General Software Discussion / Re: Partition Alignment increases performance

I'm sorry but after years of experience with confirmation bias in perceptual estimates of performance, I'm really only interested in measurable, reproducible results.

Just for the sake of info, from everything I can find (and this was not something I knew so I was curious enough to look around a bit), SATA 3, AKA 6GB/s SATA, did *not* change the cabling at all. That being said, there *may* be differences in cable quality and *shielding* and due to the higher data rate SATA 3 is going to have lower tolerance for mediocre cables.

http://www.jdhodges....6gbps-cables-solved/

With that in mind, unless the cable you had problems with is a different brand from your others that work (not the 6GB/s one you have now, but any others you might be using), or otherwise seems like it may simply be a "low quality cable", I would tend to suspect it may actually be flaky/bad. Something to think about. The cables are cheap, may be best just throwing that one out...

I wondered that too Ren, but it seems like this deal would have had to be in the plans for a while (not that the MS+Skype deal wasn't, but...). So I dunno...

And Facebook fires back its first shot: http://techcrunch.co...tnership-with-skype/
Not that this is necessarily a direct response to G+ and Hangouts, after all it's a logical step and who knows if FB had advanced warning of what G+ would include (likely they did though). Still, it's going to compete directly with Hangouts and given Skype's even more proven tech vs. Google's for video and audio chat, it could be interesting. That being said group video chat is currently a paid feature in Skype. The only way they're really going to knock G+ down a notch in this department is if they make it free *on Facebook*. Woooah Nelly that'd be something. If they do that, it will tell you just how serious a thread FB sees G+ as (implying they likely paid Skype enough to make it worth their while).

Yeah, I think you're right - the way they treat customers and approach licensing probably has as much to do with how the licensing and purchase system is perceived as the system itself. I just know that I've heard complaints about modular systems being confusing in the past. But I do tend to like them myself...

Is Nola a Quickbooks level of app (or beyond) - the kind of thing a non-profit with a $4million/yr annual budget could/should use?

Came across this list of InDesign/InCopy plugins earlier today and I thought it might help solve some of these issues:

In particular Em Software with their product InCatalog (DB integration with InDesign):

Haha! That's adorable. I love the little ducking motion the bird does. I have no idea what he's trying to do - is that his way of nuzzling the cat? - but whatever it is, it's hilarious. G+ has got me saying +1! :D

40hz, to me the Nola licensing system with modular upgrades sounds great. But I can't help mentioning that I've seen lots of other modular systems turn into multi-tiered versions over time. Going from tiers to modules seems less common in my experience. I don't know if it's a business/profit motive for this (get more money by bundling features), or if it's user confusion that drives it. But I have to ask, do you think Nola's model appeals to us because we're techie and we "get" it? Or do you think it's also pretty intuitive to the average person as well? I know the app model with upgrades has proven very popular and successful, but purchasing items for a game is a bit different than purchasing functionality, as others have mentioned.

Ah I see what you mean Mark, interesting and I think somewhat accurate point. However when you say the similarities with FB are skin-deep I think it's the other way around; the similarity with Wave is skin-deep in that it has that privacy and collaboration capability, but fundamentally as a tool it operates completely differently from Wave. It has no collaborative document development component whatsoever, no history/wiki aspect, no simultaneous anything. What it does have looks a lot like Facebook, that's all there is to it.

That being said as I mentioned the point about it having the ability to be more private and collaborative is important. What I want to point out though is that the beauty of it for me is G+ can be used almost exactly like FB if a user desires (aside apps, games, etc. at this point, but I'm sure that will come). In other words you can set it up to share everything with the world or all your friends automatically. For those people that want to "over-expose and basically shout and show in public", G+ can still do that. In fact it can do it better than FB because of the point Deo mentioned where you can "follow" someone without having to have their consent (Twitter-like). At the same time the beauty of it is you aren't limited to FB's confusing and dysfunctional security and group systems. The Circles system seems to work brilliantly, is very intuitive (for me at least), and allows you as much or as little control as you want *on demand*. So you can choose on a per-post basis to share with whomever you want, but you can also setup reasonable defaults to avoid making posting too much of a hassle (e.g. if it required you to manually fill out who to share with each time).

