September 2006 marks the 50th anniversary of the introduction of the world's first commercial hard drive - the 305 RAMAC Computer, with its 350 Disk Storage Unit - that was designed and built right here in what would eventually become Silicon Valley. The Disk Storage Unit was introduced on Sept. 4, 1956, and the 305 RAMAC Computer was introduced on Sept. 13, 1956.

You have been assigned to design Bill Gates bathroom. Naturally, cost is not a consideration. You may not speak to Bill.

I'd put Clippy in charge of the toilet paper.  :D

If you considering getting the tools necessary, just in case you, a neighbor, or friend might need some assistance getting into their place....don't.

Possession of those tools can be a crime in itself in some places.

And if you help a neighbor get into their place, and later that place gets robbed, you are most likely going to be suspect #1.

Living Room / Re: Is Cybersex Cheating?
« Last post by app103 on September 07, 2006, 01:32 PM »
I have been fighting with myself as to whether I wanted to add my 2 cents to this debate. I surely didn't want my post to be the first female point of view, because I felt it could possibly be misunderstood if I was the first female to respond.

I could write volumes on this subject, and maybe someday I might, but for now I will hand you this idea:

Sometimes cybersex isn't what you think. There are times when it's more art than anything else.

Would it be cheating if 2 artists got together and painted a picture of a couple engaged in a sex act? Of course not.

So if 2 creative people got together and co-authored an impromptu spontaneous work of erotic fantasy fiction through the use of chat, and did it for the sake of it being an artistic work of fiction, expressing their creativity without the thought of it being anything more than that, would it be cheating? (Yes, there are people that actually do this...usually in a public chatroom with an audience.)

They are no more cheating than an actor or actress is, during a steamy, love scene in an R rated movie. Or if a romance novel was written by 2 writers.

In a case like this, the parts they play are just that...performers...and authors...nothing more.

Things are not always what they would first appear to be. Each case is very individual and the answer unique to the situation.

Bottom line: Is cybersex cheating? Maybe. Maybe not.   :two:

General Software Discussion / Re: What to you think of RealPlayer?
« Last post by app103 on September 07, 2006, 12:59 PM »
I'll let you know if I hate it or like it once I get it to work.

So far, every PC I have ever tried it on, I couldn't get it to work.

Not on a P1 with Win98 or WinME, not on a P3 with WinME, and not on a P4 with XP.

Funny thing though...Real Alternative DOES work.

Wasn't PC World the same people that rated AOL the #1 worst technology product of all time? and wasn't zip drives on that list too? along with some other great things?

They totally lost their credibility with that ranking list, in my opinion.

The Getting Organized Experiment of 2006 / Re: New version of ToDoList released
« Last post by app103 on September 06, 2006, 01:08 AM »
Updated to v1.6:

New feature additions:

Global hotkey to add item:
  ctrl+shift+ins

command line parameter to open file
use .tdo file path as command line parameter

ability to print done list

ability to minimize to tray

tray icon:
single click = add new item
double click = show application window
right click = show popup menu

    menu options:
      show window
      add item
      save list
      save list as...
      print to do
      print done
      new list
      open list

And I am very aware that my program shares the name with another popular one. I think it is time for a name change to get rid of the confusion.

i've mentioned elsewhere on the forum that i've just read Mark Forster's book, Do It Tomorrow, and that he recommends using a closed 'will-do' list.
-nudone

Maybe I should consider changing the name to Will Do List? or Do It List? or 2bDone?

Let me know what you think.

Site/Forum Features / Re: A dilemna regarding affiliate fees
« Last post by app103 on September 06, 2006, 12:51 AM »
However, sometimes we get back a reply saying that the company is not willing to do this, for a variety of reasons (they arent technically able to set up such a thing, or they dont want to disadvantage other affiliates).
-mouser

That's not your problem, it's theirs. You shouldn't have to make drastic changes to things to make them more money. With the way this site is growing, there is a good possibility that they may change their minds some day and change things on their end and be more agreeable.

Until then, the more agreeable companies will have an advantage over them.

This is a 2 way street here. You are not just obtaining discounts and deals for members...you are helping software companies make money, too, even if that isn't really your goal or intent.

And I agree with Darwin. This could cloud the idea of this site providing objective reviews and make us look like another Top Ten Reviews type site, which I am sure isn't what we want.

Developer's Corner / Re: Turbo C and Turbo Pascal are back!!
« Last post by app103 on September 06, 2006, 12:47 AM »

I am not quite sure why you need to install .Net for the non-.Net products though.

I think it might be that the IDE's themselves are written in either Delphi.net or C#, and that .net would be required to run the IDE, even though the software you create with it won't.

new? scary?

They have been giving away IDE's longer than Microsoft...and always making you jump through hoops by making you get an account, answer survey questions, wait for an email, confirm this, confirm that...then you get your key...and if you are lucky you might be able to find the software to use it with somewhere...maybe in Poland?

Ok, guys, here is my review of toDoList:
https://www.donation...57.msg35213#msg35213

Note the naming crash of this application and our very own app's tool also reviewed here at donation coder.

Yes, I noticed that.  :-[

Seems that one is pretty popular, and people have decided to refer to it as 'TDL'.

