General Software Discussion / Re: Make Firefox 3 load faster
« Last post by dantheman on February 12, 2009, 07:43 AM »
Hi,

The main reason i was looking to make Firefox load faster was because of a theme (Silvermel) that stalling my browser (could type in url box, click links in toolbar etc for about 2 minuntes after start up, sometimes browser would simply go into limbo). The reason why i am absolutely certain now is because of the latest update that rendered my search engine box inoperative. It's not easy when you have about 20 extensions and half a dozen themes.

Thanks Mozilla team for this excellent browser!

Just wish any extension/theme would cease to come into conflict with similar or with browser.
Opera doesn't have this issue with widgets (but they have other issues of course).

Don't need minimize to tray anymore!  ;D

Wow! That was quite the writeup Magis esse!  8)

And so many extensions!  :o I'm surprised you don't have many more issues.

Anyway, i did a quick search and someone in another forum pointed out that the History being kept is set at 90 days!   Yup. So i changed it to 7, cleared history cache and cookies and, although it may be too soon to tell, everything seems to be pretty well in ship shape now.

BTW, "MinimizetoTray" isn't to be confused with "Firefox Preloader" (which has been upgraded since 2005). The latter would preload/boot with the OS, not "MtT"

@cmpm, ya, i kind of had that intuition.

"Minimize to Tray" is probably 'experimental' because it's been adjusted to FF3 and to work with Thunderbird at same time.

A cold start on my ol' notebook doesn't take away any snot.
For some reason it always takes about a minute before i can type in any urls or do anything else with it.
And i have about 20 extensions too.

I am humbled!  :-[
Honestly, i'm don't feel i contribute much here and feel more like tiny player in the midst of big league players.

BTW, welcome to the forum!

Oh! Before we go off the subject, Minimize to Tray is a nice addon for Firefox and Thunderbird.

@urlwolf,

Hey! Guess what?!
I decided to listend to you and just installed one of the Seamonkey Alpha's and it is just dynamite!

It picked up my Thunderbird configurations and data in a synch.
But i wonder why it picked up my IE favs instead of my Firefox ones?
People still use IE?

Seamonkey starts up like it's going to the moon and it's not even sitting on my taskbar.
The search field for the mail app is just superduper fast!

All and all, i'm really impressed since last time i tried it over a year ago.   8)

urlwolf,

Every time i've installed Seamonkey to give it a spin, it seems to conflict with existing Firefox installation.

f0dder,

Actually, i kind of liked the video idea.
I could pause it etc.
But i do agree with you that it's not the best method.

Video clips like these could be handy for nerds like me.  :-[

With regards to CPU usage, that could be true but with the improved start up speed i noticed, i guess at this point i'm ready to take the chance. Heck, it's almost just as fast as Opera 10 alpha!  8)

Most of the tweaks i saw in this vid didn't do much for me.
But a little further into the clip, there were a few i had never seen and so i decide to give them a shot. Working on XP Home SP2, this has made a notable difference for me.

Link to video.

Be advised that you may want to lower your speaker volume...

Almost forgot! It can be run from a usb device.

Picked it up from a LifeHacker tip today.

You are welcome sajman!

Almost forgot about that post.

A bit late in the game... but i'm on a small network and do have access to the web.
Why doesn't URLSnooper fail to acknowledge the way?

Not sure how to define this one but i just picked up the freeware version and i think it's a keeper.

Seeing that we're interested in small software programs i thought i'd share with you.

Found it here:

But you can get it from the programmers page as well:

Darwin,

These AV programs make me go... i won't tell you where but the other day i had Kaspersky on for trial and it identified Postsmile and EssentialPIM programs as slightly to more dangerous do have and nothing about this "paws" one.  :P
PCTools and ESET never identified these but did identify another. So? Which program should i trust?

Yup, no AV is purrrfect.
Sometimes i wonder how useful they can be...

Anyway, thanks again for the tip!

Hey Bro!

Never heard of this program but am tryin' now.
PC Tools AV spotted a problem at installation: "sequence: packed molebox", whatever that means.
I put it on quarantine and the program seems to be doing fine with plenty of options to discover.

Thanks!

After a fresh install, i tried Threatfire which just created havoc.

Fortunately everything was back to normal in a flash with WinPatrol.

Now i've been looking at COMODO's free firewall and AV:

Any takers on this one? Is it low on resources? Quick to update?

Have you tried www.newsgator.com (the one that you sync FeedDemon with)?
I find it slow to login but after that, it's not too bad.

Other than www.bloglines.com and that one, i'm afraid there aren't any other online feed readers.
At least, none that i know of.

I find Bloglines and GReader to be better in many ways than FeedDemon.

But mostly because you don't need to open or install another program (you're likely using your browser right?).

You can also use mouse gestures (lacking in FD).

The fact that GReader lets you view previous posts (greyed out) is pretty handy at times and don't see any delays with new posts coming about.

OpenOffice3 is supposed to come out very soon.
Apparently they're working hard at incorporating an email client into it.
Anyway, Kingston Office9 seems to be shareware... and OO will always keep getting better for the same price (free!) with no registration required.

Although quite new on the scene, Chandler might be your best bet as a free alternative to your Outlook needs.
546
Yabutt!

Not that i want to sound like an ESET fanatic or somethin, but if my memory serves me well (i'm not the one who signs the contracts) it has support for most (if not all) systems.
547
Darwin,

I guess there's no way to always keep our old computers (notebooks) at par with all the enhancements that are brought upon with the ever evolving technologies that most often require quite a bit more "juice".  :o

Anyway, if it's any indication of the way other programs behave, AVG8 Network Edition would take about an hour (if not more) to do a full scan of my notebook (4 years old).
548
My pleasure Darwin!

Let us know how it works out for you ay!

 ;)
549
Eset in Canada apparently grant a discount to non-profits.
With AVG8 taking the bloatware street our group plans on going with Eset as soon as our present contract is over.

I've been testing it for three weeks now and it is just fine. Low on resources and quite fast to update and scan. Very non-intrusive. Can't wait for the changeover!
550
Confronted to FF3, it simply pales out.

No extensions (can't live without Adblock and Firegestures!).
Poor bookmarking options (no keywords).

Not for me.
