@PhilB66: Thanks. Interesting. Now we know.
So "16/20/24 pixels only" is what we have. A big mistake by Microsoft, but a mistake it should be easy to correct. Maybe in W8 ?

I wonder why that particular limitation had to be set though?
I suppose it could make the Taskbar too fat/cluttered.

Oops, sorry. I forgot to mention that RarmaRadio has a pretty good Help document.
About to edit the OP with that note.

Adware.
Actually, I don't think I noticed any sign of adware in the install or the operation, but then I downloaded it from the raimersoft (author's) site. I don't recall that it had any of those annoying  and sneaky default opt-ins that you usually get with adware anyway.

It's a beautiful radio. I rather like it, and my daughter wants me to install it on her laptop now, after seeing it on mine. (She wants to record some of her fave pop songs.)

Living Room / Re: Desktop items text visibility (Win 7)
« Last post by IainB on April 25, 2012, 10:22 AM »
I had the same problem in XP and in Win7.
Try this approach: Windows 7 - Make my desktop icons more readable!

I used everything in that post:
  • 1. to get the icon text clearer, I used the Advanced Appearance Settings - Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Personalization\Window Color and Appearance
  • 2. to make the icons bigger I used Ctrl+ scroll UP on the Desktop.
  • 3. to give a better background, I installed Fences. This is not necessary, but it makes for an uncluttered/tidier Desktop and helps if you like to see your wallpaper.

Example of my Desktop at 10pt Segoe UI bold (Step 1), with scrolled-up (bigger) icons (Step 2), and Fences (Step 3), as above:

Well, thanks @mouser, but don't be in too much of a hurry to apologise just yet.
I am guessing that no-one else has had this error - is that right?
If it's just me, then that "invalid pointer operation" might be a clue.
The touchpad/mouse has been behaving badly - very sluggish on scrolling - but only in Firefox, it seems. This is something new, starting a couple of days ago.

Otherwise the pattern seemed to be:
1. Selecting the arrow and text box tools, and then the object selector last seemed to trigger the error.
2. The error is always a light blue screen with only one or two objects from your editing (but no text in the boxes). Trying to Undo the last change seems to trigger the error box "Invalid pointer operation" error message, and it seems that at that point the screenshot gets overwritten. All changes lost, anyway.

I can't repeat it every time, so it's not repeatable.
I worked around it by taking a copy of the amended screenshot image after every small step, and then using the copy to replace the working copy in the Screenshot directory, every time the working copy was zapped/overwritten by that blue background image file.

Has anyone been successful in downloading and installing their application on XP?
You maybe don't need to, depending on your requirements.
I haven't finished playing about with it enough to be sure just yet, but the application appears to be integrated with the shell for Windows Explorer and also acts as a sync tool for SkyDrive - i.e., I think it creates a local sync copy of what is on Sky Drive.
I already had my directory listing of SkyDrive in my Windows Explorer from a while back - I had mapped it as a network drive. You can drag and drop to it, etc.
I'm not so sure I want a redundant/duplicate local sync copy of SkyDrive on my local drive, so I may disable it if it does what I think it does.

I already have a Sync tool for Google docs, and I disabled that for the same reason - redundant/duplicate local sync copy. I still keep it as a mapped network drive though.

Yes! Try Xmarks out.
If you do, please let us know how you get along.

SCREENSHOT OF APP INTERFACE:
RarmaRadion - screenshot - 2012-04-25 (small).png

Introduction/Overview:
A very nice Internet streamed radio/TV manager, and set up for easy find, capture and play.
A simple GUI belying its relatively extensive functionality and a comprehensive set of tools.
   Key Features:
  • Enables you to listen to and simultaneously record multiple streamed Internet Radio Stations from around the world.
  • Search, capture and management of available Internet radio stations and their output.
  • Capture and management of recording/playback of Internet radio stations and specific song tracks (where track separation is possible in a digital stream).
  • Search for and select Internet-streamed radio stations from around the world.
  • Select, sort, manage station Favourites.
  • Select/set some stations as presets for speed of access.
  • Select several stations to stream simultaneously as a grouped "Session". (Like saving a set of tabs in a browsing session, to restart as a set at a later point.)
  • Stream and record multiple stations simultaneously, whilst listening to another station.
  • Uses streamed station data (where present) to collect station logo and album cover art for currently streaming sessions, and song lyrics.
  • Can record either a station stream or just a currently playing song (if the stream data defines the latter).
  • Has facility to create a schedule for automatic recording.
  • Displays station stream information.
  • Displays cover art and lyrics for each song.
  • Can also connect to Internet TV stations.
  • Shutdown timer.
  • Dynamic boost.
  • Splitting files.
  • Playlist files.

