That's just wrong... on both ends.  But it's funny and hard to feel sympathy as it shows how much the sheeple pay blind attention to apple ads.

DC Gamer Club / Re: Valve Announces Steam OS

If you want to decamp from MS how many games do you get to keep?  :-\

All of the ones that are on Steam that work on the other OS?  Or am I not understanding the question?

DC Gamer Club / Valve Announces Steam OS
« Last post by wraith808 on September 23, 2013, 04:26 PM »
They've done it... Steam is getting it's own OS.

I'm thinking this is in preparation for the rumoured SteamBox console.  And this explains the recent focus on getting games to Linux.

Steam is getting its very own operating system, Valve announced today. It'll be a combination of Steam's current platform and Linux.P

SteamOS is a free operating system designed for living rooms that Valve says "combines the rock-solid architecture of Linux with a gaming experience built for the big screen."

So... are they just applying a DWM over a distro?  I dunno... don't have enough experience with Linux to say.  Can someone else chime in?

^ That's exactly what my friend does, and he's an audiophile and musician.  Even on his normal gaming desktop, he's connected to stereo equipment for the sound.

Anyone who thought that this was a security measure must be the same people that rely on the 4-digit pin on their iPhone.  It's a deterrent, nothing more.  And anyone who thinks anything otherwise should expect a world of pain when they are disabused of that notion.

Well, you've seen the review of Zeus.  What in Sublime did I not cover?  I've used Sublime Editor before in a limited fashion (I've also used TextMate) and I just don't see the comparison. They look like totally different approaches, so I don't even know how to compare them.

wraith, i'm having a hard time with your terminology.  what is your difference between a desktop box and a settop box?  i consider anything that runs normal windows or a user-installable OS a "full desktop".  are you referring to just the form factor?

What I'm using is the WD TV Live Hub (WD Link).  There are several out there like it... before this, I used the Asus OPlay.

They're closer to cable boxes than any computer... thus set top box.

I've gone through both ends of the process, and I can say that while I had a desktop equivalent, I rarely used it to its full potential.  For a while, it was fun being able to game on my 46" screen.  But once the novelty wore off, all I was really doing was watching movies/tv, listening to music, and browsing the internet.  And it was loud, even though I had a silverstone power supply and case, which are made for HTPCs.

My sub $200 mini computer was quiet, small, and did everything I asked of it.  It played games, but not the more powerful ones.  But with 2 24" monitors on my desktop, I didn't miss it.  In the end, I was making excuses to use the power that was there, again, all I did was watch movies/tv, listen to music, and browse the internet.

My settop box plays movies/tv, music, and browses the internet.  It doesn't require anything in the way of maintenance.  It's quiet, and I don't miss the power.

I'm pretty much decided that for the tv, my use case is only settop boxes from now on.

I've updated the OP with links to comparisons- one of SlickEdit vs. UltraEdit and one from the Zeus forums on ZeusEdit vs UltraEdit vs Editpad Pro.  I haven't used UltraEdit in years; I'm not sure how much it has changed with UEStudio, but it wasn't in the same caliber when I used it.

I started with Visual Basic also.  It's a common start.

...Well, professionally.  In college I started with C and Pascal as my primary languages.  Then professionally, I was writing for MStest which used something similar to VB at the time.  Then to Delphi (so... back to Pascal in other words).  Then to C++.  Then to C#.

Another interesting way that I learned was via the Beagle Bros contests (in old fashioned BASIC with Assembler calls).

I had a very simple program that I made for an RPG, and every time I'd learn a new programming language, I'd re-make it in that programming language with a few improvements. :)

N.A.N.Y. 2014 / Re: The NANY Retrospective Thread

I've had some hits and some misses.

  • Skyrim Character Manager has by far been my biggest success, both personally and with the users.  Unfortunately, I haven't been as timely as I should have been, or it would be even more popular.
  • AutoFTP has been my second, even to the point that someone tried to usurp the software and sell it and steal the name.
  • XLDataAnalyzer was only really used by the person I made it for to my knowledge
  • Swoopo changed their interface, and then went out of business, so SwoopoSpy never found any use other than for me to my knowledge.
  • I never went any further with WordCaster- a few people asked me to update it, but I never got around to it, unfortunately.
  • Desktop URL Embed was the most surprising.  It was a last minute thing, and I just didn't want to let NANY down.  But it was the one that was actually featured on a few sites, and it was the simplest to do.

I think superboy might have the right idea.. Which is to not do all this incredible struggling to get these HTPC tv-theatre-view-mode fancy and painful UI systems to work.  That's where all the pain is.  Instead just use a monitor/mouse/keyboard to select what to play.. Problem solved.

I use a combination of a remote and a keyboard with a mouse embedded.  Those lap keyboards make using the keyboard not that big of a deal.

I've tried the powerful desktop version (same problem that you're experiencing to a lesser extent with the noise- had a box that had a quiet fan, but it was still loud), the less powerful desktop version (it was nice- still the problem of interface, but it was nice, and silent- but I ended up giving it to my son to use as his desktop since he doesn't play PC games), and the settop box (nice and seamless... but it's not a computer).

I'm sticking with the settop box version.  The only thing I can't do on it that I wanted to do was game, and I don't really need to PC game on the huge screen.  But it's definitely a decision that should be based on what your use case is as there are going to be trade-offs as you've experienced.

Saruman makes heavy metal music.  Your argument is invalid.

24 hours after you launched it, eh? You could complete most modern games in one sitting and then request a refund.

They're apparently being handled by a person.  And with most modern games having achievements and such, I think that saying I want a refund and having 50% completion rate would get you denied...

it wasn't perfect.

Zeus is certainly not perfect and there are always things that can be done to make it better.

I wanted to take this time to note that having an active developer that listens to the user-base actually outweighs anything that I've found, and development is definitely more productive using your product. :)

Yes, there is a word limit.  Even so, I wouldn't just tell it as I think in this case, it's irrelevant.  It was good bang-up action, but it wasn't relevant to the story.  And as he doesn't have his memory, it's more of a dawning realization- a putting together of the pieces- that I'm going for.

We should have someone who is a regular on DeviantArt or PolyCount start some sort of competition/challenge for people to make Cody/DC related art. That would be cool.

It sounds cool to have a competition for the official NANY mugs.  Don't know how to go about organizing it, but it does sound cool.
