General Software Discussion / Re: Windows XP Myths
« Last post by Carol Haynes on October 13, 2006, 11:59 AM »
Remember, folks...this is the same Microsoft that brought you things like WinME...which even they have never had any clue on how to make it stable.  ;D
Windows ME was more stable than 98 since that is what it was based on. It simply required ME compatible drivers and Bioses. During the time ME was released, mainboard manufacturing moved over to mainland china, we saw the beginning of the capacitor fiasco and people were trying to install Win9x drivers on ME. There was nothing inherently unstable about ME, no more than 98. It was not Microsoft making ME unstable but the end users and the hardware. Both of which are obsolete and don't hold a cadle to 2000 and XP.

ROFLMAO - you serious! Even MS abandonned ME and recommended users with win98 stay with it. They didn't even run through the usual lifecycle process for a new OS.

Living Room / Re: Xerces Panic Error .... help ...

It isn't an Adobe specific thing - if you look at http://www.google.co...rces%20panic%20error you will see it affects a range of unrelated applications (the most common seems to be Macromedia Dreamweaver - the version predating Adobe involvement). It's all very strange. Apart from deleting the whole 'Charset' key I haven't seen any other solutions on the internet that work !

Problem solved ...

I exported another copy of the key from a second installation of Windows XP Pro SP2 and used Beyond compare to compare the two sets of contents.

There was only one difference ... in the problem version there was one extra entry:

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MIME\Database\Charset\85xIfTB5OuN4y]

Deleting that single subkey solved the problem.

Anyone know what this subkey was about? I did a Google search on the charset value "85xIfTB5OuN4y" and it came up with nothing.

Living Room / Xerces Panic Error .... help ...
« Last post by Carol Haynes on October 12, 2006, 05:48 AM »
I am having a problem using AdobePDF (part of Acrobat Pro 7) to 'print' to PDF files. The print process starts and then I get an error (see subject). Reinstalling Adobe software doesn't make any difference.

There are loads of references to this when I Google the error message but not many of them seem to make any sense. A lot seem to be to do with Dreamweaver but that can't be the issue here.

I have found one solution (which works) on Adobe forums and wondered if someone could enlighten me why it might work and what the potential implications for the solution might be. Also anyone got an easy explanation of how to rebuild the registry key with non corrupt but essential info.

The solution involves deleting this registry key:

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MIME\Database\Charset]

and all its subkeys and values.

I backed it up and deleted the key and AdobePDF worked fine. It was reported that simply importing the key back again solved the problem but having imported the key back it worked fine until I restarted my system and then the error is back.

Sorry I am a complete dunce when it comes to things like MIME settings - can someone give me some cluse how to troubleshoot this issue.

Here are the registry entries I removed - can anyone see anything that looks wrong here?

Now that that is sorted out has anyone upgraded to the corporate version (9.1) ?

It is strange that people registering for the free version 7 get an upgrade link to this, but as a registered version 9 user I don't ???

I am intrigued by the idea that you can restore images to different hardware sets with v. 9.1 including virtual machines. That looks like a seriously useful thing to be able to do if it works well. It would be ideal for when you upgrade a motherboard or similar if you can avoid having to do a fresh install of Windows, and means that all you backup DVDs are still of some use when you have a new system!

When I tried to install in 1.5 it said it was incompatible. I have another extension that allows overriding the compatibility test - once I had ticked the right box (duh --- forgot the first time) it installed and works fine.

I have to say though that in DC forums the onscreen buttons are a lot quicker.

Just use http://www.acronis.com/mag/vnu-ati7 (he has removed the link specific to his serial number). This allows you to register and receive your own serial number directly from Acronis - you are then a customer and can download the file from the Acronis website.

I got a deal on a Router + PCI card which was cheaper than the PCI card - so I bought 2 and sold the spare Router at a profit. So I am not bothered. Everything is also 100% backward compatible - and they say in the blurb that you can even run 54g devices in the system with 50% speed increase (though I haven't tried this) without degrading machines working at the faster rate. Looks like a win win situation (at the moment).

