Living Room / Re: Hats off to USPS for innovative tracking scheme...
« Last post by MilesAhead on April 08, 2011, 07:18 PM »
I think I'll market myself as a political pundit who predicts the winner of the previous Presidential Election. :)

USPS tracking motto should be "you can't get there from here."

edit: on second thought, should be: "you can't get it there from here." :)

General Software Discussion / Re: how do I get back my "Open with..."?
« Last post by MilesAhead on April 08, 2011, 05:23 PM »
Thank you, Miles

It looks almost dangerous...

I will take a closer look tomorrow when I have had some sleep!

A good way to back up your registry hives short of a Restore Point is ERUNT.
Restoring the registry from it is much less involved than using a restore point.

http://larshederer.h...e.t-online.de/erunt/

The dude Brink on the Vista site is in charge of the tutorials. He knows his stuff.  Still, it doesn't hurt to back up registry hives first. It's only around a 50 MB folder for a backup.

Curt I'd take a look at this tutorial:

http://www.vistax64....pen-add-program.html

Unfortunately they named the domain "vistax64" but it applies to all versions of Vista.  It's the best Vista specific site I've found.

He can be a noose-ance at times.

It's just a hemporary condition, soon to end as I can't keep my trap shut.

That necktie is enough bring back the turtleneck. I knew I didn't like to wear them for some reason. :)

they should in fact be drawn and quoted...

Hmmmmmmmmmmm, I was hoping he'd make coffee cups from the Styrofoam inserts and drink coffee out of 'em.

What he said about unboxing only being thrilling for the unboxer made me think of this LBJ quote:

"Did you ever think that making a speech on economics is a lot like pissing down your leg? It seems hot to you, but it never does to anyone else."

Took me awhile to figure out where to make the substitution. Almost like a secret handshake.  Looks like they need a, er, search engine, for the web site. :)

Well, you can't have everything  ;)
-cranioscopical (April 05, 2011, 09:50 PM)

Trouble is you seem to be literally correct.  Everything is exactly what I can't have! And I mean Everything!!!! Dang!!

Hmmm...thanks for the links. Surprising lack of information on the site. Wonder what the supposed problem with 1.2.1.452 was? :tellme:

Kinda hard to hide everything, but they did a pretty good job. ;)

It is weird the way they do things.  I could see if they had contributor-only betas or something.  But this stuff is just hidden.

I thought the graphic should have started a few years earlier.  No props at all to Mosaic or lynx. It's not like they'd have to research back to the 1800s or anything.

A few years earlier is practically the 1800s in Internet time. :P

Opera's popularity over all those years is kind of pathetic. :( :-\ But at least it's still around! Unlike Netscape.

It's hardly a reason not to start at the beginning which was the 90s.  The reason has more to do with vying for market share now than any historical perspective.  IOW, it doesn't mean anything. Just more marketing twaddle.

version 1.6.6 is finally out.  I haven't run it through its paces to see if it's back on track. I've updated for the time being.

He started the second dry wall company to pay back the IRS for misusing withholding tax from the first dry wall company, and on with the third.  He was a friendly upbeat guy.  Sometimes I wonder what number dry wall company he's on now, if he's still avoiding prison.

I guess he felt he'd gyp some...
-cranioscopical (April 01, 2011, 07:59 AM)

Heh heh.  No way was I board with that pun. :)

Funny thing is, everyone liked the guy. I would guess his workers felt that if they left in a clump it would drive down their wages when they tried to sign on with someone else. Plus he was making payroll.  Apparently the paychecks didn't bounce.

Anything I have online I have local copies.  The thing with some of these "businesses" is the CEO is satisfied as long as he can stay one step ahead of the IRS and the bill collectors, can keep his nice ride on the road, "talk business" on his mobile and write off some dinners and other entertainment expenses.

I knew a guy who ran a dry wall company.  When I met him he was on the third instance of it.  He started the second dry wall company to pay back the IRS for misusing withholding tax from the first dry wall company, and on with the third.  He was a friendly upbeat guy.  Sometimes I wonder what number dry wall company he's on now, if he's still avoiding prison.

Living Room / Re: Strange subtleties of the Placebo Effect
« Last post by MilesAhead on March 31, 2011, 04:34 PM »
I have heard of studies showing the placebo medicine works even when the subject KNOWS it is a placebo. I'll try to find those; but I have a lot of feeds related to science...

The thing you have to watch out for are counterfeit placebos!! I hear IBM is going to bar code every pill and log it into a world wide database to ensure only genuine placebos are distributed in the third world.

All great suggestions, I guess there's not a need for an app to do this after all :)

Thanks a ton.
-FrankEBailey` (March 31, 2011, 01:30 AM)

Also once you have settled on the utilities you are going to use, you can always do a macro to push the buttons and drag the mouse etc. for automation. Or even batch with xcopy to copy everything to a folder.
5320
(nevermind) :)

I've been using this for double-click image mount:

http://wincdemu.sysprogs.org/

Once it's mounted, you can use my Tray utility to unmount just by selecting the drive letter radio button and clicking the Open Button. Or you can just right click the mounted image in Explorer and click Eject.

My Tray app is on the front page of my site:

http://www.favessoft.com/

afa copy to folder ordinary explorer drag & drop works fine.

One caution about these image mounters, if you try to access with multi-threaded app such as a multi-threaded video converter or multiple instances of a video converter they can often hang.  Still the emulator is a nice free utility. Once installed I forgot about it. I had to dig it out to remember the name of it. :)

Finished Programs / Re: SOLVED: New Folder by F-key for Windows 7
« Last post by MilesAhead on March 29, 2011, 06:09 PM »
Well, not to upset you, but since using 1.5, all is working fine now :-[ hadn't thought you where still looking for a solution, as imho it's fixed, but I now realize I didn't post that here... sorry :-[ :-[

Not at all.  I got some feedback on other boards.  Mainly because someone was using a highly customized shell.  Rather than chase around I figured I'd just include one with no class distinctions(pun intended.)  :)

I appreciate the feedback you gave earlier. It was very helpful. :)

Ok I've taken another approach.  The download now includes 7FolderLite.exe including source. It does not use the class name at all to limit the hotkey. Use it as last resort in cases where the Desktop class name is not predictable.

DC Website Help and Extras / Delete as well as Modify Button for own post?

I think I posted in the wrong thread a year ago but since my post is in the chain, every time someone replies to that thread it shows up in "new replies to your posts" section.

It would be nice if after I realized I lame posted I could just obliterate it myself instead of calling attention to it.  Is it possible/desirable?

Also I think it a generally useful feature. Not just for the particular instance I noted.
