General Software Discussion / Re: software recommendations - photo/graphics editors

I say, what about "Minor Candidates"?

to which I say, they're ALL candidates :Thmbsup:

But when you actually want to do some "work", have you considered our own Vlastimil's Real World Paint? Maybe it's missing some killer feature you need from Corel p.s. Pro (the key word I picked up on was Pro!), but it looks solid.

agreed, this one is a real contender, though clearly I'm not the final arbiter

...I have basically the same problem as your wife - too much Awesomeness!...

so, you've met my wife?

(also, I'm not sure if you're bragging here or complaining, but no matter, we all have own crosses to bear ;D ;D)

I have NO idea what 90% of that does!

that's pretty much my reaction to most graphics tools.  Even if I think I know what they are I probably don't know how to use it :-[

Or, why not save a lot of trouble and keep the lens cap in place?

ever tried to put a cap on your wife?

safe to say the result will probably be a negative...

The people who play them are typically people who aren't going to do anything outrageous in real life. With some rare exceptions, people spending vast amounts of time indulging in a MMORPG usually are the same people that might talk big but not actually act on it.

wait a minute, I saw an article on line that said all game players are serial killers and/or mass murderers, lurking in darkened rooms plotting our massacre...

(and there should be enough keywords in that last sentence to get me well up the watchlists  ;D)

Post New Requests Here / Re: IDEA - how to capitalise the first word of every line
« Last post by Target on December 11, 2013, 06:24 PM »
this is a bit clumsy cos I just dashed it off quickly, but instead of entering the text into the script, loop through the files.

And instead of looping through each line, just work with the requisite strings (should be faster)

#singleinstance, force
setbatchlines, -1

fileselectfolder, myfolder, *%a_workingdir%

loop, %myfolder%\*.txt,0,1
{
tooltip, %a_index% - %a_loopfilename%
newfile:= a_loopfilename
stringreplace, newfile, newfile, `., _.,all

loop,read, %myfolder%\%a_loopfilename%
{
stringleft, xx, a_loopreadline,1
stringupper, xx, xx
stringtrimleft, yy, a_loopreadline, 1
tmp_.= xx . yy . "`n"
}

fileappend, %tmp_%, %myfolder%\%newfile%
tmp_:=
}

input files must be text, and output will be to a new file ie output from SOURCEFILE.TXT will be to SOURCEFILE_.TXT

listening to all this stuff I can't help wondering how much of this stuff is real and how much obfuscation

disinformation is as powerful as information in the intelligence game...

I just passed on the link in case it was of interest, it's up to the individual to decide whether or not they want to follow it up.

FWIW mostIwant appears to be an aggregate of free offers from other vendors (nothing fishy about that, most 'news' sites follow the same process), and I'm pretty sure chip.de is the site for a german electronics magazine (I don't read german, but somebody here can probably confirm).

just had a read through the kickstarter page (it didn't occur to me to look there for a product who's campaign closed over 12 months ago) and I can't say I put much store in the comments.

A lot of it sounded like foot stamping (where's my device? I want it now!!) though given the time lines that's probably understandable.

I also hadn't realised that they were still very new (seems they only started to ship around March?), so pretty much everyone is an early adopter and should be prepared for buggy releases.

FWIW it doesn't appear that the existing competition is much better (assuming the pebble isn't much chop), so maybe this is an area to watch (boom boom)....

Anyone here got any experience with these things?  (I expect nudone to be all over this  ;D ;D ;D)

They seem like a nifty gadget.  Not sure whether or not I'd buy one (though it's tempting), but I'd be interested to hear some real world feedback if anyones got any

if it was me I'd totally uninstall ALL the video drivers and the associated apps - clean out as much as possible, then shut down and reinstall the bare minimum (have a fish around and you might find an installer for just the video drivers)

advents calendar seems to be the promotion being run by mostIwant.

The german page probably doesn't help, but the offers still good :Thmbsup:

at this site http://www.mostiwant...ndar-2013-giveaways/

today's giveaways includes a full version (v13.4) of XYPLORER...

BTW, today is Cyber Wednesday, Dec 04, 2013, and you still (13 hours left) can get XYplorer's Lifetime License Pro with a 50% discount at BitsDuJour.

FYI there's also a full version giveaway here (apologies for the 'hidden' url - it was extremely long)

how many files, and how often do they change?

is this something that could be polled hourly or every xx minutes?

Found Deals and Discounts / Re: looking for MS Word freebie
« Last post by Target on November 26, 2013, 12:02 AM »
libreoffice portable is only 230M for the entire suite, which is probably less than MS word alone (I have it on a usb key), and it's free...

plus you can set it to have a white on black workspace (you can actually choose whatever colours you like)
544
instead of uninstalling stuff I'd probably use something like Autoruns (portable version here) and disable all the non essential items - you can go back and reenable stuff selectively to narrow things down if this helps.

If and when you identify the culprit then you can uninstall and update/reinstall

that's not an issue, several of the free suites will work with word (.doc) documents.

FWIW MS has attracted the ire of many users for the 'radical' interface changes between versions (most notably 'the ribbon'...)
546
I had a browse through and didn't see this mentioned, so...

have you tried booting to safe mode?  You probably wouldn't want to work there but as it loads a minimal amount of drivers etc it's a good way to (potentially) rule out a few candidates

General Software Discussion / Re: curious win7 file issue...
« Last post by Target on November 21, 2013, 06:16 PM »
interesting...FWIW I've been using this tool under win7 for almost 2 years and this is the first time I've encountered this

what are the rules around this?  There is a corresponding file at that location, though I'll need to do a little bit of testing to confirm this is the offending black hole.

I'd also be interested to know why that location wasn't found by my file searches (I'm configured to show all files)

General Software Discussion / curious win7 file issue...
« Last post by Target on November 21, 2013, 12:27 AM »
I wondering if any here has seen anything like this - this is a clean win7 32 system that's only just been rebuilt a week ago (don't ask :mad:)

I have a small scripting tool that I use at work to get data out of our systems, but yesterday I noticed some weird behaviour by windows.

I wrote a script for a colleague, but when I went to send it to him I couldn't find it...anywhere.

I could open and run it in the corresponding app, but it was invisible outside of it.

This morning I went back into the tool and saved it out to a different folder to see if I could see it (I could), however when I sent it to a colleague the file did not include any of the changes that I'd made (and yes, I did save it).  I could open the file and see my latest updates, but the version as received was several iterations behind.

any idea's?

who's watching the watchers? :o

is it possible to run a 'trial' in parallel?  (unofficially even?)

getting others on board before you tackle the roadblock can be a useful tactic, and it gives you an opportunity to speak from a position of authority rather than being defensive