Just a bit nonplussed as to why the adapter almost next to the router is slower than the other one - I wonder if somewthing is being overpowered by the strength of signal? There is an option to turn down the power on the PCI card but it doesn't seem to work in the current version of drivers. (You can set it but the system automatically defaults back to 100%)

Strange - I have my 802.11n network up and running now and the PC furthest from router (and through two walls) is running solidly at 270Mbps, but my main PC which is about 8m from the router is only running at 162Mbps ??

Anyone any ideas?

Living Room / Re: For Sale - wireless gear (UK only)
« Last post by Carol Haynes on October 11, 2006, 07:58 AM »
Any UK people interested in any wireless kit I have put the following items for sale on Amazon ...

2 x NetGear omnidirectional antennae for improving reception quality - they replace the built in antenna on your router or PCI card (provided the originals are removable). I also have a couple of extension cables ...
http://s1.amazon.co..../Y08Y3210140Y6146697

2 x Linksys WMP54GS-UK 125 Mbps Wireless-G PCI Adapter with SpeedBooster
These are good wireless b and g cards. Speedbooster only works when all items on the network are speedbooster enabled - but they still worka at full 54Mbps and seem to get good reception - esp. with the Netgear antennae, though they are good without too.
http://s1.amazon.co..../Y08Y0671430Y2919610

1 x Linksys WRE54G Wireless-G Range Expander - External
Let's you expand network range when you have thick walls by relaying the signal. Only works with Linksys routers. A bit of a fiddle to set up but once it is up and running it is switch on and forget about it. Forces your whole network to use WEP encryption is the only draw back. Linksys promised to update to WPA but haven't done anything so far! I got it working with a WAG54G ADSL Gateway/Router (below) without too many problems (despite Linksys saying it doesn't support that router!).
http://s1.amazon.co..../Y09Y1790131Y5673651

1 x Linksys Wireless-G ADSL Gateway WAG54G - Wireless router + 4-port switch
Works fine (now that I have discovered that you have to disable filtering on the router IP in AdMuncher!). Doesn't drop connections (or at least hasn't for me). Requires manual setup - so you need ISP settings (I can tell you the BT Broadband settings).
http://s1.amazon.co..../Y08Y6662350Y5975297

Anyone interested in any of these items use PM to contact me and make me an offer (can be a bit less than Amazon price because they take a pound of flesh for letting you post the items!).

Post New Requests Here / Re: IDEA: Tabbed interface for Microsoft Word
« Last post by Carol Haynes on October 11, 2006, 05:52 AM »
Quick question, wouldnt it be possible to do this using the MS Word control provided with MS Office and a tab control? I mean, it would take some tweaking to get certain features working properly, but it doesnt sound like a hard app to code if this method would work.

That's what DocuBar does (which I mentioned above and no one has commented on) - it is basically a word template that adds in a control so that an extra tool bar is generated which acts as required inside Word (ie. a tab bar - it just isn't called that).

I'd guess the second link will be time limited - and Acronis may get a bit suspicious if it is downloaded many times !! Watch out you may find your serial number becomes invalid.

Best way would be to use the first link, register to get a serial number (which you will need anyway) and then visit you account and check your registered products for your personal download link.

You could try DocuBar which adds a button bar to access multiple documents (similar to tabs really)

Living Room / For sale Brand new (unwrapped) Netgear DG834N router (UK only)
« Last post by Carol Haynes on October 10, 2006, 04:21 PM »
Big WOW added !! This is really neat and really simple to install. The only problem I had was the setup requires a wired ethernet connection and an ADSL connection - it won't proceed without both. Given that I want a wireless network I think this is a bit of a short sighted design requirement 'cos if I could plug in an ethernet cable I probably wouldn't have bothered with a wireless network in the first place. Having overcome that issue with a telephone extension cable the installation was absolute simplicity (and a complete no brainer compared with Linsys installations).

Anyway ... I now have a spare brand new Netgear DG834N router (still in its sealed packaging).

