I agree.  I have a good hard drive backup system in place.  But I'm also a pack rat, and I don't like to just delete anything, so just in case, I'll burn medium-level important stuff onto dvd's.  If they go bad, no big deal.

Superboyac - you live up to your screen name. I wish I could wade into the guts of programme as you have on this and other occasions and really wring them out. I install programmes and dabble - you OWN them. Awesome
Thanks for the words, Darwin!  Well, I don't do this with all programs, but I think SQLNotes is going to be really important in the future.  My thing is that I don't like to waste my life with needlessly repetitive tasks or things that take longer than they should.  So, computers are perfect for that.  They allow me to concentrate my time on things that really matter by doing all the dirty work for me.  SQLNotes is a great example of this.  I can have so much of my life's important information available with a click in this program.  That's going to be very useful.

Interesting, I didn't think about it that way.  It popped into my head because I was burning a bunch of my unused documents off of my computer, and I used 6 DVD discs, but if I had dual layer, it would have only taken 3 discs.

What about Blu-Ray and HD-DVD for storage?  Do you guys think those will take off.  I read that they'll be able to store around 50GB per disc.  Wow!  That would be amazing, especially if the price was reasonable.  Let's say I can get 4.7GB DVD discs right now for about $0.20-0.50 per disc.  I would definitely pay up to $5 per disc for 50GB.

Have fun Pierre, you deserve a break!

I can't help it, here are some topics for you when you get back:
What is the Scratch Pad for and does it function any differently from any other grid?
What is the timeframe for adding the import feature which will allow me to import grids from other SQLNotes databases into the current one.  I have some grids I work on at work, and I have some I work on at home.  Eventually, I'd like to combine them.

I don't ever remember the dual-layer DVD discs taking off, what happened to them?  They barely even sell them in the stores.  If you go to best buy, there may be one package of 5 discs somewhere along that entire shelf of recordable media.

OK, thanks.  By the way, if I rename the grid, does the field name (the field with the check box) for it get automatically updated also?
No. There is no connection between field name and grid name (this is by design)
Then, when I rename a grid, how do I know which checkbox is associated with that grid in cases where I want to include that grid's data into another grid?

Also, a weird thing has been happening with my HTML Pane content the last few days.  The text inside appears in random places.  Like, just now, I got the pane content I wrote in another grid show up in one of the items of my transcript grid.  Something is buggy about it.

I updated my SQL with the latest build, then I opened up my transcript grid and the information is not showing and I'm getting the following message:
Screenshot_20080116-091127.png

As far as I can tell, I have the correct filters and everything shown.  In fact, I didn't change anything from the last time I had it working, so I don't know what I did.
5386
That's weird.  The guys at work were able to do it on their computers.  I've googled it and all i came up with is the command you showed in the previous post.

1- Export to Excel works fine here. Writes to the same folder as the database, name=gridname.xls. We can examine why it doesn't work for you.
2- To print with the HTML pane info, best is to do a template based HTML export. See this link:
http://sqlnotes.wikispaces.com/Invoices
OK, the excel is working fine now.

I have to be honest, I'm not really able to follow that wiki article about the invoices.  For one thing, what is the fieldname for the HTML pane?  In the Word template, how do I make it automatically construct the item I have selected and automatically include the children?

Basically, here is what I want to do:  I want to create a generic export template where whatever I have selected in the grid of SQLNotes, the exported document will show that selected item and all of it's child items (properly indented) and also include any html pane text next to it.  SO, I just select an item, export it, and the whole outline is reconstructed in word.

By the way, I am getting the grey box bug that Armando was talking about earlier again.  it happens because my properties pane is on auto-hide, then when I mouse over to show it, and then it rolls back in, but the grey box still shows.
5388
OK thanks.  but how do I get it to replace the default one in my control panel?
5389
How do I get the more hardcore, Windows 2000-like version of the user accounts management in the control panel of Windows XP?  Here is the screenshot of what I want:
Screenshot_20080114-140346.png

The one on my home computer is the bubbly normal Windows XP version.  I don't like it.  Thanks.

Does the Excel export work yet?  I've tried it but it's not working for me.  Part of the problem may be that I don't have administrator access to my program files directory, so whatever file it's trying to create may be being prevented.

Also, as far as printing, is there a way to be more selective in the printing?  Like, I would like to print only selected items of a grid (with/without children items), along with their html panes.

I'm having some bugs with the html pane.  The problem with the enter key is still happening.  Also, I just entered something in the html pane, and the pane kind of froze, and the same content appeared when I clicked to other items.  Finally, I clicked to another grid and it went away.  Then, I came back to what I typed in the html pane before, and it wasn't there anymore.

[edit] After thinking about it, I could use the current item list as a datasource. I'll see how this could work [/edit]
Ah!  I see.  OK, if I am interpreting that correctly, you are working on how to do that and you will tell me later.  Great, I'll wait for it.  Thanks.

>Wouldn't it be better if i could take the columns from the existing transcript grid (including the parent items which do not have grades) and be able to use them in a pivot table?

Yes columns are no problem, the issue here is which items to take?
---------------

Unfortunately, this is rather complicated. The pivot needs a data source.

One possibility, would be to create a pivot based on the selected items, however it would be complicated when users add items.

