Living Room / Re: Off-the-wall ideas for Christmas presents?
« Last post by tomos on November 24, 2012, 10:45 AM »
oups, I forgot about this thread :)

And I've told my family not to give me any presents, since I kinda think it's a stupid thing to do(*) - stop giving superfluous gifts to people who have most of the stuff they need - you can't afford giving me the things I'd want to buy for myself (and I'd be dumbstruck and embarrased if you did), I don't want token gifts, and I'd rather have you buy something nice for yourself or some people who actually need it.

that reminds me of getting a spray canister for vinegar one year - looked expensive too, but I was like WTF?!
I actually like cooking but have no idea -nor do I really want to know- what to use it for. Actually ended up finding a practical use for it - vinegar keeps martens (Steinmarder) from biting cables in the car engine. Eventually got a protective cover for the ones the martens favoured - the vinegar sprayer is probably still in the boot.

I'm getting very practical about presents - I mean I make requests. Generally for consumable things I either wouldnt normally buy (or not at all). There's a toothpaste I really like that's 4 euros - damned if I'm going to buy that for everyday, but if I get it as a present I'm happy as larry. Or something like pumpkin-seed oil.

During the power failure of Hurricane Sandy, I started a crochet project...slippers for my husband. He was complaining that his feet were cold while we were all playing board games.

They are of my own design and are a little sneaker-like, navy blue with white tongues and orange laces.

sound nice and colourful - 'groovy' came to mind ;-)

I accidentally came across this 2006 post in your (app's) blog today, makes for a nice read:
The perfect gift

good tips, thanks!

However, once the last result is selected, pressing the down arrow key doesn't move the focus back to the text edit field. [...]

Any reflections on this?

it would be nice if the down arrow showed any extra results -
e.g.
if I search for xx and it says 21 results, but is showing only nine,
PgDn will show all results - but only if I press it straight away.
If I e.g. use the up arrow key to get to result #9, I can no longer access the other 12 results -
that's when it would be nice to access those using the down arrow (or PgDn).

The two customers I was working with have used computers for a long time (but are 'normal' every day users and over the age of 18) and they are totally befuddled by all the flipping about on their brand new laptop, especially as it seems to happen when they least expect it.

By default, media files opened from the desktop - they open in the tiles world. I changed that straight away for images. For music I've just been using Trout (as in 7) no idea what the default handler is. I'm so used to never using the default (e.g. I've always avoided Windows media player, rarely if ever use explorer,) that I wouldnt know if it's better or worse that way.

True then, other stuff from the tiles open in the desktop.

It is helpful to remember that either side is one winkey away. Which is not an excuse for the confusion caused - there is something very schizophrenic about the completely different styles I find too.

Update: 23rd November:

Although the program mentioned in this review checks out as clean on all 40 of the scanners used by VirusTotal, a couple of users have now mentioned that they received unwanted popups after installing it.

Therefore, this article has now been withdrawn.

(I dont know whether those popup reports were in the comments.)

None of the keyboards I have boughten have had the "keyboard condom".  They came in a plastic bag.
likewise - in the eu.

Keeping in mind that I've never seen these covers, the idea of keeping the keyboard constantly covered sort of reminds me of keeping furniture in plastic. It's got it's advantages but I dont know could I live with it...

I read today that product key of pre-installed OEM Windows 8 is embedded in the BIOS.

:-\ that's a good reason to stick with windows 7

8) Thanks for the kind words guys.

Just thought I should mention...I didn't post this as a "Please feel sorry for me", rather "This is where I have been, and this is why" :)

Thought I should mention in-case anybody thinks otherwise hehe  :-*

in that case we take it all back :P

@cmpm -
the text isn't any smaller in the slim version (in my post above anyways)

FWIW, visually, slim is much nicer/neater looking. Just an opinion though ;)

I dont know will these even make it for Christmas, and I think they're too hipster for me (and I never wear shades anyway) but
they did inspire me to start this thread - I mean what a great idea  :)

Jeez, only read this now (had it opened a while).
Eh, it's nice to see you again Stephen, but I wish for you it was under better circumstances.
It probably sounds a bit lame, but I really hope things work out okay (things can always work out okay - sometimes you've got to add an eventually to that though...)

You could thin it down & reduce the width - would help when docking

(would need smaller icons)

As a side note, because Screenshot Captor will refuse to capture an image of the Quick Capture Bar, I had to use the new Easy Screencast Recorder tool to capture a movie of using it and extract the image above from that

that sounds convoluted - for you 8)

looks very nice

From the POV of a productive environment:
The desktop is pretty highly evolved. To be honest I see 'the tiles' as fluff really.
Maybe in time there will be software developed that will make it really useful in a productive environment, but I dont know that that's the plan even (?)

+1 MS has always gone out of it's way to allow backwards for legacy applications. Take DOS's legacy (CLI Only) interface, cmd.exe isn't exactly hard to find...and I seriously doubt it's going anywhere either.

Whilst Windows 7 and 8 include something that look and behaves like DOS it isn't really and I am not convinced you can really expect to effectively run DOS apps on newer machines. Backwards compatibility is being lost - trying running 16 bit windows apps.

still a very good record I'd say.
