How about a section of the GUI where a link to donate and a message will appear.

Maybe first time they run the application it can be a message explaining the concept of donationware.

Next time they run it, a counter will appear in that section telling them how many times they have run it.

After 30 uses, a new message will appear asking them how much they think the application is worth.

After 50 uses it can suggest that they must like the software to have used it 50 times.

...And so on.

And change the color of the messages each time...and maybe a small graphic that changes too.

Once they donate, the message section can either be completely removed, or a random thank you message can load there every time they use it. Things like "thanks for putting food on my table", "thanks for helping me pay off my student loans", "thanks for helping me get DSL", etc....and maybe inspiring messages related to generosity that give people a warm feeling inside....something like "Takers may eat better but givers sleep better...thanks for being a giver."

Keep it small enough to not be all that annoying, but visible enough to be a reminder...and since it is constantly changing, it will be more noticeable.

People tend to become blind to things that stay the same all the time, which is why a nag every time they open a program that requires them to click OK doesn't work...it's always the same nag. They read it once and never read it again...they just close it.

I know this from first hand experience with a calculator program that I love and have used for quite a few years and would gladly pay for if I could only find the developer. The nag screen has a dead AOL email address to contact for more info about purchasing a copy without the nag, which comes with the source for the program too.

Unfortunately, the email address was already dead when I downloaded it from the AOL download center. So I am used to clicking OK when I use it.

Top half is today's mess and my taskbar. (I could make a guessing game out of naming what all the icons are for, in order, and give out a prize to whoever gets the most right?)  ;D

Bottom half is with everything minimized. Taskbar is on autohide.

I found a few more international AOL music video pages:

and in other cat related music video discoveries, I found this one on the AOL Canada site:

For you to rip content for your own personal use is one thing...

For one of us to do it for you would be illegal.

Have you tried to access the AOL videos through http://music.aol.co.uk/videos ?

If that doesn't work, you can wait till next month when AOL goes totally free, you can try accessing it directly through the AOL software. Maybe you will have better luck with it then.

General Software Discussion / Re: good software review site

This page really bothered me:

http://anti-spyware-...yware-downloads.html

Besides bashing Spybot and all freeware in general and practically calling it all crap just because it's free, there was other gems like this:

The Price of Freeware

Everyone has to make a buck, even freeware programmers. And who can blame them? Programming is time-consuming work worthy of compensation, and they have hosting costs to cover too.

Say you happen upon free anti-spyware and you’ve determined that the software is legitimate. You decide to download. With the download, the freeware programmers will—without fail—request a voluntary donation from you to keep their freeware “free.”

Once you make a donation, the software is no longer free. You’ve simply paid money for freeware. You could spend a similar amount on commercial anti-spyware to receive more for your money.

I found Meez a few weeks ago. It's kind of cool, but very buggy.

If you like this kind of thing, eLouai has tons of stuff similar to this that will keep you busy for ages. None of it is 3D, but you can make people, houses, rooms, smileys, etc.

(and they give you bbcode for some items!)

I do x-stitch...but I have always charted my patterns by hand with sketches, graph paper and a light table. (takes at least 10 hrs of work to make a pattern)

I also do beadwork, which some x-stitch patterns can be adapted for that, depending on the pattern and the style of beadwork I am doing.

I have tried various programs for it but never really liked the patterns it generated. They either required you to spend a small fortune on a zillion thread colors, used rare colors that were more expensive and harder to find, or were 50% half-stitches. (I hate half-stitches!) And none of them ever included backstitching definition.

I'll try the trial version of Pattern Maker and let you know if I like it.

This hangs on the wall of where my husband used to work. People have commented that I made it look a lot like my husband.  :D

I have found these 2:

Wallpaper Master - the Pro version isn't free ($18), but that's the one that supports dual monitor.

Ultramon ($39.95) - lots of multi-monitor tools. There are wallpaper related scripts available for it.

Of course we can't be all nice all the time, so here is a different page that makes fun of all the mathematically "challenged" out there. Please don't be too offended though.

I mean while their solutions would seem painfully wrong, they did follow certain rules to arrive at the solution. The rules applied weren't the ones taught so the result was wrong, but I think some of these folks should get credit for consistency or at least creativity:
six = 6

I am not offended. But I think maybe now that you are done having fun and laughing at us, it's time to learn a little about what makes us tick.

http://www.dyscalculia.org/thesis.html

It's not easy for some of us, and you wouldn't believe how many common everyday things take a math ability to do.

Some of us struggle everyday to do the things you take for granted.  :(

Some of us are having our dreams crushed by something others find simple to understand.

Unless it can be specifically geared towards something programming related with graphics, to me it would seem to be out of place....

About as out of place as adding crochet lessons. (even though reading/writting some types of patterns can be like asm code)

btw...if you add crochet, that section is MINE!   ;D

Newer versions of Paintshop Pro (v8+) have a background eraser tool that can make it much easier to cut out what you want from the background.

You can change the background to another color first, then select the background with the magic wand, then invert selection, then crop or whatever.

