like file associations may be read from a specific part of the registry, namely HKCR (aka HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes\) while it's also possible to have user-specific (or per-user if you will) file associations in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\

Look at this post I made not so long ago: https://www.donation...ex.php?topic=13573.0

edit: The latter registry, HKCU\Software\Classes normally takes precedence (sp?) over HKLM\Software\Classes, but maybe FARR goes directly to HKLM?

Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: Jungle Disk Mini-Review: offsite data storage
« Last post by TucknDar on June 17, 2008, 05:42 AM »
Great review, and ironically I just (as in yesterday) purchased a license for JD. Personally I'm actually not using it's built-in backup facilities, rather I'm using SyncBackSE to sync/backup through JD which works pretty well, and gives me more options for the backup-specifics.

It's great to be able to just open up the mapped drive in Total Commander and copy some files and feel that "ah, that's them backed up and safe". And the price to pay to Amazon I suspect will be minimal with my usage. :)

Just a minor suggestion for the review, list the price of JD somewhere easily visible (it's $20, btw).

scancode: Would you mind posting about this in the Softmaker forums? Or to spare you the trouble, would you mind if I posted about your icons, and linked to this thread?
560
the farrfox source code is open source c++ so if anyone feels like messing with it, please feel free :)
Would if I could :-[

But sounds good that you agree on the matter, mouser!
561
I find the startup scan to be kind of annoying, can't you make a small index so you don't have to search every time? Cause it seems it's searching every time farr is restarted :)
I support this request. Would be great if I could choose when to reindex the bookmarks myself, something I sort of expect the "ff `" command could do.

FARR Plugins and Aliases / Re: GTDTiddlyWikiPlus for FARR (alias pack)

I hope that Farr  wont have much memory footprint after all these new features. I really like new features but I guess speed of Farr should be the most ultimate priority.
Agreed. Haven't noticed any problems so far, I should add, but this is an important point.

Great newsletter! Best in a while, actually :) And how did I first miss that interview with skrommel?!? Great read

These are awesome!

Like I said on IRC, SoftMaker should give you a free license for their office to use these icons!

Thanks for making them

Living Room / Per-user file associations
« Last post by TucknDar on June 06, 2008, 04:35 AM »
Finally I found a solution to set per-user file association! I've been looking for this for quite some time, but never found a software that would let me do this. :D

Then I came across the registry entry HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\ which is where file associations are stored for current user (obviously). Maybe it's been mentioned here before, but this really has been bugging me so I thought I'd just post here in case anyone else was looking for it.

Now it's as simple as copying the key from HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\ and changing the default open command in the latter. That way there's a default system association, i.e. .doc -> MS Word, that's overridden by the current user's setting, i.e. .doc -> TextMaker/OpenOffice/whathaveyou

Now if only there was a piece of software that would let me do this without bothering with the registry, I'd be happy. Any takers? It would make for a nice coding snack, I suppose. ;)

Yes, nirsofts recent files utility is excellent! And it can produce lists through command line, so perhaps there's some way that FARR can read the output? At least when the new HTML-stuff is in place it should be possible.

speaking of FARR and recent files, is there a way to let FARR read the entries in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ComDlg32\OpenSaveMRU ?

This is where a bunch of recent items is stored. My recent folder is pretty useless, since apparently it needs explorer running as shell, and I don't do that...

A tiny request: Could you please add a "Quit" item to the systray menu?

Me?  I can perform a lot of the same tasks with Mouser's Find And Run Robot (FARR) here at DC!!   :)

Jim
Yes, I'm with you on that! I was very compelled by the idea behind RecentX, but I didn't find myself using it. Even installed it a second time to give it another go a few months back, but no, not useful to me. Still a good idea and I'm sure it's great for many users, though.

Cool thread, but even cooler with a little example of what can be done with each of these tools. Either a downloadable alias file or just a snippet of code would be excellent. I've only just looked into creating my own alias' and using commandline tools, so some examples would be VERY helpful!

using the words best, top or sex in any title gets more views see, which is what it is all about for sites trying to become the top best sexy software site ;)
Good point, so maybe a new name for FARR could be Sexylaunch, Toplauncher or Bestrunner?  :P
Why not go for the jackpot? BestTopSexLauncher.  :)
That's better, but how about BestTopSexLaunch Robot :-[
