The Getting Organized Experiment of 2006 / Re: keeping fit kind of tip.
« Last post by app103 on September 22, 2006, 01:03 PM »
I could never deal with a stationary bike or treadmill. It's too boring for me.

I want to see the scenery change...feel the wind in my hair.

And there is definitely something to be said about having a purpose & a destination. Unlike some stationary bike or treadmill, if you leave your house with a destination & purpose, you won't stop till it's completed and you are home again. And at the same time, you can accomplish some getting things done, if it involves a trip to a store for something you need...or the mailbox...etc.

And if you use the time to clear your mind of stresses and soak in what you are seeing/hearing/feeling around you, you will find that a lot of creativity will start to flow.

Make it even more enjoyable...take a walk & bring a digital camera...snap pics of everything...stuff you wouldn't think of taking pics of normally....street signs...cracks on the sidewalk.

Do you recognize this picture? (hint: look at my avatar)
DSCS0017.JPG

It was taken while on a walk...right on my own block...in front of a neighbor's house.

Keeping fit isn't just a physical thing...it should involve your whole being.

I just use the "busy" animated cursor from the old Windows theme called The Golden Era. It's thicker than the standard ibeam and and has little moving red/white/blue lines...looks like a barbershop pole.  :D

After I made the post on what was my favorites, I came across a cute email in my inbox that I blogged about here, which made me realize I had forgotten some major program I can't live without:

Paintshop Pro 7 (I don't like the newer versions and will only use that one)

What's my favorites? Or maybe what is it that I just can't live without?

First & formost...

My own DClock. I would go nuts if I didn't see it at the top of my screen....it HAS to be there. I even keep an older version that doesn't create registry entries on a floppy in my purse in case I find myself on someone else's pc.  ;D

Then the rest:

There is a good reason why FileBox Extender is now freeware...unfortunately, it's being retired...this is probably the last version there will ever be.  :(

After a great deal of development work we have sadly concluded that it is not practical to adapt FileBox eXtender to work under Window Vista – the architecture is simply too different. By way of apology to customers who were hoping for an upgrade path we are offering anyone who purchased a license for Filebox eXtender after Dec. 31, 2005 a choice of a license swap for another of our products (either for yourself or as a gift for a friend), or a refund of your purchase price. To claim, simply email us a copy of your license key, together with your full name, company name (if any), email and postal address at the time of your purchase.

FileBox eXtenderâ„¢ - keep favorite folders at your fingertips - free software for everyone, for Windows XP and older (not supported under Vista)

Someone asked me yesterday if there was a program that would set any window he wanted as always on top. I remembered one, but didn't know what the name of it was, so I did a google search and checked whatever I could find for the familiar screenshot I was looking for. It turned out to be FileBox Extender.

I don't remember why I never tried this program before. I wish I did. I figured I'd download it and install it and give it a try...and I am LOVING it!

My only regret is not installing it sooner.

Post New Requests Here / Re: Text editor with good spell checker
« Last post by app103 on September 20, 2006, 04:32 PM »
Similar to Apps suggestion....

You could use Tinyspell.
http://www.tinyspell.m6.net/
I have used it every day for years now to check my spelling in the Accounting package MYOB, but works with all windows programs.

Way back when we were making jokes about everyone speaking fantastic Typonese in my chatroom, we went in search for the solution that would provide spell checking in our chat clients.

One of the programs we tried was TinySpell, which we all ditched in less than 20 minutes. It was just annoying. It would beep and you'd be typing so fast you were at the end of the line before you could react to it and try to figure out what it was that you misspelled.

At least with As-U-Type, you could set it to auto-correct and it was also good for setting up text shortcuts to make things even faster, which came in handy with us for those stupidly long strings of text to perform admin duties in the channel. It even makes sure you capitalized the first word in every sentence.

You really wouldn't believe how great this is till you try it. Download the demo...you'll love it.

There is a way to save the additions you make to the dictionary in the demo, but it will cause you to have to save it before closing it each & every time, and loading it when you start it next time.

On the main program window there are 2 buttons, one for spelling dictionaries and one for correction databases. Go to each one and click export and save it as either spelling.txt or corrections.txt before closing the program. Then the next time you run it, do the same thing but click import and select the correct file that you saved before.

What is great about this is that you build a universal dictionary that goes with you from application to application and this works in EVERYTHING you can type in...from e-mail to messenger clients to forums to Windows Notepad. The more you use it, the more accurate it becomes.

Now the bad things about it...

It's only for Windows...and only for English. (sorry)

General Software Discussion / Re: idea for donation coder CD
« Last post by app103 on September 20, 2006, 03:37 PM »
If I remember correctly, cafepress has a CD service where you upload the content you want on the disk, design your cover and insert, (maybe label too?) and they handle the rest, shipping & all. Might be something to consider if it's cost effective.

This idea reminds me of a lot of the computer magazines that include a CD every month of all kinds of freeware & trials of various programs.

Now I am not saying that we should do a new CD each month, because that would be crazy, but maybe for the beginning of 2007 we could release a DC Best of the Year disk with stuff from the previous year in the way of software trials and DC programs. (Limited edition collectors disk)

That would be plenty of time to get permission for distribution of the trial versions and put together a nice collection.

And we'd have an entire year to decide what will go on the 2008 CD.  :D

Just for those that haven't seen my comments on digg on the digg page related to this article/post, I'll quote myself:

Digg is not, has never been, and most likely will never be a good source of links to the best the web has to offer. It is nothing more than a mirror of the ideas & concepts that are hot in the current pop culture. And that is what it is intended to be. It's all about what is popular without any regards to quality. And many people will vote for stuff based on what they think other people will think if they don't because they think their own views are not popular.