If you like the results and can figure out a way to get consistent results with it, you can create a python script to automate it and run it from within PSP.

I would give you screenshots of it in action but my trial of PSP 9 expired a long time ago.

There are some very beautiful dual monitor wallpapers around, that you use just like a normal one (bigger size just for dual monitors).

You don't need any special software to use ones like these:

http://www.digitalbl...es/dualscreen1.shtml (these are not free though)

You can find plenty of free ones the same size with a proper google image search:

Developer's Corner / Re: Turbo C and Turbo Pascal are back!!
« Last post by app103 on August 09, 2006, 08:16 AM »
Looking at what they are offering with Turbo Delphi Explorer and comparing it to Delphi 6/7 Personal, here are the major similarities and differences that I can see, so far:

Available
as a free
download
Write
Database
Applications
Install
3rd Party VCL
Into IDE
Delphi 6/7 Personal
Yes
No
Yes
Turbo Delphi Explorer
Yes
Yes
No

So in one way you get more with the new Turbo Delphi Explorer (database programming) and in one way you get less (can't install 3rd party VCL).

The comparison is the same between C++ Builder 6 Personal and the new Turbo C++ Explorer.

I also found this:
Note, though, that you can only install one of the four product types on a given machine; if you need to use multiple languages, Borland figures you're a candidate for the higher-end Borland Developer Studio product.

So you can't install Turbo Delphi and Turbo Delphi for .NET...only one or the other. You will have to choose.

If you don't plan on doing any database programming, or if you want both Delphi & C++,  I would go get the free download of the older personal editions now, while you still can.

C++ Builder 6 Personal (as part of a free Symbian SDK) - Just click "I agree" and it's yours...no registering needed, comes with the update. You CAN just install C++ Builder without installing the Nokia SDK.

Delphi 6 Personal - You will have to register on the Borland site for a free key, and you CAN get updates for it.
Delphi 7 Personal - You will have to register on the Borland site for a free key, and you are NOT entitled to any updates.

I have looked at Workrave before. (I think it was db that told me about it, about a week ago.)

I have also taken a look at WorkPace, another RSI prevention tool.

While RSI prevention tools do seem to have something in common with Instant Boss, at first, there is a big difference between the 2:

  • RSI prevention tools try to get you to work less and take more breaks. (great for the workaholic that works to the point of it being unhealthy)
  • Instant Boss tries to get you to work more and rewards you with breaks. (great for the procrastinator that doesn't really want to work)

Now some of the charting & graphing features available for WorkPace may be able to be adapted for Instant Boss, while still maintaining it as an anti-procrastination tool. That is probably what I will go with.

I was also considering features that would make it good for the self employed that bill by the hour, allowing them to log how much work was done on a project, and to enter a rate of pay so that total billing cost can be calculated.

Living Room / Best of the Web...for the Average Joe
« Last post by app103 on August 07, 2006, 05:29 AM »
I am working on a little project...and you can help.

What I need is a collection of links representing the best sites you know of, that fit the following categories:

  • Forums (general interest...must be appealing to all types of people)
  • News (nothing too local)
  • Upload Services (things like yousendit.com and imageshack.us)
  • Tools (things like Babelfish)
  • Music (sites that have free streaming music or info on artists/albums)
  • Links (things like digg)
  • Games (things like pogo.com & neopets.com)
  • References (things like dictionary.com & wikipedia)
  • Blogs (general interest...not too techie)
  • Humor (family friendly and updated often with new content)
  • Security (good pc security sites for the average Joe)
  • Technology (you can get a bit more techie here)
  • Software (best download sites)
  • Kids (somewhere safe for children under 13)
  • Education (homework help sites covering a broad range of subjects)

Keep in mind that whatever links you submit have to appeal to the average person, be safe sites (no popups or spyware), family friendly, and not too technical.

Make sure you let me know what categories the sites fall into.

Everyone's goal in life should be to blur the line between work & play...and get paid for something they would do as a hobby.

If you love what you do, you never work a day in your life...it's all play.  :D
5446
Here is the one I use:  Panorama32

and if you are in need of some wallpapers, there are plenty on my art site:  RussoGraffix
5447
If it's going to be something small, you could go with this style of message board:  http://draconislabs.net:8080/forums/

No database needed...and if you want the source, just leave a message on that board and Krish will probably give you the source for it. He loves to share his code.  ;)

Tell him I sent you.

I was kind of looking for a new online home when I stumbled across this site back in January, while looking for a particular type of software.

It was serendipity.

Although I never quite found the program I was looking for, I found my new online home instead.

I have been here and very happy ever since.  :-*

There is something here for everybody.

Everyone here is friendly, intelligent, and not afraid to speak their minds. And we are all pretty free to do our own thing here, too. And we don't compete with each other. It's a breath of fresh air.

And mouser is a great leader...he somehow manages to make it all work well by pulling us all together as a team, while still allowing us to be us.

That's a great skill that I admire. (and one required by the leader of any place I would call my online home)
