Living Room / Re: B drive
« Last post by app103 on August 04, 2006, 03:23 PM »
I had a B drive on my P3 for a short time.

I had borrowed my father's external USB Super Floppy drive.

That letter is reserved, just like A, for floppy drives.

When JacobB originally made the coding snack request, he did request that it not restrict what you can do with your computer.

And when I think about this, it was a good idea not to restrict.

If I planned on using my browser on my breaks, it would be bad to restrict using it, if I also need it for work.

thank you for the offer, app.

if you feel it is something that is worthy of your time then it will be appreciated. i would wait until we have a bit more interest in the project before committing yourself to coding for it as it's all a bit up in the air as to what will be required.

I wasn't exactly offering to code it...it's not something I think I can do yet.
5454
So app, are you agreeing that Jeff is full of it?  His claim is that using the software is the best kind of payment.

I sure am glad I am not his wife, with the way he shows gratitude.   :P

I don't think this is something you'd want to use for every app - after all that's what a task bar is far - but it *could* be handy for creating custom "groups" of apps, if you want, sort of like custom desktops (except I find those more cumbersome than I'm imagining this to be). This would be similar to XP's default "group similar taskbar items" I suppose, except I hate that. This would at least be customizable - only the apps you chose would end up in a given container. So for example let's say I'm working on coding a web page. I have my design app open (Nvu), 3 or more browsers for testing (Firefox, Opera, IE), a graphics app for doing my web images (ImageReady perhaps), and at least one and probably several folders open for quick file access. Now I also have my email app, Winamp, IM client (with multiple chat windows - could be tabbed, but I prefer not), 2 VNC windows, and a Word file open. A good half of the icons on my taskbar could be "collapsed" into one with a system like that suggested. It would be my "web design workspace" so to speak.

That is precisely what I had in mind.

I'd love to have all my chat clients in one window (ares/irc/mx),
web design project in another (PSP, browsers, folders, notepad2, etc),
browser windows in another (I have an odd way of utilizing tabs...all related pages are in one window...but I have multiple instances open with different subjects in each: 1 for email, 1 dc forum, one for the current topic I am researching, etc)

You should see what a disorganized mess of taskbar buttons I have when I am really busy multitasking.

It gets worse when stuff likes to minimize to the tray like the chat clients do...I start to forget which I have open.

A long time ago (2001) there was a browser called Crystalport AppCapture 5.1 that allowed you to do exactly what I described. Unfortunately the company that released it disappeared and you can no longer purchase a full version, nor are there any updates/upgrades/tech support any more.  And I can't seem to get that version to run on my PC. I can only seem to get the older version without the AppCapture, that I paid for, to work. (4.6.5 standard)

I am almost out of paper cases for cd's and was just about to order some more.

Thanks!

This sounded like a great idea when I was thinking it up...maybe it really isn't. (I don't know)

Imagine if you had an application where you could open other applications with it and they all be tabbed like browser windows are in some popular browsers, like firefox.

So that way I could have a tab for my IRC client, a tab for my browser, a tab for my rss reader, a tab for notepad, a tab for a game, a tab for some MS Office application, a tab for just about anything I would want to run...all in one window.

It would have a button that would open a dialog to browse for the .exe file.

It would keep a sorted list of used applications or maybe have a way to add favorite programs to a menu to make them easier to run next time.

And a feature where you could drag a tab to reposition it to change the order.

Not sure if this qualifies as a coding snack or if it would be too complicated.

Either way, it's something I would love to have.

If I can figure out how to do it (not sure my skills are up to that yet) I might be able to make a special DC edition of my ToDo List program.

Maybe add a feature that it will score you 1 point and send in the info, every time you move something from the ToDo side to the Done side.

But if you wait for me to figure out how, it might be awhile. I have never made anything that connects to the internet other than a few things with IE based browser objects.

I have a project on the back burner right now because all attempts to make it work properly have failed. It is supposed to fetch a few text files from the internet. It has some serious bugs. I just don't have the understanding & skills needed to make internet enabled applications work yet.  :(

I might be able to talk to a friend of mine and see if she would be willing to add to my code and do it. I would probably have to drag her here or to the irc channel to talk to mouser about it ...if she agrees to do it.

Or I would be willing to share the source with another Delphi programmer here, if they want to do it.

Or I could convert it to a BCB 6 project for someone, if needed.

Just a thought.

General Software Discussion / Re: Situation re: unsupported software
« Last post by app103 on August 03, 2006, 05:07 AM »
There have even been cases of companies buying other software projects just to kill them.

AOL bought the rights to the DeadAIM plugin, just to kill it and guarantee there will be no future versions of it. It was a business deal that just made sense to them. They have that right...they own it now. (unfortunate for the people that already paid for DeadAIM)

Abandonware is not public domain...the original license agreement is still in effect.

At any point in time the company that holds the copyright can choose to release a new version. You never know. All you can do is hope they do...or cry if they don't.

Some of my favorite software is abandonware. For example...Claris Easy Business Cards. It was such a good product that I wish I could tell people to try it...but you can't get it any more. Apple decided not to continue development on it. I consider my copy to be priceless. I do not look forward to the day that there is a version of Windows that it will not work with or the day I can no longer buy blank sheets compatible with it. That will be a day I will cry.  :(

Open source has nothing to do with the price of the software...it only has to do with the source code of that software.

Many confuse the term "open source" to mean freeware.

It's not. It's software in which you are entitled to the source code, entitled to change that source, and entitled to redistribute that software, providing you give the source to those that receive it.

Nowhere in there does it say that the programmers should starve themselves while coding it and nowhere does it say they have to give their work away for free.