WARNING: (Edit 2012-04-27) The installer currently comes with an OpenCandy install and if you do not select the "Custom Installation" and untick the Babylon adware, then the adware will be installed by default.
If, like me, you have an outgoing firewall block (I use Windows 7 Firewall Control <--- ), then the installer will not be able to "phone home" and fetch the adware, and the OpenCandy part of the install will not occur and will not be apparent to you at all.
(Thanks to @PhilB66 for alerting me to this, in the discussion thread below.)
RarmaRadio Babylon install adware.png

Who this app is designed for:
Anyone who likes to listen to different radio services across the world, and who would also like to record stations/songs - or, (say) a radio theatre play - as they listen.

The Good:
It works very well, and does what it is designed to do.
Is a surprisingly comprehensive radio application.
Comprehensive Help file.

Limitations:
It seems to be constrained only by those stations that do not meet with the stream data standard that RarmaRadio needs to look for.
Thus you may get one station that is mono in one ear, or RarmaRadio is unable to automatically determine the details of a song that is streaming, or when it has ended (for recording purposes).

Conclusions:
Super radio, and a beautiful, intuitive interface.
Very useful and enjoyable tool for those who like listening to the radio and/or recording programmes/music.
(I have not checked out its TV functionality.)

I have been using SSC quite a bit today.
Error #1: All was going swimmingly for about 10 minutes, until the screenshot disappeared and I was left with a couple of objects on a light blue background.
When I tried to "Undo", I got the error message:
Invalid pointer operation (SSC) 2012-04-25.jpg
I shut down SSC and restarted it, and had to redo my work (lost approx. 10 mins of work), so it took me about 10 mins to redo the work, doing Ctrl+S every now and then.
That's 20 mins in total so far.

Then I had a break, and put in about another 10 mins of additional work, doing Ctrl+S every now and then.

Error #2: Then the same error occurred, with the same outcome.
That's 30 mins work lost. The air was blue with curses and I was frightening my son and daughter.
I restarted SSC, and found that one arrow and one squashed-up box were all that was left, and were in the top left hand corner of the screenshot I had been working on. I had not put them there.
I moved them and started to redo all the work, doing Ctrl+S every now and then.
Had a break and drafted this error report.

...then, same type of error:
Error #3:
SSC Error 3 - screenshot (small).jpg
Image file destroyed/overwritten.
So I started incrementally saving a copy of the image file at every step, and each time SSC failed, I went back to the last saved image file and started from there.
Finally got there.

Looks like Microsoft may have just caught up and leapfrogged Dropbox: Microsoft takes on Dropbox with major SkyDrive update

I am awaiting the apparently soon-to-be-announced Google docs upgrade so that I can compare the two (SkyDrive vs. Gdocs).
At the moment, most of my docs are in Gdocs, with a few much larger files on SkyDrive. I used the latter as Gdocs was too restrictive on file sizes at the time.
At the moment the FREE 25Gb availability on SkyDrive looks hard to beat.
I might stop syncing my documents to Gdocs and put them on SkyDrive instead. Trouble is, I have found Gdocs pretty useful.
Still, it's nice to have choices.    :)

As an afterthought:
You could try this in conjunction with - or as an alternative to - adjusting the display as above: get some/different spectacles.
I need to use spectacles for reading only, but their focal point and depth of field make them useless for reading my laptop screen, as it is typically 24 inches or so away from my eyes. So I experimented  with some cheap drugstore reading glasses and found a pair at +1.50 magnification that had just the right focal point and a greater depth of field (for my eyes) to enable me to read the screen with ease, and they could also help with reading printed hardcopy closer up and further away (though they were not as good as my reading glasses for close up). The prescription reading glasses cost over $100/pair. The drugstore reading glasses cost $30 for two pairs. So I buy two pairs and have something in reserve when a pair in use starts to fall apart. They usually break at the weakest point - which seems to be the spring-loaded hinges - after a while, because I always have them hanging via a lanyard around my neck.