If it were possible to buy 1 share of stock in every company whose goods & services are featured in a link that appears on the front page, each time they make it to the front page, you'd probably become richer than Bill Gates, once you eliminate the links to anything related to Digg, Google, or Linux.

The best stuff never makes it to the front page because it's not hip & trendy. The likelihood of an article about cancer being cured by a small group of unknown scientists living in a small 'boring' country making the front page is much less than one where the headline would be something like "Digg member cures Brittney Spears of warts with the aid of Google and Linux".

Would anybody like to test my stock market theory? I mean a serious simulation...and code something that will do the job and publicly display the results/progress?

I am curious of what the results would be. (am I alone in my curiosity?)

The compilation im thinking of would include the following.

1.Its a bootable cd (i.e freedos or any similar free OS to offer some recovery and set up tools)

Except for that part, I think it's a great idea.

this idea isnt for a bootable rescue cd as i understand it,
it would be a cd with
ALL DonationCoder.com software, including skrommels utils, coding snacks, etc
Plus maybe some trial versions of software that has won our awards or minireviews or discounts?
Plus some bonus stuff maybe

THAT is more like it.  :D
This is a fun idea, especially if we can think of some more ideas of stuff to put on it.
It might also be something that we could send via post to donators who don't want to deal with torrent stuff, as a bonus gift.

Might make donating worth it especially if there was some other things on it that you can't get any other way...some 'special stuff'  ;)

Like maybe an MP3 of Cody's theme, for starters.   ;D
I would be willing to work on a nice screensaver for it....had an idea too.
I just need a tubable version of Cody's toy people.

Can anybody think of a reason why Spybot would have added crisscross.com to my hosts file? What I mean is not how it got there but why that site was added.

When that page wouldn't load for me, I went to just crisscross.com to try to figure out what the problem was...which is when I saw my stick-men and knew what it was. (I run a web server on my machine and have a page of stick-men like this one at the root)

Before this GOE idea came along, my method of getting things done was very simple:

Do what I want, when I want, for as long as I want.

My life was a series of "Keep-Me-Busy's"...and I got stuff I wanted to do done, for the most part.

With the huge range of interests I have it's not hard to have stuff to do to keep me busy.

But lately I feel like I am not getting anything done, and my desire to do things has gone out the window.

I think the more I think about getting things done, and try to get more done, the less I am actually accomplishing.

All this making and defining goals and putting things in writing...making lists of things that I don't even know what to put on the lists...it's frustrating me...and making me very unhappy.

Before all this started, my main goal in life was to not be bored...everything I did was to fulfill that goal...and it worked well for me, I think.

I wasn't bored...and I was about as happy as I could get, all things considering.

Now I have the attention span of a cat and feel quite depressed.

My email is backing up, my projects are not getting done, I am 3 pages behind in unread forum posts here, I have produced no new art, my doodle pad is blank, and all I want to do is sleep.

Maybe I already had the method that worked best for me and just didn't know it.

Maybe I need to stop all this and go figure out how I was doing it before and go back to it, because this just isn't working at all. It is having the opposite effect of what it was intended to do.

I miss my old more productive life.  :(

« Last post by app103 on September 19, 2006, 04:20 AM »
Pings are to a service like Weblogs.com which post a page of recently updated blogs.

It is a way of letting people know when you have made a new post...and people that frequent that site can discover your blog by seeing a link to it there.

It's a publicity & marketing tool.

General Software Discussion / Re: How do you organize your email?
« Last post by app103 on September 19, 2006, 03:18 AM »
I have multiple gmail accounts...each for a different purpose.

All mail from them is forwarded to my main gmail account, where it is labeled with what account it came from.

You know that you don't need to have separate gmail accounts for this? Just sign up for e-mail using (for example) [email protected], [email protected], [email protected] and then use the filters to set their labels. I heard about this long ago (probably on this site) but have just started putting it to use and it is very handy.

Someone mentioned that to me awhile back but my experience is that as soon as you add a '+' to your email and type it into a box in a webform it gets rejected as an invalid email address, so that wouldn't be very helpful.
5269
Like I said in the IRC channel:

  • You can buy a book on how to clean your house in 20 minutes.
  • You can read that book on how to clean your house in 20 minutes.
  • You can know how to clean your house in 20 minutes.

But that still doesn't make you want to clean your house.

Short of some heavy duty brainwashing of ourselves into thinking we actually like and want to do these things, I don't see a real solution.

Hi, April
I just look your site and I have a question for you:
The tools there seems very practical and useful. Are you thinking in expanding it to linux platforms?
Thanks

Hugo

Not exactly...at least not at this time...or not intentionally.

I think I should become a linux user first, before programming for linux...otherwise how would I know if it worked?

I don't think I am ready for linux yet...I still feel like I haven't settled into XP. It still has that 'new OS smell'.

« Last post by app103 on September 17, 2006, 03:42 PM »
I don't know of any icon sets that would be exactly what you described, but the Silk collection at FamFamFam.com is great...and published under a Creative Commons license that allows you to change them any way you wish.

There are about 1000 icons in that set and there are some other sets on the site, as well. They are in .png format, so you will have to convert them to .ico.

I was thinking that you could add the text you want to them. It is also possible that if you explained to the artist that created those collections exactly what you are thinking, that he may just make a set and put them on the site for everybody. He loves making icons and giving them away for free. He finds it very relaxing.  :D

Benjamin Franklin's 1752 paper, describing his lightning experiments with a kite, is now online (in .pdf format) for a limited time.

Included in this document is Ben Franklin's recipe for cooking a tender turkey.  :D

Note: When reading this document it will be necessary to replace many f-like characters, in your mind, with 's'. (I am sure glad we don't spell like that any more)
