Just  :two: : check for system restore points. Those usually eat too much space and can be trimmed to the last one. Additionally customize Recycle Bin size. It reserves 10% of each partition by default. Next suspect: temporary files. Last thing to check: Java and Flash. These guys can keep their older versions after update (I had 7 Javas here 300-400MB).

And regarding explorer thumbnails, I love them and have them turned on in Total Commander, but I do realize that they do slow the file listings down & Don has stated he wants to keep XYplorer as fast as possible so I can understand why he would have omitted the feature in the name of speed.
But what is the difference between "big icons" and "thumbnails" views then? I have always thought that if you choose thumbs you accept slowdown because speed is less important than preview in such case. There is also no need for writing own graphic libraries or specific files handling methods. Just use what operating system already has. Even explorer.exe does so.

I will end my rant saying that I had good laugh reading about "the art of naming files". Looks like it's not 8.3 compatible  :)

Well then it seems silly to complain that XY doesn't support it, does it not?  If the desire for such a feature is so small that no one wants to bring it up on the XY forums, how can anyone expect that feature gets implemented?  It's a bit backwards to think that Don (who is the only person behind XY) should scour the Internet looking for features to implement for people who "will never be" XY users, when he already has wishes of his own and his community on his to-do list.
Although I think Explorer thumbnails are not small feature I understand that it will not be implemented without an effort from my side to request it. I don't want to do it because XY is not "my" filemanager but does it mean I can't write about what makes it impossible for me to switch? Can't I point out missing features?

It might be stupid of me whining about XY here but I don't think it's the best way to post on all boards in the Internet for each software I found bad for me. I know I can do it but in the same way each software reviewer should do the same. Have you ever seen any software comparison charts? In perfect world, those should produce hundreds of posts across the support forums. Little silly approach isn't it?

I could miss something but since when the only opinions that matter are those from software boards members or long time users?

On the other hand: I believe that Dan knows about Explorer thumbnails. For me this was the simplest thing that came to my mind when I wanted to have thumbnails preview for some files. Own graphic library was the second. IMHO Don is 100x times better developper than me so it's rather impossible to think that he missed that.

I am browsing their board right now and must say that you're right:

descript.ion is crap compared to tag.dat.

To be fair this is a first preview isn't it or alpha.
Agree but I saw many things in the past that did not change after being marked as stable.

I.e. Opera synchronize feature still does not allow you to easily choose the way of synchronizing. More ranting…

PSI does now have accounts which continue through time and across machines
So what is it supposed to do except of just existing?

They are gathering your data, of course, but you can't get it anytime you want to? Where is your info stored if you can't see it after update? How can your stats be reliable if there is no "through time" support?

It is not "across machines" case. I wanted to see details from my applications on the very same PC. The same Windows installation for years. If it is "start once just for check" type of software then it definitely does not need to be put in background and keep running there. Or did it change during these 12 months?

Agreed.

When did they start advertising? 3 or 4 days ago? They should go with 2 weeks at least with teasers and press coverage… or something like that. They definitely have "premature e…" bussines model.

- We did it!
- ?
- We're done!
- What?

I am starting to believe that I would be better marketing person for Opera than the one they already have (smaller salary as additional advantage). Please, Opera, take me ;)

Nobody ever asked for PDN files. The place for bug reports and wishes is the XY User Forum... :)

1st: I'ts not about PDN support at all. This is only the example. XY should support getting thumbnails from explorer for all files. Instead of that: I have the feeling that it uses its own built in preview only.

2nd: I am not XY user and I will never be. Why should I post anything on their forum then?

I know it might be "being lazy" thing but I've tested hundreds of applications in the past. Each one of them had some flows. Should I create accounts for all of them somewhere? I find it not likely thing to do. I would rather take such steps only for the software I use the most. XY does not fall into such gap.

On the other hand: it is impossible to write PDN files preview. AFAIK these files are .NET serialized XML so the only ways to view their thumbnails are either to get XY to work with .NET or to get data from Explorer (using iShellFolder with IExtractImage interface). I think Explorer part is easier for XY (since it seems to be written with MS Visual Basic 5).

Last thing to say is that I believe that some XY board members are here too so they might write something on my behalf :)

With my love+hate Opera relationship I can only wish them the best.

