Coding Snacks / Re: Internet wifi utility
« Last post by Contro on September 16, 2020, 11:42 AM »
The network tray icon is not really a good indicator anymore. Microsoft insists on only checking against their own servers to confirm your (wired) internet connection is OK or not. The amount of times I have seen that icon go from one state to the other, for example, while watching Youtube videos (without a glitch)...makes it unreliable.

Of course, there is some logic behind that connection state verification. And you might find the logic compelling. For me, the usefulness of that icon has diminished significantly. It used to be that the icon would flash whenever internet traffic was flowing. But that was removed in Vista/Windows 7. And with Windows 10 it indicates your network settings are incorrect when it cannot connect to Microsoft servers.

In Contro's case, the error message complains about a certificate mismatch. You are visiting a website that uses an incorrect certificate. There is a difference between the (domain) name of the web-site and the (domain) name configured in the certificate that this website uses. An error that is not related to being connected to the internet. The required certificates for such a check are available locally.

This is an error that appears to be generated by a form that Contro is using (to fill in some data, I assume). And such an error on a public WiFi hotspot is a very bad thing. Public WiFi should not used whenever you wish to transmit any important data, such as credit card numbers, your personal registration numbers that your government has coupled to your name, identification numbers of your official documents etc. Public WiFi cannot be trusted in any circumstance. The error you see in the screenshots is your computer warning you about doing something really dumb and potentially very costly (both financially and time-consuming).

Stop doing what you are doing when you see that error, especially on a public WiFi hotspot. If you are not on a public hotspot, you should also stop what you are doing and inform the site owner about this error. Only continue when they tell you it is fixed.

Using certificates is a good way to protect data being transferred over insecure lines, such as the internet. But only when those are properly applied.

The error window are using evernote app on my laptop. I detect with windows explorer.

When this window appear happen I have failed the wifi connection. Only appear when I have lost the wifi connection. It seems to me that evernote app try to connect with its server and show that message if not found.

So is a normal window of error and the wifi connection may be in general unsafe , but in this case is just because the wifi internet connection fails.

 :-* :P

I assume you don't know about a reliable indicator for my purpose.

I am using rainmeter some years ago, but I must see the desktop and difficult to detect the internet wifi quality if you are not uploading or downloading.

With uTorrent I quickly detect if the wifi connection is down.

"In Contro's case, the error message complains about a certificate mismatch. You are visiting a website that uses an incorrect certificate. There is a difference between the (domain) name of the web-site and the (domain) name configured in the certificate that this website uses. An error that is not related to being connected to the internet. The required certificates for such a check are available locally." . This affirmation is not correct. Simply the connection is lost and the evernote app tries to reconnect or something similar.

I observed this also recharging some webs. If the connection has failed I received the message a safe connection is not possible. But when the wifi is up those webs loads correctly.

Some webs like Sputnik News, Ali Express and a few others give me problems with this wifi connection. But I solve by another means. No problem with Amazon, Ebay and many others. I have observed some problems with the combination of Firefox and official or gubernamental webs. Sometimes may be a problem similar to that with Ali Express ....

Anyway. I continue trying to find a good app for establish when I am up or down....

Best Regards

I am using sometimes a public wifi.
With windows 10 home you never know if you have the connection active or not.
On my laptop.
Recently I installed Evernote and sometimes appear a window indicating a problem with a certificate and this seems a sympton I have not active wifi internet connection. But in the tray icon seems there is connection.

I Know is difficult an utility to reconnect to a free wifi with a necessary login, but I would like to know at least if I am connected or not.

Can you do that ?

P.D. the evernote window that appear from time to time....

Why the limit is 99 keystrokes ?
Since I've thought 99 would be okay as a maximal value.
If I need to undo more that 99 times I have done something wrong was my thought.
In my newest edition "SendKeys32" there is also that limit but you have a hotkey to invoke "Send again".
You find SendKeys32 inside N.A.N.Y. 2021 forum.

In that edition it is also alot easier finding correct target, I've heavily used filters  :-*

Enjoy
I don't argue with at the present time one of the few good programmers adding apps in the nany .....

Is a discussion about my opinion what I personally count as a programming language really neccessary?

To close this offtopic posts, I do admit everything is a programming language, batch files, scripts, html and whatever I might forgot to note.
Please accept my apology and stop arguing. Thanks.

Reminder, this topic should be about my freeware Elevation CheckUp.

