My daughter says the damaged floppy trick always worked for her.

Then she could blame it on the school's computer eating her floppy on Friday, with the teacher as a witness, and buy herself till Monday to actually do the report and bring it in on a good floppy. (only works once per teacher)

« Last post by app103 on July 28, 2006, 03:33 AM »
At first I was against it, but when I finally gave in and agreed to allow my daughter to totally change her sleeping habits to something that was very abnormal for a someone her age, I was pleasantly surprised to find out it worked very well for her.

Instead of sleeping at night like normal people do, she would sleep after coming home from school, wake up at about 12m-1am and get all her homework done, write poetry, clean her room, etc. Then start getting ready for school.

Gone were the days of not doing her homework, the quality of her work increased, and morning chaos was gone, with her making it to school on time almost every day and fewer days absent. And my home was much more peaceful.

Before she made the change, she was notorious for not doing her work and showing up late....the typical slacker. The change turned her into a powerhouse of productivity. And the clean bedroom was a nice bonus!

I do believe that some people are just naturally nocturnal.

I have always felt like I was doing something unnatural when trying to be a day person. It just never seems to work for me. I enjoy the peace & solitude of the night. Working during the day just makes me more prone to frustration and more likely to end up in a bad mood. I think better at night.

It is unfortunate that most people don't have the luxury of being able to live by the hours that they are best suited for. This is still a world for day people and I don't see that changing any time soon.

If you are a night person and have a career that allows you to keep the hours you are best suited for, you are a lucky person.

If you would like to try this yourself, this page will be a big help to you:

Converting from Delphi to C++Builder

I have followed this guide to convert a small project from Delphi to C++ Builder...without knowing any C++.

It wasn't as hard as I thought it would be, but my project was kind of small & simple. Most of it is just a matter of using a lot of Find & Replace. Just be careful, follow the steps in order (very important), take your time, and if you get stuck on anything thing, Google is your best friend.

Additionally, you can find some Delphi & C++ Builder references on my ebook site:

Poke the Bunny (as fast as you can):  http://www.platinumgrit.com/poke.html

The bunny page is a perfect example of something catchy bringing in traffic to a website. The main site is a comic that many have discovered as a result of that bunny. In their forum there is a section where people explain how they found the site. The majority found it by accident after someone gave them a link to the bunny and deciding to investigate the main site after having so much fun.

Which brings me to this thought...

We need something like this for Cody!

The idea of issuing keys and having those that don't donate come back in 6 months isn't a bad idea...

At that time they can make a donation, or make a different type of valuable donation of info about the program they have been using...

What do they like about it?
What do they not like about it?
What features would they like to see added in a future version?

Not all donations are of the money type, and donations of information can be valuable too. And after 6 months of use, they should be able to answer questions like that about the program they have been using.

Those answers can be used to improve the program, increasing it's worth, and in turn maybe increasing the amount of people that will donate money, or the dollar amount they are willing to donate.

My best time for getting anything done, including housework, is whenever the people I live with are asleep.

Usually that is about 3am - 9am.

Catster is the myspace for cats. Every cat has a page, just like people do on other social sites. It's kind of cool!

And there is Dogster for dog lovers too. Exactly like Catster, except dogs.

This was Meow...my favorite cat in all the world. (he died last summer at the approx. age of 18)

He was abandoned by his original owners. They moved and left him behind. He was pretty skinny and in bad shape when we found him.

I am guessing that his owners moved to some place where they weren't allowed to have pets. That would have to be the only reason for abandoning such a wonderful, lovable, well behaved cat.

I didn't know what his original name was, so I asked him. He told me "Meow", so that's what we called him. Even if that wasn't his original name, he answered to it, so I guess he liked it.  :P

This was the kind of cat that even dog lovers loved...and people that didn't like animals loved him too.

He didn't claw up furnature...or people. He knew where he didn't belong and you would never find him on the kitchen table or on the top of the fridge. You never had to tell him "Stop that!"

If a small child was to pull his tail, he would just get away and go hide. He wouldn't attack even to defend himself.

He loved children and dogs and other cats and was very laid back...like a hippy cat.

He had an odd 'maternal instinct' and loved taking care of abandoned kittens, cleaning them and training them. (he was a male, so that's why it was odd)

He was a strange kind of animal...in a wonderful way....nothing like Chewy.