Possibly useful tips re the display:
(a) GPU adjustments: when I switched to my HP ENVY 14 laptop (Win 7-64 Home Premium), I found the display incredibly glary (needed snow-goggles). After googling around I upgraded to the latest driver and Catalyst Control Centre (toolkit) for my AMD Radeon GPU, and adjusted the settings. In particular, I turned down the brightness and turned up the gamma. I saved different settings to presets, so I could switch to different presets to suit the task (e.g., image viewing, or reading). This made the screen much less glary and easier to read, and those small icons came up much clearer and with deeper hues.

(b)Turning on and adjusting ClearType: probably a "must" as well, though it probably won't affect the icons.

Some possible alternatives for adjusting the visual ergonomics in Windows 7 64-bit Home Premium:
1. Change sizes of your display items all together: via Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Display. You might not like this, but it's probably worth a suck it and see approach.

2. Tweak the individual items using this approach: Customize the Title Bar and Other System Fonts in Windows 7. I used this and after a lot of fiddling about was able to get my display just how I wanted it, though I left the small Systray notification icons as they were. Can be quite confusing and tedious, but it is rewarding if it enables you to get things just so. Once you set it all up, you probably won't need to alter it much after that.

I googled your query and read in some forums just now that there is apparently a bug in Active Title Bar size change in Windows 7 (I think that's accessed via the 2nd group above), where the Systray notification icons get bigger or smaller as you make the Active Title Bar bigger or smaller.

Hope this helps or is of use.
5315
I believe you can do that with xmarks and profiles for sync with certain machines.  I'm not sure though, as I've never explored it.
Yes, those were the features that I was using in 2010. It was brilliant, but a bit tricky to set up and maintain. It would probably be even better now. I think my file/folder duplication problem (described above) was probably because I tried to be too clever with the system in attempting to get it to do the sort of thing that @Josh is wanting to do also. I don't know how many users had the same sort of problem as I had. (Haven't googled it or checked the Xmarks forum for a long time.)

Well, science is now political, though I think it didn't used to be.
"Pure" research used to be funded by Government, but that was kinda defenestrated during the economic crises from the mid-'80s onwards. It all had to be "cost-effective", implying a commercial payback or rate of return within a reasonable time-frame - so that then was the "make or break" rule for the business case for a project to get funded.

I recall the DSIR (Department of Scientific and Industrial Research) in New Zealand - founded in 1926 - had most of its borderline projects canned when it was reconstituted into profit-driven "Crown Research Institutes" under the Crown Research Institutes Act 1992.

Whilst I could see the need for viability and cost-effectiveness, I reckoned this was a huge potential loss to society, because some of its research projects were in their infancy and had been quite imaginative and with potentially far-reaching benefits.
For example, as an environmentalist and whilst working in the energy sector (where I have done quite a bit of consulting work), one project that I was watching with interest was the research to make wood alcohol (ethanol) fuel as an additive to petrol, to reduce the national economic cost and dependency on imported fossil fuels. Potentially good for the environment and the balance of payments.
This research project was unceremoniously canned in its preliminary viability trials as the new profit-driven regime kicked in. Apparently not viable/cost-effective enough, though I was always skeptical of this as I never could get hold of any figures that proved this was the case. It was all "estimates". My bet is that it could have been so cost-effective (NZ has humungous stocks of pine forests - a national asset) that it scared the pants right off of the petroleum importers/suppliers, and so they maybe (say) lobbied Government appropriately, perhaps by agreeing to contain the rising cost of petrol over a predefined period (of years).

