Living Room / Re: The Free Videos Thread

That video Ren was super -
it reminds me of this 'game' we made as kids with a sheet of paper:
you'd fold it so as you'd end up with ... imagine a wide cone, divided in four - it can be split/divided first one way then the other. There would be text written in all the hidden parts - the other person would have to choose, say, a colour, this would be spelled out (open/close/open-the-other-way/close/etc). Thumbs and index fingers underneath to manipulate. At the end a folded-over bit would be exposed with the answer to all your questions (or telling you something you didnt want to know).

Anyone know an actual name for that game? I mean how do you search for that...

You can still get a full OEM copy of Windows 7 Pro 64-bit for about $75 if you shop around.

I can get a full OEM copy of Win 7 pro for 35 euros (45$) :P
oooh, let me bask in that a bit :D I'm so used to things being a lot more expensive here than in the States.
(this bargain is made possible because the courts here declared it legal to sell on OEM versions.)

I dont want to take this off-topic,
but I couldnt figure out if this meant you were happy or not with the ipad
(I think happy?) -

I hesitated over getting an iPad ... and not a day goes by that I've regretted it. In fact, with each passing day, I'm more and more happy I didn't now that I know even more about it than I did then.
... I think you've made an unintentional headwrecker there 40 :)

One of the commenters on GOTD suggested something called dreamMail. Scanned their site. Looks promising. Anybody try it? (I'll admit I'm more than a little leery of using a program from China for something as sensitive as my email client.)

I tried it a long time ago, 2006. I had problems then, I think the user forum was mainly in french so it was difficult for me.
There was little or no Import/Export support &
Keyboard shortcuts didnt work on a german keyboard.

Had a look again in 2010, but didnt install - there was still no english info, nor download easily available:

I see they have a site now and reasonably active english lang forum

1) I really dont see business allowing the desktop be taken away from us (for whatever reason).

2) I see business as being a big enough market that it will be worthwhile for MS to continue supporting and developing the desktop.
Admittedly it will not have the priority it had before for MS, and might not have as much software available if mobile becomes a bigger and more attractive market for developers.

skwire, would a refresh button be possible?

I'm having to resave some files - I then have to select all, clear the list, and add them again to confirm new 'status'.
(This a bit akward cause they are in various folders.)

It looks like it's features might be a lot more accessible than the better known file managers -
just wondering if it can be used portably?

A lot of people more expert than me doubt the wisdom of combining desktop and touch interfaces, but from reading reviews it *sounds* like they've done a reasonably good job.

Perhaps. But I beg you to consider that when you attend a carnival - and find yourself in a crowd that's applauding the performance of a dancing pig - it's important to remember most people aren't so much applauding the pig because it dances well. They're simply applauding because they're amazed a pig can do something which resembles a dance at all.
 :-\

You've tried it - I haven't (maybe I should give up there...)
For business people there is no advantage to this over 7, which probably means that 7 will be the next XP.

Maybe with 9, [they'll have done their advertising] they'll bring back start, make it so as desktop is completely separate from the other.
We'll see...

^ lol tranglos :D

general comment:

I havent used 8, but it seems to me there's a share of reaction against it because of the [very understandable] fear that MS might be planning to abandon the desktop. This is not helped by them trying -to a certain extent at any rate- to force the (non)Metro interface on us. Of course this could be them just trying to familiarise us with it so we're open to buying xyz with Windows 8 (or something similar) on it. As a corporation, I know MS dont care about the desktop, but business wont tolerate it's disappearance so I feel reasonably secure -
but not rock solid :-\

On windows 7, the setting says "(Classic theme only)" at the end there
-
your screenshot above says:
"(Classic folders only)".

Just wanted to note that this works even though I'm *not* using classic theme (I'm using Aero).

I dont know did it complicate things, but (I think) I was doing something wrong all along :-[
I was right-clicking in the Address field of save/open dialogue - it works now though, even if I do that.

Might as well try 64 bit compiled.

Sorry Miles :(
similar problem:

---------------------------
Error:  0x8000FFFF - Catastrophic failure

Specifically: hwnd

   Line#
--->   152: if (Item.hwnd = _hwnd)

Continue running the script?
---------------------------

I've actually got a copy of Listary (not-yet-installed) which does this - so dont go to any trouble for me - but I will be happy to test it (or give you more info) if you want to sort it out :)

this sounds intresting

I tried it with Win7 64bit and got this response:

Continue running the script?

This is now a bit off-topic, but I will release that part of code on CodeProject (unfortunately even that ready made solution took like week or more to make it really work)... if it is of use for anyone here :)

I'd recommend again -as per my post above- make a post in the "Announce your Software" section (the post was # 473 in this thread).
Give the details there and link from here to it. (FWIW I had a look @ the purchase page, it was displaying Paypal logos, but didnt offer me paypal - it did offer me lots of other options though. [I went to second page - my location is Germany])

I've never bought an ebook so have no idea how amazon deal with that.
With mp3s, they're very restrictive with the different markets.

It could be a case of mistaken identity (or maybe the woman did do something terrible in Amazon's eyes at some stage). But they really give the impression that they've thrown away the key.

I wonder are they afraid to be specific in their accusation because they would then have the onus of proof.

But the approach is appalling - they dont even give the impression of double checking their 'facts'.