He is the demon cat from Hell, that I still have. It's my daughter's cat and she is the only one he likes and won't rip to shreds. Chewy hates everybody else and will viciously attack anybody he feels like, which is everyone, including me.

He also claws my whole house to shreds. (my poor desk chair!)

I was always hoping some day my daughter would move out and take him with her but that's not likely to happen...the taking him with her part. She says he would probably kill her children in their sleep, if she ever has any. So I am stuck with him.

One of my favorite old movies is The Man with the Golden Arm.

I grew up listening to the soundtrack to it. (my dad is a HUGE jazz freak) I became very familiar with the music. It's a great soundtrack.

When I finally saw the movie for the first time, I was awestruck. I have never seen a movie where the soundtrack fit in quite like this one. It was one of the things that really made this movie. Almost makes you wonder if the music was made for the movie...or the movie was made for the music. They are such a perfect match for each other.

I don't think I would have appreciated the movie as much if I had never heard the music first. If you are ever going to see this movie, get a copy of the soundtrack and listen to it a couple dozen times first. Then watch it. You will be glad you did.

It was made in the 50's and stars Frank Sinatra. (nobody sings in this movie) It dealt with the subject of heroine addiction....something unheard of at that time in entertainment history. It was one of the first to ever deal with that heavy of a subject matter.

Frank Sinatra plays a drug addict that was released from prison and has decided to go straight & legal and make a good life for himself. But he's on the same streets he was on that lead to the problems he's trying to get away from, and it pulls him right back down.

His struggle to beat his addiction and beat life on the street really pulls at something inside of you. There is a whole withdrawal scene that is quite realistic....graphic.

It might not seem like something that great from the way I describe it, but believe me it is. Compared to the movies of today, the storyline wouldn't be such a big deal...we are used to that kind of thing now...but you have to remember when this movie was made...it was a big deal.

This is by far Frank Sinatra's best movie. After seeing it, the soundtrack gives me chills now.

And as far as Audrey Hepburn...Wait Until Dark is one of her best. Another must-see movie....a fantastic thriller.

Edit: I have since found out The Man With the Golden Arm is in the public domain and is considered legal to download...you can watch a free stream here if you have Real Player.

let me warn you to never use a real person's name, it is not a good idea!

I let computers name themselves...like pets do.

They will tell you if you 'listen'.

EdTheSlowAss: as in Special Education...slow...came to my home by riding the little yellow computer bus. Everyone knows it as Ed...and everyone else calls it Ed...and when referring to a conversation I had with a real guy named Ed to a friend of mine, she was a bit afraid of my P1...thinking my PC was now talking to me.  :P

Yasmin: Ed's younger, faster, but just as retarded sister (not going to tell you who 'Yasmin' really is in real life.) :-[

Murphy: my dead P3...as in Murphy's Law...anything that can go wrong will, at the worst possible moment, nothing is as easy as it looks, and everything takes longer than you think. It died on Halloween, right before I was to teach a class on HTML and not only were my files I needed hostage, but that made it impossible to teach the class because the software I was going to use doesn't run on Ed very well. :'(

When that P3 is rebuilt and turned into a P4 Prescott 3.0, I will hopefully be able to call it Lee...as in Lee Majors, who played the 6 million dollar man...they made him better, faster, stronger...and hopefully that is what will happen to that P3. (I hope it doesn't end up keeping that Murphy reputation it has always had.) :o

Jordy: my Jornada 540 Pocket PC (name makes sense, doesn't it?) :tellme:

Doorstop: an old Zenith Data Systems P1 that I found in the trash which I have never tried to find out if it works or not.

Lappy: my daughter's laptop (she wasn't very creative naming it)

Yes, I relate to computers and have relationships with them much in the same way most would relate to people. (don't be thinking anything dirty) And just like people, they all have their own personality, quirks, and character flaws.

What I have:

http://img523.imageshack.us/img523/5575/ghettodesk1ju.jpg

Name: EdTheSlowAss

NEC9820 specs

The Sun 447 monitor doesn't show up in the specs, but that's what it is.