Why do people get confused and think that open source software is a type of freeware? Because many open source projects are freeware/donationware.

But not all are free. There are some where you only receive the source once you buy the product. And this is OK, and it's still in the spirit of true open source software. And those projects are the ones most likely to survive because they force you to give back something.

In the true spirit of open source is a concept of sharing. In any sharing relationship, it won't last if one does all the giving and the other does all the taking and giving nothing back. It leaves the first party feeling unappreciated, taken advantage of, and totally drained.

If someone shares with you, etiquette says you should share something back with the giver...become a giver yourself. Etiquette says you ARE obligated. Everything has a price...no exceptions.

There is no such thing as a 'free lunch'. At the very least you should 'kiss the cook'.

Even if you are broke, you can share something in return for what was shared with you. It is the only right thing to do. Think about it for awhile and I am sure you can come up with an idea or two on how to do this.

And if the software is making you money, you better damn well share the wealth with the reason why you are making money. Otherwise you are not only being a stingy miser, you are exploiting people for your own personal gain. (There is a name for people like that but I won't say it because this is supposed to be a family friendly forum.)

If everyone that uses free open source software actually gave something back to these projects then the quality would rival or even exceed the payware versions of similar products and we would all come out as winners...the developers and consumers alike.

It is up to you, the user, to determine the best way to give back, and be generous about it, no matter what it is that you are giving. Try to give back equal to what you received.

If you love it, support it...it's that simple.

Takers may eat better...but givers sleep better.

I could suggest trying a different server...or a different IRC client (there are quite a few free ones)

And check your firewall logs for any kind of blocking related to the IP of the server you connect to.

See if that makes any difference.

If that is an arm sticking up, with a sneaker on the hand, that person has some REALLY long arms.

But that idea has inspired my daughter to play around and maybe take some pics of her friends doing weird stuff like this.

It would be some excellent photography practice for her.

If she does any, I'll ask her if I can post some of her pics here.

eww...how gross!

I guess I am not much for frozen Kool-Aid.

I prefer frozen bananas on a stick,  dipped in magic shell...or frozen pureed fruit of any kind, on a stick.

Instead of buying that crap I usually make my own. Tastes better and is much healthier for you.

Post New Requests Here / DONE: (10+2)*5 Timer
« Last post by app103 on July 31, 2006, 03:52 AM »
This will time your work/break cycles, reminding you when to work and when to take a break.

The defaults are 10 minutes of work, 2 minutes of break, and this is repeated 5 times for a total of 1 hour.

These values can be changed to suit your needs. The program will remember the values you used during your last session.

Start by entering in the values you desire:

  • The first box is for how long you want to work
  • The second box is for how long you want your breaks.
  • The third box is for how many times you want to repeat this cycle.

Click Apply to set the new values.

Click Work to begin.

In the statusbar you can see where in your work cycle you are, followed by how long you have worked this session, followed by how long you have worked since you started using Instant Boss.

Instant Boss will tell you when it is time to take a break. You will have the choice to keep working a little longer, take your break now, or skip your break and begin next work period.

  • If you decide to keep working, it will count up and add this to your total work time. You can then decide when to take a break by clicking the take a break button.
  • If you decide to skip your break, it will begin the next word period in the cycle.
  • If you decide to take a break now, it will begin your break period.

At the end of your break period, you will be told to get back to work and offered a few choices.

  • If you decide to work, the work timer will begin.
  • If you decide to take a longer break, it will extend your break by 50%, and remind you again when your time is up, to get back to work.
  • If you click cancel, you will have to start work manually by clicking the work button again.

There is a pause button in case you are interrupted by phone calls or other things that need your attention. This can be used during both work or break periods.

The reset button...use with caution. This will stop all timers and reset everything to default values of 10-2-5 so that you may begin again. It will not reset how long you have worked today, nor the total time you have worked since you started using the Instant Boss program.

Clicking the X to close the program will result in it being minimized to the system tray. The only way to exit is through the right click menu on the tray icon. All of the button options also appear on that menu.

For power users, there are command line parameters you can use to preset the values when you run Instant Boss.

Example:

"C:\Program Files\Instant Boss\InstantBoss.exe" 60 15 3
(there is a space after the last quote and a space between each number)

You can either use this from the Windows Run dialog or use it as shortcut targets. The numbers correspond with work-break-repeat, in that order. Please use only numbers, no letters.

more to include:

  • supported OS's
  • test OS (the one you tested it on)
  • RAM usage
  • License type (shareware, freeware, donationware, open source)

Living Room / Re: Free Hosted Public Forums - very interesting service
« Last post by app103 on July 30, 2006, 03:35 AM »
There is one very big concern about free forum hosting:

your data

Most do not allow you to back it up yourself and have a copy of it...meaning if for any reason they decide to delete it, all the posts are gone forever. Or if you decide to move your forum off their site, you can't take your database with you.

And you can't tweak it any farther than editing the html/css in the template to alter it's look, and from what I have seen at Nabble, they don't even allow you to do that.

If you are looking for free Invision Power Board hosting, Forumer.com might be an option to consider. But like I said...they own your database and you will never get a copy of it. But at least they let you personalize the look. (they also slap google ads on it)

This was my forum hosted by Forumer for my chatroom before it's demise. (I never even got to finish tweaking the template  :()

And this is what the basic untweaked forum looks like.

For those of you that have taken advantage of this offer, you can't use the instructions in the email they sent you, once you have that key.

It says to double click the key file but that will result in this error:

http://img96.imageshack.us/img96/6870/rarkeyxj4.jpg

What you have to do is make sure you have version 3.51 installed and open it. then drag that key file into it and you are done.

The email gave bad installing info.
