General Software Discussion / Re: Are you going to wait for Windows 9?
« Last post by tomos on November 21, 2012, 02:16 PM »
Okay, so how about comparing it to Win7 then? Are the "minor" annoyances you mention outweighed by some major benefit (for Win7 desktop users - or even XP users who may want to choose between Win7 and Win8)?

I cant say yet - I've only been messing around with it for a week - not using it that much.
I dont use 'the tiles' at all (I'm mostly not even online with the thing so most of those apps are useless to me).

Advantages for me:
I can easily change languages for the complete system.
AV works out of the box - there's been no nagging (some people might consider this a weakness e.g. for basic users)
Task Manager is more than enough for me - in win7 I use process explorer.

(Percieved or real) Disadvantages can mostly be overcome (see my Win8 Tips thread).

Otherwise I'd say it's very similar to Win 7. There's still going to be a learning curve though.
To be honest, if I had to get a new desktop right now, I'd go for windows 7.
But in a couple of months my answer would probably be different.

Thanks joiwind :)
looks nice for mouse use.
I'd be more of a keyboard person myself for most of those (well, in FF).

But horizontal scrolling is often a problem.

One app I use scrolls horizontally with Ctrl+Arrow keys - no matter what has focus. e.g. if I'm typing here in the reply-box, the arrow keys will only move the cursor. I wish something like that would be universally implemented by Windows...
(going a little off-topic :-\ )

Is win8 lighter and faster as for consuming resources?

it's hard to say here, I have 7 on an i5 desktop and 8 on a lower end laptop.
8 boots incredibly fast which is great on a laptop - but would make zero difference to me on the desktop...
I suspect if you google it, that someone has done a head to head comparision

N.A.N.Y. 2013 / Re: NANY 2013 PLEDGE - Contractor's Work Log
« Last post by tomos on November 21, 2012, 06:45 AM »
Next I get this:

Screenshot - 2012-11-21 , 13_33_40.png

(note icons/text a bit wonky top-left)

but things go pear shaped here :-(
when I click on 'Clock on' for one of the logs, a small IE window opens - it is not resizeable so all I can see is this.

Screenshot - 2012-11-21 , 13_34_52.png

then I notice that one of my logs is marked 'in progress' (you can also see this in first image) - I dont see any way of stopping it. Clicking on the icon doesnt change anything.
I close the GUI and look online - it's the same. Refresh doesnt change anything so I dont think it is really in progress. [false suppostition there as it doesnt reflect time change till stopped - see edit below]

Screenshot - 2012-11-21 , 13_40_17.png

clicking on Clock-in for the other log works online.

I better do some actual work now for a bit ;-)
I can test again later to see if I can reproduce all this

EDIT/ the 'in progress' log was running since last night.
I clicked online on the icon and the popup showed it as running (this had not worked in the GUI).
I always turn off my computer at nights but somehow it kept going. (I dont remember starting it, but must have by mistake when testing.)

After I add my login details to preferences, this is what I see on start up:

(should it not log me in automatically?)

I removed older version and started afresh.

Script error is gone

initial "cant find file" error still there.

I dont see the new design at all (with the previous version I only saw the image after adding login details manually to the ini file).

thanks erikts -
I presume that's valid for all software used on 8 so I struck a line through Metro :-)

Stay with Windows 7 :P :D
I dont see any reason to remove "it" (what exactly do you mean by "it" btw?) - doesnt slow anything down (here).

Here's some tips about avoiding the tiles:

Tweaks:

Boot to desktop:
Go to the start screen and type in "schedule" to search for Schedule Task in Settings. Click on Task Scheduler Library to the left, and select Create Task. Name your task something like "Boot to desktop." Now select the Triggers tab, choose New, and use the drop-down box to select starting the task "At log on." Click OK and go to the Actions tab, choose New, and enter "explorer" for the Program/Script value. Press OK, save the task, and restart to test it out!

the winaero site has a bunch of apps that can remove or limit the Metro experience - I have not tried any of them.

The new UI side of Win8 is aimed at tablets and as such should, I think, be compared with whatever it is they have on iPads and the relevant Androids. That's a world I know nothing about so I cant comment.

I'm only using the desktop in Win8 - you do get thrown into the Tiled world occasionally but it's not a big deal I find. I suspect that's simply their way of doing a bit of advertising/exposure. The boot to 'home screen' is annoying but I'm presuming they'll allow us adjust that with SP1.
The implementation is uneven at times - a universal shortcut will work in one world but not in the other.

General Software Discussion / Re: Keyboard shortcut of the day
« Last post by tomos on November 21, 2012, 04:23 AM »
Me neither - that's a great one.
I was always very impressed by how in the early days of desktop, everything would be done with shortcuts/keyboard. (I know they had no choice.)

These related ones are probably known by everyone:
Ctrl+Arrow to skip back forward one or more words in direction of the arrow
Ctrl+Shift+Arrow to select one or more words in direction of the arrow
Ctrl+Home or +End to move cursor to beginning or end of text.
Ctrl+Shift+Home or +End to select text between cursor and the beginning or the end of text.

When I look in settings, my name and password are already saved (I didnt add them there manually - maybe they were picked up from the ini file).

I'm using IE8 still ... but I do have an idea what might be causing the focus problem (will test tomorrow without the possibly-suspect app).

Sounds interesting.
I think I understand the practical aspects but I'm not sure about the actual gifts -
does it have to be a "white elephant" :-)

Would it mainly be games or software?

Nice idea :-*

What is the story with software - is it okay to simply pass that on if it's not being used?
What's the story if your name is required for regristration - is it then simply a case of am I comfortable with this - or does it actually depend on the software's license (whether it's okay).

I was going through my 2011 accounts last week and there were quite a few (relatively small) purchases that were never installed...

So, would you say you're happy enough with it Miles?

Waterfox seems fine. I only use chromium as secondary now. I added StopAutoplay and AutoFillForms. AFF isn't as good as the chromium form filler. But it's ok.

Thanks, I'll give it a go

Re the script error -
I get that every time I click on 'Start'.
I also get it when starting using hotkey, or starting via tray icon context menu.

Dont know what else to say about it, so if you have any questions or suggestions, fire away :-)

Hi Jim

I dont think the first error is permissions - I have it in
C:\Portable\WorkLogGui
got the same error from
F:\Temp\WorkLogGui
(I also tried it with the "_0887" at the end of the folder name with no difference.)

Should the ini file store my username and password? It doesnt automatically.
I added them manually - now I get the screen like first image in OP, but I'm not logged in nor are my details aren't filled in.

Before that I didnt get any image - just the two fields and a login button.

It's nice and minimal and it does what it promises - I'll stick with this now

Re the actual GUI - the icons are too small here. I think this screen is 92 dpi - it's not a high resolution monitor anyway which means that others will see them even smaller.

There is no option to minimise, the app is always on top. [The transparency looks good ]
I can see why you might do it like that but I'm not sure I like it.

If we could minimise it to just the titlebar would be better -
that shows the time done, maybe adding the job-name to it would be nice.

EDIT/ I guess I can do that by reducing the windows size - would be more impressive/professional looking though if it worked via the usual minimise button in the titlebar (imo)

EDIT2/ I was so busy with what all was going on, I forgot to check out the tray icon :-[ :D
I see I can minimise to tray. I just activated some other properties there - looking good

When I click stop (and add comment) the GUI reverts to showing 'Start' but does not reflect the work just done in the time/cost shown.
When I click Start again - it then shows the work that was done in the previous stint.
