Living Room / Re: YouTube finally forces creation of google+ A/C to comment

So where you're using Google, it's because, in one way or another, you believe they've got a superior product.

Wrong answer.

At one time gmail was superior.  Now, not so much.  But when all of your data is with a service, it's hard to change.  Especially when its compatible with work, because they've bought into the google platform.  Youtube?  It wasn't google... now it is.  Same with several other services.

Basically, google has done a lot of what Microsoft did.  They were just more subtle and were able to ride the anti-microsoft side of the wave.

General Software Discussion / Re: NLB and Load Balancing
« Last post by wraith808 on November 14, 2013, 12:09 PM »
Basically, we have internal services that are being accessed from client machines, whether they be true clients, or loaders of information from external sources.  In order to increase our ability to handle the throughput from the clients, they are going to farm servers.

These services fall into four categories:
- WCF WF4 services
- DCOM components (that might or might not be enlisted in DTC transactions)
- Appian process endpoints
- ASP/ASP.NET services

From what little I understand, there's no central pooling mechanism- it's sort of peer other than the one specialized switch?  As I'm working from the development side, I'm most concerned about troubleshooting (especially in the case it is an intermittent problem which could indicate a problem with one of the nodes) and deployment and testing.

I feel a little better based on the last 5 minutes of the presentation, even though he didn't go into enough detail on that part, which had to do with gracefully removing a server from the pool and direct connection capabilities to a single server.  But in all reality, it was very overwhelming, especially as this isn't something that I'm going to be directly involved with on a day-to-day basis to bridge the receiving of the information to practical use.

Has anyone had any experience with NLB?  Just wanted an overview from someone that I trust about what my NOC is getting me into.

(And the presentation is really boring and is an overwhelming amount of information to be handled in an hour presentation)

Quietly reminding certain IT managers that they are there to do what best serves the company and meets the needs of the users is what it's all about.

He "won't allow" something? Lets get real, Napolean...IT works for the organization. Not the other way around. Software decisions are a management not an IT call.
 ;)

Actually, it's both, truth be told.  But they should work hand in hand and not be based on hidebound mentalities on either side.  That's why you have a review board in the best cases rather than a single individual.  And it's not just about which one you like, but compelling business need.

^ very good points for getting any sort of software into an organization.  Also not bringing it up for the first time in a meeting, but getting buy in from IT into the process through backchannels (dropping by and having conversations about X, etc) helps also.

http://www.OpenSource.org is a good site in general on the whole topic of open source, but specifically:

http://opensource.or...docs/peru_and_ms.php

The government of Peru addresses a lot of the arguments other than security that are sure to come up, and from a state sponsored perspective.

Most musicians adapt fairly rapidly to new instrument interfaces - as long as they're logical and consistent in operation.

I would amend that to say "Most younger/incredibly creative musicians..." as, believe it or not though I'm sure you're aware, musicians can be a downright stodgy bunch when something newfangled comes along that "all the kids are using" even when it's "logical and consistent" (yours truly guilty as charged).  ;)

Darn kids, always changing the game before I'm done playing...  >:(

I'd agree totally.  I just don't have the coordination to use some of these interfaces.

When I say tools as opposed to end-user type things, I mean concepts, ideas.  His was a concept.  Though you might consider some applications 'tools' from their use, they aren't tools in the way that a framework, or openmenu, or mouser's new mewlo project.

^ I don't think that NANY is enough to give something like that traction.  *You* have to use it and evangelize it and be interested in it, from what I've seen.

Look at the OpenMenu NANY entry.  It took a while for it to gain traction, but it has, and I see it being used in places.

The short- end-user software gets immediate results; tools and concepts need evangelization.

But I will agree with you on the support.

N.A.N.Y. 2014 / NANY 2014 Release: Reference Overlay Tool
« Last post by wraith808 on November 10, 2013, 10:35 PM »
NANY 2014 Release Information

Application NameReference Overlay Tool
Short DescriptionOverlay the Desktop with Reference Information
Supported OSesWindows XP/7 (Should work in Vista/8 also, but untested)
Web Pagehttp://thinkshui.net...erence-overlay-tool/
Setup FilePortable
DescriptionI use my Logitech G13 for my game controller, and it has a pretty cool configuration utility that shows you the keys and allows you to map your controls.  I was using it for a reference for a while.  Then I purchased more Logitech peripherals, and they worked great with the utility, other than the fact that my mouse is wired/wireless, and whenever I plugged/unplugged it, the stupid app would automatically switch to the mouse- very inconvenient if I do this in a game.  Also, having the ability to bring it up as an overlay would have been nice.

Enter the Reference Overlay Tool.  It does one simple thing- points to a directory of images, and displays them in a transparent window.
FeaturesImplemented
  • Displays images from a directory (PNG only currently)
  • Allows the user to move back and forth through the images
  • Allows the user to specify whether the images are stretched to the size of the window or not
  • Save settings
  • Allow user to change the opacity

Planned
  • Allow the user to specify whether the window should always be on top or not
  • Look into supporting other image types

StackOverflow

Saved my bacon more than a few times with strangeness in development.

StackExchange

There's a whole wealth of information on a whole host of subjects on stack exchange, and experts (and not) of all stripes willing to answer questions.

Yeah... that was going to be my second option, but I wanted to get a word back from you first.

Thanks for the info... now off to make something!  (Between NANY/NaNoWriMo/NaGaDeMon I'm going to be busy the next couple of months...)

Too bad we don't have any sideways thumbs just for SB :)
5320
The one that's being offered doesn't have any of that in it- it's teen because of the violence, but I guess I didn't play the middle 'edgy' ones; this was supposed to be a change back to that one that you finished, as it's in the interim between that and the second one, but with a more modern engine.  I think that they did get feedback with the way that the series was going, and decided to go back to that era after the first reboot.

The one thing that they seem to have done away with that made me originally get it on the 360 was that it was one of the first to use that ubisoft drm that required you to be online.  But that seems to be gone now, thankfully.
5321
The only problem with that is that I would have to make it a non-resident executable, which would slow down the processing of the file.  I'd like to either have an assembly that SSC could load and call a method that sends the filename to the assembly (sort of like FARR does with plugins) or have it communicate with an already extant instance of an application if I have to go the out of process way- perhaps across windows messaging or some other mechanism.

I'll try the out of process bit... but I'd still like to know if there is a way to create plugins like with FARR.
5322
It's pretty good... the only PoP I ever finished, and I chronically don't finish any games.  It kept my attention, and while it could be difficult, it was never frustrating.
5323
My first question... is there an API for SSC?  What I was figuring so that I wouldn't reinvent the wheel is to intercept the saving part of SSC with a plugin that would take the screenshot and float it...  didn't know if that was possible, but it seems like that would be a good plugin.

Thoughts? (And let me know if I should PM these or make a different thread or how you would best like to handle the questions)
5324
so... unexpire it 4wd? :)

Maybe get Deo to check...

Thanks for posting that.  A lot of what was said was in the comments, but it was good of Levinson to comment.  It should also shut up the trolls who said that he should be sued for false advertising.