Personally: I don't like an idea of sharing personal info via P2P. I also wish serious biting for their heads. That is the only way for them to not to repeat their desktop browser marketing scenario. I wrote it many times in the past: they were always advertising Opera as something for tech guys (call them chosen ones) and never understood that they should start with "Even monkey can do it". Mozilla did it perfectly ;)

I can confirm lags.

Sometimes XY seems to freeze when I am trying to scroll long files list. Probably due to retrieving files icons. It also stops responding when I click on any video file having preview panel ON. I know it has to load it but freezing whole XY?

I still find it strange not to see as many thumbnails as I want to. I.e. PDN files (from Paint.NET) can be seen in Explorer, Total Commander and many other file managers because they can use IShellFolder for getting the thumbnail. Even my Comparer does it but XY has problems.

Although I find it not so bad as I've expected. There are differences between XY and TC for sure but if I've never know Total… who knows ;)

I can't agree about adding Secunia tool. I've used it for a year and must say: that was stupid from my side.

First: resources consumption grows with time. After 3 months it got 300MB in RAM. Why? Reason, probably, below.

Second: I understand that I have IE control used in my BBCeditor but I need it for HTML. So it is understandable. Secunia uses IE to display anything! Come on, Secunia which is security related company uses IE with Flash to present simple data? What is wrong with using tables (or list view) for tables or even simple picture box for graphs? I find it lame. On the other hand, that is the most likely reason for taking so many resources.

Last: installation system is crappy. There is no possibility to use the same account for a very long time. During a year I had to update their tool couple of times and for each time it required from me to create new account. What for? I believed that I will see summarized info about my software since the beginning of using their tool. Wrong. It always worked like never been here before.

P.S. Something could change. Last time I had Secunia PSI on my HDD was little less than one year ago. Sadly, if I had to judge from screenshot I would say: it is still PITA.

I think it's yours decision to spam me :) I have nothing against if you neither have. I know it's burning issue so if you want to I can take care of it but please remember that I need all 10 contestants data.

On the other hand: IIRC usually Tuesdays (or maybe Thursdays?) were "the key" days…

What personal information? Maybe we should take the initiative and compile it and email it to him ourselves?
Standard key contains: first name, surname, postal code, city and country.

Please, re-download standard version and check again. It should be fixed now.

No version change since it is one-liner.

P.S. Probably debug.zip contains not all needed files. I will check it if there's still a problem after silent update.

1)
On each new run of BBCed
Click on 'file open' icon
Click on a .bbc file (see preview )
Click cancel -- unhandled exception
-cranioscopical (June 15, 2009, 04:38 PM)
I can't reproduce it here.

Can you try debug version (download and unpack to BBCeditor directory)?
http://fenixproducti...rs.com/bbc/debug.zip

Please, post error dialogue info (Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V should work IMHO).

2)
The open file dialogue doesn't seem to remember its size.
-cranioscopical (June 15, 2009, 04:38 PM)
Not "yet" :) I need to get more familiar with this control.

1.0.24 is out!

I am still cleaning up my code but few nice changes come with this release:
- new OpenFileDialog with preview feature;
- fix for files loading method (speeds up processing time);

I hope BBCeditor will be even better than before :)

Crap! I thought I posted more info here :(

Dear winners!

Christian had sent me confirmation email on Friday (12th) and asked what to do with "missing" user details (like postal code, city). I told him to ask you because I don't need to know your personal info and I've already told you, guys, that he'll ask by himself.

I know he is busy with beta stage but I don't think it will take longer than few more days to receive your keys.

Teasing more…

I've took a look where to start cleaning up my code and I saw something really disturbing BUT I fixed it and I am completely surprised by results:
- previously - opening 1MB file took up to few minutes;
- now - 4MB file opens in less than 10 seconds (and 20 more for preview to be ready)!

I can't believe how could I make so simple mistake I found :(

1.0.23 is ready!

I've fixed bug reported by urlwolf and moved parsing to separate thread. Code area should be more responsive while working with big files.

I have also an idea for new, nice feature so cross your fingers :)

Not only "has done". He is doing it all of the time. As soon as something new happen, he ads it right away.

Small advertisement :)

If someone is looking for "better" TC help file I recommend this one:
http://marmouset.ats...com/helptc/index.htm

Looks like standard one at first but it has more things explained. Long time user Clo is doing very good work.