Feel free to argue about how to code such thing in whatever language. I cant await to see how scripts can do such.

Peace.

AHK is not a programming language as far as i know
actually compilable language like AHK, or Autoit for that matter, deserves the name programming language.
Okay, if AHK is able to create a single executable file that has script included, i call it a programming language aswell, even if my mind say "no"
Like Trainer Generator (CheatEngine) that comes with LUA script support.

Everything that requires a interpreter (javascript perl php etc...) = no programming language, we have a deal?
I think we can't reinvent the language. Or the trends in internet.

AHK is a language.

Probably you are entirely right in suppositions, but for the common people ahk, autoit are programming languages.

@Yatom:
MailStore Home is free, at least it was last time I looked on their site. MailStore Server is indeed expensive, but not necessary for your purpose.
At work I have several mail accounts (from different providers) configured in my Thunderbird mail client. Each account stores its messages/settings/filters etc. into a separate folder. MailStore Home is configured to look through these folders.

So yes, it is possible to have MailStore Home work with multiple accounts on multiple domains.
Yes I do some years ago.

Now I wish to try :

https://www.mailstor...ucts/mailstore-home/

My main problem now with thunderbird and online servers (gmail, hotmail,....) is when the email goes marked as read....

it works it works !!!!1  :-* :P
But I need something else
AsusPortatil - 11_09_2020 , 19_47_27.png

Initially I thought only act in the active tab or in the indicated by the path in SendKeys window. But I can select in SendKeys any tab, and apply in the final tab selected. So the real tab is the selected tab in the case of pspad. And this is good for me...
Why the limit is 99 keystrokes ?

Yesterday I was thinking about reorganizing.
The most basic system of organizing in windows may be the folders.
I would say yes & no  :'(

Folders are meant to seperate products.
Organizing them for that Windows offers Libraries.
There you end up using "virtual folder names or descriptions" to quick jump/open/run/edit/whatever there.

Then may be yes or no....

@KodeZwerg if you start anything for this, please allow configurable hotkeys for sending the undo/redo commands.

Do you mean the keys to send should be configurable or that my program has a configurable hotkey?

Interesting if you can apply to any program.
What I would do works for every application, if target support ctrl-z or not, I can not pre-check, my app just send the keys to that application.
(same like you press in that target ctrl-z, either it does or dont, but bad things should not happen)

My guess is: key sender first public release will be delivered on monday.

:-* :P

Honestly I think you have the very best advisers for this program.

thanks Ath, thank tomos.

Thanks everyone . I will give my opinion as a final user.

While reading i was thinking about a do-redo app, but key sender is much better.
But key sender must be able to be configurable according to ath and its name. Not only for control+z combination.

1) how do I/you know how many Ctrl+z you want to do? If you dont know:

2) why not simply press and hold both Control and z keys until you get back to wherever you want? In most of the software I use this goes incredibly fast.
There are limited number of undo's: in this case Ctrl+z may no longer be of any use => versioning of some sort.
[...]
So I have ask with pspad and they give me an answer : Make a macro to undo.
And with the limit of the number of undone prescribed or allowed....
Question #1 and #2 still unanswered....

why not press Ctrl+z and hold until you reach your destination?
How do you know the limit of undo's is your destination?
Mmmmm. I am surprised.

I will try this of course. I usually repeat the combination, but not hold.

My last laptop was bought second hand with 8 hours of use. It was for a student, but he didn't approve the course.
The seller is in my town and seems to me a professional one.
when I ask for the operating system he tells me that he will give the license code. And that was a licence of windows 10 home from ebay-amazon-aliexpress at very low price. 5 dollars or so....
The true point is that i am updating the operating system with no problem.
I think there is some controlversial about this.
The laptop is a hewlett packard and comes with a DOS operating system.....
I think the people who understand well the pc buys in this way. They buy with a free DOS and then obtain a cheap license from microsoft.
I remember I have seen windows 10 pro in ebay.

How can i see the rights of any executable ?
-Contro

You are doing everything just correct. Just run the .exe to see results. In your case I can tell that my Application is not running elevated.

If you are confused "for what the heck do i need such", developers may know the issue of "with wich rights does my application runs others".
If you still have no clue, simply code an application that execute my application :-)

If it might help, I could program you a little tool.

Program that I have in my mind:
1. When starting, my tool show all processes, select one to connect to that process.
2. After a process is selected, enter number of loops.
3. click "Go", done.

