that now we have the Basement, and the sort of things/subjects that suit that place - about proposing another section called maybe the Attic (or Loft in American ?) where members could post threads about  :) Happy  :) things, stories or events, things that make you feel good, things that make the "World" a better place for everyone ... ???

That stuff is suitable for the Living Room, is it not?

Sounds to me like a tagging system would be the answer... (No comment on the amount of work/worth.)

One woman pulled a gun after someone tried to forcibly remove her meter and install a smart meter, even with clearly posted "no trespassing" and "no smart meter" signs:

http://www.activistp...y-against-smart.html

A Houston area homeowner, Thelma Taormina, was forced to defend her property and her constitutional rights when a utility worker bypassed her "No Trespassing and No Smart Meters" sign, then started a scuffle to install a Smart Meter.

If they're that eager to install them, and start trespassing and pushing homeowners, I really doubt that there's anything good going on...

Congratulations, U.K., on Bradley Wiggins' winning the Tour de France 2012, and, even over the hill, Christopher Froome being number 2! Fantastic! Does Brits think the Manx is part of England? If so, they must think Mark Cavendish made the British triumph total.

However, England has only lately taken interest in bicycling-racing, so...
forgive me for thinking it, and now even saying it out loud:
I smell a doped rat - and it is speaking English!

Kind of OT, but perhaps worth a laugh on the topic of cycling:

Thanks for finding that. My GF Alex took one look and...well...I get the feeling our AA battery budget is about to get shot to hell.
 ;D 8)
Yes, thanks for that @Renegade.
I almost wish you hadn't shown it to us. Fascinating and interesting. Fun!
Did you notice the other interesting video links associated with that video?
This one shows what looks like a more "elegant"(?) homopolar motor with NO wiring at all - just two bits of glass as a low-friction bearing, one magnet, and lots of stationary batteries of various types arranged in a circle.
I'm not sure I fully understand the physics of it. I have not assembled one, but I assume it's not a con.

There are a LOT of videos for similar homopolar motors, and I did see that one. I actually tried to replicate that one first, but couldn't manage to get it working. I tried that first because I didn't have any free copper wire, which I ended up cutting an old RCA cable for.

But, I only have AA and AAA batteries -- no 9V batteries. I'm not sure if that's important or not.

Incidentally, the link that 40hz gave above has a link to the same place where I bought my neodymium magnets from. But I think it's about time to buy some more. :D I'd like to fiddle around with some other kinds of motors. (I'll only be able to buy some of the smaller ones though, as larger ones are only shipped by ground, and they seem to be about 2x as expensive domestically.)

You had to show me that didn't you? Now I'm gonna have to build one. ;D

I built one today. Well, you can hardly call it building when it's so easy... Mine was just a very, very basic one. I don't have any thick copper wire, but I'm planning on buying some~! ;D

+1 for 4wd there.

That is the fastest and easiest way to do it. Nothing else will be significantly easier. (Also, regex is uber-cool and will give you god-like power. And all the cool kids are using it. You do want to be cool, right? -- Sorry -- I get all freaky weird around regex. They just drive me wild 'cause they're so awesome!) ;D

I'm also playing with renaming it from Soap Box, which sounds like it is practically begging people to get up on their box and scream, to the Basement, which does a bit more to convey the unusual nature of the area.

Basement is cute! But how about "The Dungeon"? ;D :P

Developer's Corner / Anyone Here Do Embedded Systems or Microcontrollers?

I'm kind of wondering if anyone (or who) here does work on embedded system, microcontrollers, or is working with something like the Raspberry Pi. I've got mine coming in a month or 2, and kind of getting psyched about it. :D And my mind is wandering to other areas already.

LG sends all their reject to this part of the world.

Hope the following digression will be tolerated :)

I have started to suspect that some companies that distribute to multiple countries have measurements per-country (may be even more specific?) of what level of quality they can deliver to which country.  If you produce a lot of products and can measure such things, it seems like an obvious thing to at least consider.  (I was just chatting the other day with someone who hasn't had problems with HDDs for years, but has had awful experience with optical media, whereas, the reverse situation has been true for me for approximately the last decade.)

If any one has sources of information regarding this, please share.

(FWIW, my personal experience with the LG burner I got recently has been quite good so far.)

It is standard practice world-wide to do this in many industries, and particularly in agriculture and natural products, e.g. lumber, hides, etc. You'll often be in some market and see something stamped "Export" or "Export Quality". No concrete examples for you, but I'm sure a search would turn up more info quickly.

Living Room / Re: new DVD "M-Disc" perfect for archive material
« Last post by Renegade on July 20, 2012, 10:45 AM »
It's always a balance of needs and costs.

Given the super-cheapness of the M-Disc, and the long life, and the unlikelihood of the DVD/Blu-ray format dying in the next decade, it seems like a pretty good solution at the moment. Something better may come along, but until then, it looks reasonable.

I do share your hesitance when it comes to the proprietary nature... That's a bit tough to choke down, but really, most hardware is like that. It's really only software where you can get openness. That's changing, but...

+1

Works EXTREMELY well.

Also for any bulk file transfers in general, e.g. FTP. Each file has a certain amount of overhead.

HOWEVER... Most important thing... DO NOT USE COMPRESSION. Just archive the files with no compression as it will be MUCH faster.

Actually, that's not totally true.

Don't compress things like videos or images or music.

Do compress things like text files, html files, etc.

I alway worry about "single source" technology.

For backups and archives I prefer an industry standard technology - ideally an open sourced one just in case the original developer folds - or as is more common, gets bought out and is then pulled from the market.

True, but with M-Discs, you only lose the ability to write, not read, so that's a small consolation.

The thing is that spammers latch onto any possible source of content they can to make sites that they can have ads on. Download sites are a great way to spam.

But, there are some good ones. I wrote a quite review of Softoxi:

http://cynic.me/2011...ad-site-softoxi-com/

I was SHOCKED there. And I'm not the only one. Some other developer friends have commented to me about it.