The DSIR research had also paved the way for a feasible national supply/distribution infrastructure to support CNG and LPG fuel conversions to vehicles, and fortunately this project had proved its viability and been implemented in the market, supported by financial incentives (subsidies) to convert, and before the CRI Act canned it.
The subsidies came off and the technology showed itself to still be viable and cost effective for high mileage vehicles. A lot of taxis and commercial vehicles use it now, for example, but it is definitely not cost-effective for domestic cars/mileage - even after increased petrol prices. Similarly for "hybrid"-powered cars.
I wish it were otherwise, but reality bites.

And I wish similar success to CNG/LPG could have been seen for the research into wind-powered generation of electricity in New Zealand, but it can't and so seems to have died a death. This is after a lot of risky implementation had gone ahead for proof-of-concept trials, funded by taxpayers (Government). It has proven neither viable nor cost-effective, and in New Zealand's primarily pastoral economy there has been a public backlash because the technology definitely despoils the extremely beautiful and formerly unspoiled environment (a national environmental asset), and apparently conservationists and ornithologists say it has decimated (or has the potential to decimate) some bird stocks including some of the rare ones (another national environmental asset). However, the official body-count for this has not been declared/published so I reckon it is probably true and we are not to be told because it is highly political.

I think these might be the same/similar reasons to the Governments in UK and Germany recently withdrawing the huge subsidies for wind-powered and solar-powered generation. Surprising in Germany, as they seemed to have committed themselves regardless of the cost, but I guess in the end the lack of viability/cost-effectiveness cannot be ignored or subsidised indefinitely by the taxpayer - especially when there's a serious economic crunch in progress.
5317
A corollary there... If there is good science happening, there must be no vested interests in that particular field quite yet... :P
Yes, I wondered about that. This project must be consuming a mass of money and it'll probably be funded by organisations with more than an entirely philanthropic interest in pure research.
5318
I suggested above that the Holocaust taught us something:
That is, the Holocaust was a historical landmark and a trigger that released the idea of an indelible and greater humanitarianising and civilizing force into a world which previously had nothing quite like that before. So the 6 million deaths might not have been entirely in vain. The Holocaust taught us something which has arguably enabled humanity to take a further social evolutionary step - not that all societies/nations necessarily want to take that step, unfortunately.
I was quite surprised by serendipity today to read this post about how some universities/colleges can enable students to take advantage of the lessons learned: Remembering the Holocaust Through Learning
Through the Holocaust museum and non-profit organizations, Americans and others around the world can give funds and spread education about genocide prevention and conflict resolution. There are also a few ways in which someone can get a formal education in Jewish Studies, Hebrew, Holocaust and Genocide Studies, and Conflict Resolution.

Remembering the Holocaust Through Learning
Extract regarding the syllabus and qualifications available:
Master of Arts in Jewish Studies, Hebrew College:
Through Boston-area-based Hebrew College, students can earn several online degrees based on the study of Jewish texts, history, language, and tradition. The Master of Arts in Jewish Studies allows students to enrich their personal knowledge of Judaism and tailor their education to their desired career paths in Jewish communal organizations, rabbinic or cantorial studies, or Jewish academic scholarship.

Graduate Certificate in Holocaust and Genocide Studies, Gratz College:
This 18-hour fully online certificate is designed for those who would like to expand their knowledge of the Holocaust, or those who would like to be able to teach its historical significance better or create an interfaith dialogue. Two courses, The Holocaust and European Mass Murder, and Comparative Genocide, are required. Elective courses include: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam; Teaching the Holocaust; History of Antisemitism; Children of the Nazi Era; The Warsaw Ghetto; and The Problem of Evil.

Master of Arts in Holocaust and Genocide Studies, Richard Stockton College of New Jersey:
In New Jersey, the Holocaust and its historical significance are required subjects in schools. This degree program is geared not only at teachers, museum curators, and clergy, but also at those who would appreciate a better understanding of the Holocaust and its historical significance as well as an understanding of current conflicts. The interdisciplinary program includes coursework in general European history, genocide education, contemporary genocides, Nazi art and propaganda, and non-Jewish victims of the Nazis.

Graduate Certificate in Conflict and Peace Studies, University of North Carolina at Greensboro:
This 18-credit-hour program is designed to provide students with the tools to communicate effectively and design conflict resolution systems for a variety of situations. Students will study topics including fundamentals of conflict and peace studies, organizational conflict, and cultural dimensions of conflict resolution.