I think to lessen the confusion, maybe mine should be referred to as 'tdo', in lowercase because it's a small app, after the file extension it uses for todo lists.

Unless someone has a better idea for a new name for mine.
5320
WOW!

Great work in putting that all together. Job well done. I know I couldn't have done it. Credits are on their way!

The whole thread on note taking programs was a bit overwhelming for me to read & keep up with, but was a valuable source of info in my quest for the perfect sourcecode organizer, which I still haven't found.

A Google search for sourcecode organizers lead me to that thread back in February, and it was how I originally found this site.

It's great to see it finally in a format where people can handle that vast wealth of info.

I am totally impressed!

Comments:

Might be nice to include all of the programs that are in the first table in the feature table too, and not just the big 3. Maybe list the big 3 first and then the rest, and make the big 3 a dif color than the rest to make them stand out.

I really liked the Frankenote section. (so who is going to volunteer to write that? mouser?) :tellme:

1 very minor prob that is easily fixed: broken image in the MyBase section.

opening floodgates...

The first BBS software?

And didn't Windows open floodgates along with IBM by helping make computers usable and affordable to the common person...like your Grandma...not just business?

And what about AOL? They opened up the floodgates to the internet for the masses by making it so easy.

And Turbo Pascal? Delphi? Visual Basic? You don't need to be a total geek to write software any more.

and...

WHAT ABOUT ATARI'S PONG???!!!!!  ;D

(I shouldn't have to tell you how important that was and why)

I plan on adding a few more things to my ToDo List program today in preparation for this. Gave it some thought and I want to be able to load it in my system tray at startup with a specific list of what needs to be done, so I'll have to add a tray icon, ability to minimize to tray and some command line parameters for the shortcut in the startup folder....might add drag & drop to open a file too, if I can figure out how to do that. (that's some stuff on my ToDo List for today)

I already have my Instant Boss there...and my old 3M Post-It Software Notes Professional.
Current professional version of the Post-It software can be downloaded here (trial) or purchased here...older very basic free version can be downloaded here. The Professional version is fantastic and a great value for everything they included in it. If you can afford it, buy the professional version instead of using the free one.

I am one of those that needs more than 1 special place. My desk is fine, but it's shared, so I need an alternate for when that spot is occupied by my daughter, which I kind of have.

Being the creative type, and knowing that ideas often hit at inconvenient times/places, I try to maintain supplies needed for recording those spontaneous 'brain farts' in every room of the house...even my bathroom has a small hard cover spiral notebook with ribbon through the spirals that hangs on a hook on the wall, with a pen attached to another ribbon so it won't disappear. My 'personal space' is whatever space I am occupying at the moment.

One thought I was having about this experiment...cost. We shouldn't need to have a second job to pay for getting things done...it will give us less time to get things done.

I have an aversion to spending any money that I don't have to on anything, not that I really have any to spend, any way. I am pretty famous for being a very frugal tightwad packrat, and making due with what I have or what I can get for free. If I hit the lottery tomorrow that wouldn't change...it's part of who I am and who I have always been, and something I am very proud of...I waste nothing. It's almost a sort of 'religion' with me. Not many people can live a life of 'luxury' below the poverty level, like I can.

Keeping that in mind, I will try to offer alternatives to spending any money when I see that someone makes a good suggestion that may involve a purchase of some sort, just in case there are others here that are like me and either don't want to spend money or can't. It would be nice if when everyone makes suggestions that involve a purchase if you can take a few extra seconds and try to think of a free alternative...make my job of tightwadding and thinking up alternatives just a little easier.

Mouser's suggestion of index cards is a very good one that I agree with.

My free alternative to that: junk mail envelopes

Save them. Not only can you write on the blank side, but you can put things in them too. Like writing the grocery list on it and putting your coupons that go with it inside, as an example. Take a fat magic marker and cross out any address junk that may appear on the reverse side.

Most items of junk mail you receive will give you 2 envelopes to use for free...the business reply one inside, and the one the mail came in. Reusing them for something will save you money, is good for the environment, and good for you emotionally, too, since your attitude towards junk mail will change a little. You'll be much happier when you go to the mailbox with the attitude of "oh, goodie! free envelopes!" rather than 'oh, no! more useless junk to throw away".

Another thought...

I am in a unique position here. I don't really have anything that I have to do...only things I want to do. Part of getting things done involves prioritizing...and part of that is knowing what things don't really have to be done, at all. Sometimes you think you have to do something but the only person that will be affected negatively if you don't is yourself, and the effects are so minor that the stress of forcing yourself to do them outweighs the benefits and you'd be better off not doing them, at all. Or maybe it doesn't outweigh the benefits...but it's still not something you have to do. So make sure it goes on the right list...not have to, but want to.

Like my craft corner...it's a big mess. But I know where everything is. Cleaning it up would be very time consuming, likely to make me very cranky and hard to live with while doing it, and carries a strong risk of a serious back injury to my already injured back. It would take days...or maybe weeks, and the only person really affected by whether I do it or not is myself...and I can live with the negative reactions of guests that see it, I don't really care what people think (the only opinions about me that really count are my own), and my family is used to it and doesn't care either. So that isn't something I have to do. And honestly speaking, it's not something I want to do either...so I don't.