I continue to be impressed and every additional person I know that joins makes it an even better experience. I want to do more Hangouts! So far the only successful one was the test I mentioned in my original review (this is due to lack of participants rather than any issue with the Hangout functionality btw).

Deo, good point about the "Following" thing being very Twitter-like. Yet another reason why this could take off if it can replace FB *and* Twitter. I don't actually see that happening, but I'm hopeful. ;)

Mark, I don't really see how G+ is much like Wave at all. It's very much like Facebook in fact, just better. :D

Yeah, the limit has been in place almost since it launched. But there was a loophole that appears now to be closed. Sorry to anyone who hasn't gotten in! I'll try to send out more invites if I get the option later.

Mmm, interesting idea that it may be limited to some countries. Though I'm trying it now with a friend in the US and he hasn't gotten an email yet either. They may have just plugged the hole, though it seems to me they should now have a message saying "You can't invite people to Hangout who are not part of Google+" or something. Oh well.

I was thinking about the Hangouts system more and I think it has a lot of potential for future expansion as well. Imagine taking the underlying group video and text chat capability and then there's the shared YouTube watching, now add shared web browsing (I think someone has done this before), shared white board, etc. It could become both a great, fun shared web experience (beyond just video) *and* a great collaboration tool. Very promising.

Another cool feature: there are notifications in the Google Bar I mentioned before. This could be pretty simple, click it and it says "You've got a new stream post from Bob, click here to read it". But they went a big step further. Clicking the notification icon gives you a dropdown showing your recent notifications (not just the unread ones), *and* if you click one it pops out a mini-view of the whole post (or whatever the notification is about), and you can *comment right there*. In fact you can do a lot of other things in that mini view too, and when you're done you just click the notification button to close it again. Never interrupts your work or takes you away from the other page. Again I really think they need to roll out an optional global "Google Bar" that follows you around the 'net (and no I don't want to have to install the Google Toolbar to get it!).

The Hangout feature I mentioned earlier is definitely a potential "killer feature", but also Huddles could end up being really popular for mobile users. It's basically dead simple group chat on your mobile. There are other apps that do it but this will basically work easily and quickly on every Android phone out there and it could gain a user base very quickly. It's great for planning stuff to do, meeting up, etc.

Deo, you're right about chats and private stream posts and how they can kind of work like direct messages (with offline support). The chat system is exactly the same as the one they've had integrated in Gmail for ages (GChat). That being said they still have GMail, and a full direct messaging system will happen I think, probably just invoking Gmail.

Regarding the "we're over capacity" message, I had that too before I got my invite. When I got the invite it still let me in even though it was saying that on their front page. So... *shrug*

I'm still attempting to use my loophole and it seems to be working *sometimes*.

Google+ is kind of an odd name for this product though. It makes it sound like it's an improved version of Google (the search engine). Possible alternatives:

Yougoogley
Gyougle
Yougle

:D

Sorry to keep spamming this thread. :P

Update: The Android app is pretty darn nice. It covers most of the functionality of the web system, is relatively intuitive, and fairly pleasant to use. I could definitely see using this more than the Facebook app. One of the coolest things is that the "Huddle" feature (which I didn't mention before because I don't know where it is in the main web app, lol; it's basically just group chat anyway, so maybe accessed through the Chat functions) works on your mobile phone. So you can easily setup group chats with people on the go. Great for planning a meet-up, figuring out where to go for dinner, or whatever.

Edit: Oh yeah, in terms of photo functionality, it has the expected built-in rotate capability (though nicely implemented), but also some basic photo editing functions like contrast and other filters. Kind of cool.

Also there's a grayed out "Send an Email" button on the home page under my profile picture. Hmm...

Ah well, best to wait then I guess. Again, I hope they scale this thing super fast, because the demand is here and now and the more people they can get on their, the more momentum it will have and the closer it will get to critical mass and wide adoption.

Did you click the link in the email I sent? I guess maybe they're not even letting in people with invites now. I can understand that. I'm seeing some slow down at times, heh. Hope they can ramp up capacity quickly though. I'm really interested to hear other people's thoughts!