Master of Arts in Negotiation, Conflict Resolution, and Peacebuilding, California State University, Dominguez Hills:
The 36-semester-hour program is designed to prepare students for a career in mediation, public policy, social work, teaching, inter-cultural and community conflicts, among others. Courses cover topics including: ethics of negotiation, conflict resolution, and peacebuilding; theories of conflict; intercultural conflict resolution; and conflict and the media.
There seems to be a singular and remarkable thing about this - i.e., the emphasis on peaceful approaches - including, for example, the study of genocide, conflict resolution, organisational conflict, peacebuilding (all for use in the future).

Good opening effort Iain...
...
...make semi-scientific charts and diagrams of stuff. There's one going on here. Consider a Tree diagram - either vertically or horozontally is fine - that starts out with The Communication Medium Subset Content Guidelines. Here, the Communication Medium is all of DC, but this analysis applies to basically anything, from public parks to malls.

Branch #1: Governmental vs Corporate
This means that "Free Speech" works profoundly differently in Government controlled Public Areas vs Company controlled venues.
...
All the rules change in Company controlled. (Even if Mouser doesn't have a Biz name, it's still his ballpark, basically still Company controlled, such as a sole proprietorship.)
...
Branch #2: "Acceptible vs Not Acceptible".
I basically disposed of this for the Government areas above. For Company controlled areas, it's all about the Company's vision of what they are offering. This ranges all the way from zero monitored areas that can indeed include a bad trolling culture, yet even that is at the edges of the entire concept of speech. There are some ways to handle that, but nothing's perfect.
...
First off, thanks for the appreciative comments. In my better moments, I generally tend to invest my cognitive surplus and do my best in anything that I:
(a) consider worth doing;
(b) consider could be of help/use to me or someone else.
...
Your branching tree scheme makes sense to me, and I think you are spot-on with your comments on "Company controlled". You there reflected my own thoughts about censorship by Google (which is discussed in another DCF thread).
That's one reason why I am ambivalent regarding business-necessary censorship in any commercial forum, including (say) the DC forum. One thing that I generally do have an issue with though is the potential for censorship through or combined with the use of stigmatisation.

Thought from the 2nd thread:
mouser has always said that he feels that dc is not the right place for political and religious subjects. He's often ignored, but that wish does keep most of those discussions in check, which is helpful imo. I dont consider that censorship.
I've never seen a post censored here in the sense of removed.

This was the idea I had originally meant to insert here:
...I like to view things on an slider scale. Per Renegade, if he thinks he's become too loud on those issues, and wants to slow down a little, then great! Per Wraith Part1, presuming that enough of the social discussions are indeed in Living Room, then someone who just wants to talk about software ... shouldn't be looking at the Living Room. They should ... wait for it ... Focus on the other *twelve* sections! Or, if they *still* want to go to the Living Room but yet not see these hot topics, then there's that subdivision thing, they shouldn't go the Soapbox Nook. "Don't go to the Soapbox Room and then complain that people are talking politics!"

We trust Mouser overall, but that Focus theme is sadly the legendary wedge used by other forces with agendas to begin censorship plans. "Let's keep Focus, let's keep it Family Friendly, let's keep it Pleasant." The best answer in my view is to make the wide-topic area less visible if we like, such as not in the public feed, or even on the "recent posts" down at the bottom, but still freely available.

And again: (my emphasis)
This is one of those cases where we might be able to use one more category, Other Discussions etc. There's value in getting this crew's opinions about any topic that isn't pure trolling, because y'all put more work into your posts than almost any other forum I've seen. Given our efforts to discuss the various censorship problems, it WOULD bother me (open mouth, insert foot moment coming up), "Oh, it's fine to refuse all censorship, until it hits YOUR pet topic, THEN it's "not appropriate".
That's precisely the profound fundamental problem with censorship - it starts with the edge cases of "not appropriate" and then according to people's agendas, slowly scope-creeps its way into people getting arrested for tweets.

How about members only section, so that politics, history, religion threads don't show up in DC public feed?