I have put it on Amazon for sale (see http://s1.amazon.co..../202-0598010-8130205). If anyone wants to make me a reasonable offer here I will withdraw it from the Amazon listings. Just drop me a PM. (Sorry UK only)

Now I am off to play again.

Update - sorry sold quickly !

Disk Defragmenter  Partial

Myth - "The built-in Disk Defragmenter is good enough."

Reality - "This statement would be true if the built-in defragmenter was fast, automatic, and customizable. Unfortunately, the built-in defragmenter does not have any of these features. The built-in defragmenter takes many minutes to hours to run. It requires that you keep track of fragmentation levels, you determine when performance has gotten so bad you have to do something about it, and then you manually defragment each drive using the built-in defragmentation tool." - Source - Comparison Chart

Disk Defragmenter Limitations - "The Disk Defragmenter tool is based on the full retail version of Diskeeper by Executive Software International, Inc. The version that is included with Microsoft Windows 2000 and later provides limited functionality in maintaining disk performance by defragmenting volumes that use the FAT, the FAT32, or the NTFS file system. The XP version has the following limitations." - Source

- It can defragment only local volumes.
- It can defragment only one volume at a time.
- It cannot defragment one volume while scanning another.
- It cannot be easily scheduled without scripts or third party utilities
- It can run only one Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-in at a time.

Another error - Windows built in defragmenter can be scheduled easily with Windows own Sheduled Tasks applet in Control Panel.

General Software Discussion / AdMuncher --- ARGHHH .... mystery solved.
« Last post by Carol Haynes on October 10, 2006, 05:10 PM »
I have been using AdMuncher for quite a while and found it very good (despite my early whinging).

One thing on my system has been REALLY annoying me for months. My Linksys router admin is accessed via http://192.186.1.1 and for a long time pages have been problematic in the management front end. They either don't display at all (common), only partially display or are malformed. Strangely my Desktop is the only device on the network with these problems - other computers work fine.

I finally traced the problem to AdMuncher (by pure chance) and adding 192.168.1.1 to the 'Don't filter of URL' personal filter list cures the problem instantly.

Given that I am about to change my wireless network (still waiting for delivery of the goodies) I have discovered this a bit late in the game but for anyone else having trouble with a router it may be worth adding it to trusted site lists in any suitable applications (obviously don't allow all access via a destop firewall or you may as well simply ininstall the firewall!)

Yes I was looking for an alternative client but they all have their drawbacks and I like some of the extra features in Outlook which I use a lot (Calendar, Tasks etc).

Webstyle produces quite nice JavaScript based menus and stuff like that for web pages and then you can easily fill the page with content.

If you just want to produce a static page based website it is very useful and easy to use.

Shock and Awe !
5274
It might help if there was some explanation of BBT, RBT and DDO - what is that supposed to tell a user ...

I almost never look at the log (even if there was a problem) 'cos it makes no sense to the general user - and there is no point asking MS for support.

I presume the PST file structure is a basic database type structure with variable record contents (depending on whether the record is an email, calendar entry etc).

I can't for the life of me understand why the files seem to be so prone to corruption without the host software even noticing!

By the way PST files over 2Gb are not recommended because they get corrupted - this certainly was a problem. I'm not sure if it is fixed in Outlook 2003. If you have over 2Gb of data in your file it must take Outlook an age to load up and searching for anything (without X1) must be horrendously slow!
5275
The problem with ScanPST is that it simply truncates the PST file at the first error (as far as I can tell). So there is a big potential to lose emails.

Rather than using ScanPST initially try copying all your emails to a new PST file. (Create a new PST file from the File menu and then copy the folders from the Personal Folders tree).

If you have already used ScanPST you can check the file size before and after to estimate how much data has been lost in the repair. (The original is still there as a .BAK file). You can try and recover manually as above by closing Outlook and renaming the backup to a new name with a PST extension and then restart Outlook and use File > Open to load the original PST file as an extra set of folders).

Here are a few useful articles ...

and some other options ... (not tried them though ... beware)