What would happen is:
1. my program connect to any target you selected
2. my program send "number of loops" times a CONTROL+Z to target.
3. my program closes.

Would that be useful/solve your problem?
At the present moment may be a work to do.

Interesting if you can apply to any program. Or even undo any iterative key combination like control+Z

I think you have the last word now.

Is it interesting for microsoft word ?
For any text editor with control+Z and shift-control-z combinations ?
To go back in any repetitive task ?

Isn't this what File History is for?

In my case I create a network shared folder on the same computer, then use that network location as the backup location (rather than have an external drive plugged in permanently).

Then you can just: Right-click->Properties->Previous Versions
I'll take a look. Best Regards.

Undo/Redo support can only effectively be built into the software that is used/meant to work on a filetype. No way of adding that externally, other than implementing a local git repo and committing every change, and that is quite impractical.
This is also the reason the way Undo/Redo is implemented differently in different software, as not all file formats are maintained equally (flexible) in memory, by the matching software.

If you are rigth and seems to me so then I have to implement the script from pspad and for pspad.

I am trying in pspad forum but my level is not enough to follow the good necessary instructions. So I will have to be patient....

The versioning built into Microsoft Office....it isn't that useful. Not after you have experienced what real versioning functionality (backed by a decent versioning software like Git, Mercurial, SVN or even the venerable CVS and RCS) can do. Especially with text-based file formats (like .txt, .adoc, .md, .php, .c, .bat etc.) this works amazingly, once you get your head around the workflows such systems demand. However, for binary blob file formats (like .docx, .xlsx, .pdf, .png, .jpg etc.) such software is barely usable.

Still, Ath is completely right in stating that such functionality is major overkill for simple Undo's (Control + Z).

Yet the text
Do and undone with flexibility is better because we don't know how many keystrokes control+z are necessary until reach the target...
indicates to me that Contro might actually be in the market for a full versioning system. Git is free to download for Windows, Linux and Mac. And there are many free and/or open source Git clients available. Fork, GitExtensions, TortoiseGit etc. allow you to work much easier with the Git versioning system. You could even implement a web-interface for Git. One the more (in)famous ones is GitLab (Linux only!). Gitea is simpler to setup and maintain. It is also much more resource-friendly when compared with the GitLab software.

All of the above does require a good read of the installation instructions and Git clients come with their own manuals as things can get complicated quickly. A good grasp of concepts is essential before embarking on this route. Yet, if you mainly work with binary blob file formats, setting up a versioning system will be almost for nought anyway. But, as Contro mentioned in his post, he was working with PsPad, which is an editor for text-based file formats, so going for a Git setup might prove useful.

Git clients usually have a differential viewer built into them. So it is pretty easy to see the which file is needed to step back to. And if you are not satisfied with those differential viewers, you can get better ones for free as well. WinMerge would be one of the options. Git clients are familiar with this one and send the content you wish to review directly to that software without human interaction. Software like WinMerge also have more/better features for editing and marking differences between files.
Ow. The versioning inside word.

I use that in my projects to control changes. It's a nice idea.

But my problem now is in pspad.
I can use the backup copies, but if the change are quick and often sometimes I lose the control....

so I need to go back and forward quickly because is not confortable apply many control+Z combinations to arrive to the desired point....

Well, yes and no. Knowing the OP for a while tells me that this is way overcomplicated for the use he has, as for each change to be 'recorded' so it can be reverted, it needs to be committed, and my interpretation of his request, it seems that he would expect it 'as you type', like a built-in undo/redo, and not introduce extra keys to press or mouse-clicks to make.
Probably. (Although the request is very unclear.)
Filehamster could be an option. It appears to be in development (again). Also requires active input, but iiuc is a lot simpler than full versioning system.
:-\

Very interesting....

The answer from pspad may be...... use editorCommand() function and call undo as many time as you need

File scripting.rtf in the pspad folder or pspad helo

Command ecUndo or ecRedo

 :-* :P

Note : unfortunately I have not the basis to understand the above option or put in practice.

I am not versioning. I have a txt file with lines to be introduced in another program.
If I make a mistake and fails introducing one line or several and after continue adding more lines to the txt file I will have to recover the accidentally omitted line. Usually when I revise the txt file I delete the lines I think I have introduced. sometimes I make the mistake and continue adding lines after deleted the supposed introduced ones....