Another possibility would be to allow users to set the data source of the pivot (currently it is set automatically). I think that pivot table/chart views will help as far as this issue is concerned.

[edit] After thinking about it, I could use the current item list as a datasource. I'll see how this could work [/edit]
I don't see why it's a problem.  Let's take my transcript grid again.  Why can't the pivot table just read all of the Items regardless of their position in the hierarchy (without having to adjust the display of the grid using the menu-->grid options)?  Furthermore, for the items that have no grades associated with it (year, semester) all you have to do is uncheck the "blank" box in the screenshot I showed above.  I guess I'm not understanding why it can't work this way.

Does it have to flat for the pivots to read the information?
No it doesn't need to be flat. Some explanation is required here. Items exist independant of the Hierarchy. I like to say that items are like individuals. The fact that you have parents or children does not change the fact that you are a person. The same in SQLNotes. To determine what the pivot table of a specific grid can see in terms of items, set hierarchy, context parents and save item states to Off. Those items are the only ones which "belong" to the grid. The rest were added to help you manage your information.

Pivot table/chart views will be possible later on. Right now, you need to open the grid first. So setting a new grid source to CourseGrade will do 2 things for you:
1- get you the grade
2- isolate the actual courses from the summary parents (semester, year, etc)

I hope this helps.
OK, this works.  But if you don't mind, let me argue this from an efficiency standpoint.  I would rather not have to create a new grid just for a pivot table if I don't have to.  Wouldn't it be better if i could take the columns from the existing transcript grid (including the parent items which do not have grades) and be able to use them in a pivot table?  Because in MS pivot tables, you can turn certain items on/off, so if some data doesn't apply, you don't have to have it show in the table.
When I made my pivot table using the existing transcript grid, I didn't get any of the items listed in the list like would normally appear in a pivot table in excel (see below):
Screenshot_20080114-104704.png
That list should show a list of all the grades (A, A-, B+, etc...).  I'm just saying that it would be better and easier if I could create that pivot table without creating a new grid.  Sorry, what I meant was it would be easier if I didn't have to MODIFY the existing grid (because I can turn off the hierarchy, save states, context parents, like you said).

First of all, Armando!  Wow!  That is some posting.  Your points are right on, and I think my experiences have been very similar if not exactly the same.  I'll have to reread it 5 more times before I digest everything!  Actually, I think I should print it out!  I know I have experienced the grey box thing before, I just forgot to say anything.

Pierre, thanks for the pivot information, that helps.
Simply create a grid called CourseGrade (or something else and set the source to CourseGrade) and use that grid for your pivot table/chart (charts will look pretty neat for this transcript stuff)

There are other ways (i.e. modify the source of your original grid) but this way will work.
So, am I to understand that the pivot tables will not work when the list is structured as a hierarchy?  Does it have to flat for the pivots to read the information?

More for pivot tables:
Can I have the pivot tables auto-hide?  Can I have more than one open at once?  Can I save the pivot tables somehow?  When I close the pivot table after I had docked it horizontally split, when I reopen, it opens full-screen again.  Is there a way to save the last used setting?

Pivots are automatically saved. To see simultaneously, right-click on the tab and select new Hoz/Ver tab group
awesome!  OK, what if I close that pivot table.  How can I reopen it?

I was modifying the post above right when you responded, I don't know if you saw the last part.

bug alert:  If I press "Enter" in the HTML pane, nothing happens.  This was fine before.

OK, I'm starting to explore the pivot tables now:
--Is there a way to save a pivot table once it's made?  I don't see where it is stored once I make it and try to get it back later.  Also, it would be cool if I could view the pivot table in along with the grid simultaneously (maybe make it a pane like the fields and html pane).

--Also, I'm trying to make a pivot table that shows how many of each grade I got over the course of my years.  But because the grid is setup in a hierarchy, the children subitems don't seem to be counted.  How can I get the pivot table to read all the sub-items.  It works fine in flat outlines.

Well, the transcript grid is working properly now.  I used the method where I have a Pass/No Pass column because I wanted to keep track of how many units were Pass anyway.  So, now there is a template available for people who want to enter their transcripts into SQLNotes, which I think is useful.

I mean, do you guys see how powerful this program is?  It's like I'm creating my own mini-programs here.  I bet there is someone out there selling some kind of transcript software.

You are quite right that the user-code needs work:
1- Divide the code between:
  • a) system code (part of SQLNotes, updated)
  • b) user-code
  • c) database-specific code
2- Better code editor with syntax highlighting

This will be done before release 1.0. Idealy I'd like to do it as MS apps with a VBA editor, but it is likely an overkill and MS stopped licencing it (Thanks Bill )

There are plans to include the LUA language into SQLNotes which would allow more powerful code (VBScript is an out-of-process calculation engine and does not have access to the SQLNotes data, the LUA engine would be fully integrated) Version 2.0 perhaps.
That would be really cool.

minor bug report:  When you click on an item in the grid so that the cursor starts blinking to start typing, sometimes (not always) the cursor will be blinking one space in.  That is, a space is added to the beginning of the text even though no typing has begun.  Also, I know you can start typing immediately without clicking once inside first, but if my caps-lock is on and I start typing suddenly, the first letter is lower-case and then everything is upper-case.