The ghetto desk is comprised of 2 filing cabinets and a table top ironing board across an open drawer.  ;D

What I use it for currently:

  • 9x application testing
  • backup for personal files
  • keeping my sanity when my daughter is hogging the good pc
  • getting work done without internet distractions (digital art, web design, programming, typing up recipes I have collected & created over the last 20 yrs into .txt files)

Up until about 7 months ago, it was the only pc I had...for about 3 yrs because of my P3 computer dying. It's very stable, despite the fact it runs WinME. It was my very first PC...the one I spoke of in the first podcast

  • I don't install anything on my OS partition other than my OS. I install all programs to a different one. Most do not need reinstalling if I wipe out and rebuild my OS.
  • I configure things to move as much off of my system drive as possible...bookmarks, email, start menu, quicklaunch toolbars, etc.
  • I keep a log of everything I install, every change I make, all settings I tweak...with the dates and times....and I keep a printed out copy in a binder notebook. I also make screenshots of some stuff to make it easier to reconfigure, or so I can compare, in case something goes wrong at some point in the future. They are also printed out and kept in the notebook.
  • I export all settings in any program that will allow it.
  • I have a series of batch files I run as  scheduled tasks that copy any files that change on a regular basis that I couldn't afford to lose that can't be moved of my OS drive. I have at least 14 backups of most things...a week's worth on another partition and a week's worth on another hard drive. I also have backups from both pc's on both pc's...meaning in some things I have 28 backups in total.
  • I also burn stuff that would be hard or impossible for me to replace...and I make 2 copies...one of which I do not keep in my home. My father has a case with disks of mine...and I have one with disks of his....just in case something happened like a fire or burglary and everything was destroyed or lost, I would still have the disks I keep at his house.

As soon as I finish organizing & merging the data on this pc, that is a combination of data from 3 pc's, and my system drive's data is small enough to put on 1 dvd, I plan on making a full backup and setting up my own restore partition to make it much faster & easier to roll back or restore.

I have had experience with restoring after wiping out my OS and starting from scratch. Most of the programs didn't need to be reinstalled, just needed me to enter their keys again. A few others did need reinstalling, but they were no big deal.

When setting up my new pc, I was able to copy my entire software partition from two 9x PC's to XP, and most stuff worked just fine without needing to be actually 'installed'. In the case of the exceptions, I would rename the folder from the old install, install to a new folder, and see if the old one worked...if it does, I delete the new install folder and rename the old folder back to what it was. (This is about the best way to reinstall AOL and not lose any of your bookmarks, email, or any other customizations and/or personal files.)

Keeping a log makes it easy to reproduce the same steps I had done before and get everything back just the way I like it. It also gives me a clue as to what could have caused the problem that lead to me having to start all over again, too.  It also made it easier to set up another pc with the same tweaks & settings...making it much more comfortable for me to use. It also makes it easier to reproduce things on someone else's pc, when I am troubleshooting problems they might be having and tweaking their settings to fix it.

StartPro is something I have used for many years.

Really good for removing stuff too. It has it's own 'recycle bin' called the Smart Bin where it stores stuff you remove in case you made a mistake and want to put it back. It has a nice Explorer-like interface and very simple to use.

I have the old version 1.3 installed, which was freeware. The newer 2.0 is shareware.

I attached screenshots of both. The one for 2.0 I found on another website.

The 1.3 version has some features specific for Win9x...and the newer 2.0 has features specific for WinNT.

1.3 will run on both, though....just lacks the Services section, I think.

General Software Discussion / Re: Scripting vs. Programming
« Last post by app103 on July 23, 2006, 08:59 AM »
If it's code you are writing, you are doing some sort of programming, in my opinion.

Others may disagree with my idea of web designers that hand code html in notepad as doing some sort of programming. But consider this: it's code they are writing....and it's not always easy to do. You try making a knockout looking website that validates, looks right in most browsers, and only use notepad to do it, and you will see. I think it's about time that the programming community give good web designers some of the credit they deserve.

On the assumption that scripting is easy and programming languages aren't, I would have to disagree. I have seen some very complex Javascript and some really simple VB & Delphi apps that only took a few lines of code to make, if any at all (simple Delphi example & complex Javascript example).

if programming = cooking then

  • html & css = prep chef or mom's home cooking
  • scripting languages = sometimes a short order cook, sometimes a chef in a smaller restaurant
  • low level programming languages = being both the farmer that grows the food as well as the master chef that cooks it
  • high level programming languages = all of the above, depending on the skills of the programmer and what they are creating

I have to admit I was confused when the donation credits first were implemented. I was under the impression that 100 credits was $1.00 and not $10.00. Boy, was I pleasantly surprised when I found out otherwise.

I think moving to a 1:1 system will be less confusing to newcomers that might make the same assumption that I did.
