« Last post by mouser on December 11, 2020, 07:47 PM »
Sometimes I forget to update the version number, especially on betas.
Here's what I have in my help notes:

v4.40.0 - Nov 23, 2020
[BugFix] Added code to move window on screen if it was last used on a setup where a monitor has been disconnected.

v4.39.0 - July 29, 2020
[BugFix] Metadata in image files could contain extraneous image after viewing image taken with camera or containing other unusual meta data.
[Improvement] New option to skip sending home keys on start of scrolling window capture (see Misc. Options tab).
[Improvement] New option to open newly captured images in default image viewer (see Post-capture options tab).
[Improvement] File multi-line metadata comments now separated by \r\n instead of just \n.

Living Room / Happy Thanksgiving/Friendsgiving 2020
« Last post by mouser on November 26, 2020, 01:28 PM »
Whether you celebrate Thanksgiving or not, it's always nice to take time regularly to remember what things in this world you are grateful for, and take time to be appreciative of those in your life.

I am grateful for this community.  I've spent the last couple of months working on my little youtube project, and I appreciate being able to take the time to do that and have others here making sure the place doesn't fall apart!

Follow up to this 2017 post, almost 4 years old -- We have filmed (and edited) about 30 hours so far on our new cooperative board game channel.. It will go live on Jan 1 :)

hmm this is a good question.. Let me go look at the code.. If there isn't an easy way to do what you want I will add it; I was doing some little tweaks to FARR today so I can finally work on it a bit.

I don't know a great answer to this, but one compromise option might be like this:

Use a javascript data table script, where you can provide your text data as json data embedded in the page itself.

The advantages of this are:

1. The text block data is clean data that you could use in a different way with any script or standalone application that can load json, and its not hardcoded as html text on a page, and it would be easy to convert the data to different formats later.
2. The data table script can let people do things like sort, search, etc.

I am trying the Logitech Mx Master 2 and 3.. Both are good enough.
The back and forward buttons on the Mx Master 2 are much worse than they were in pervious models -- they are tiny and on top of (overlapping even) each other.  The MX Master 3 are much more reasonable.  For that reason alone the MX Master 3 gets my vote by a mile.

The wheel is very strange how once you start rolling it it just goes on forever.. I'm still getting used to it, but I could take it or leave it.

If the battery life holds up I'll be satisfied.

Living Room / Web service to let supporters vote rankings
« Last post by mouser on November 05, 2020, 02:07 PM »
As some of you know, a friend and I have started working on a youtube series where we discuss board games.

We were thinking that we'd like to have a giant list of potential games (1000s) and let the audience (or just patreon supporters?), help decide which games we review in which order.

So that requires having a page which lists all the (1000s of) potential items up for consideration, and let's people indicate their top favorites (maybe like rank their top 10 or something), and then lets us see which gets the most votes or shares.

Does anyone know of any web service or wordpress plugin that does this easily?

Maybe this is just something that any easy voting plugin could handle.. Or maybe there are some features that would be especially useful for doing this kind of thing where you are asking people to help rank choices and then striking items off the top of the list as you do them..

I guess that's the thing that makes me think this is somewhat specialized requirement, in that it's not simply a one-time poll, but rather a list that we will over time be taking completed items off of.. where when we take an item off the list, people should be able to re-allocate their vote?  Or maybe we need some way for people who vote on an item that gets completed to then have less weight on subsequent votes?

It's an interesting problem in general -- the best way to let supporters help rank and choose items to do from a list where you are adding and removing items constantly... Ideas welcome..

I have come to view AVG as a loathesome bloated blight.. I strongly advise against using it.  It has become ever more painful and confusing to use over the years.

On a related note.. For the last weeks I've been having some real frustration with my mouse pointer stuttering on the screen as I move it.. It feels like its the computer being slowed down by something.. Like real laggy stuttering that happens when some cpu intensive app might be running.. OR possible dirt in mouse, etc.

Well, let this be a warning to all of you.  After a couple weeks of frustration I bought a short usb(3) extension cord so I could move my wireless mouse received away from back side of computer and closer to me, and problem 100% solved.

I would have figured this out if the wireless mouse hadn't always worked flawlessly for many years.

So I'm thinking maybe the background transmission interference has probably gone up recently, either from the equipment in my house or in my neighborhood.. Or maybe something else making the transmission less reliable.

Either way, I would highly recommend getting a short usb extension cord so you can move your wireless mouse receiver around a bit, and don't assume just because you can waggle your mouse that the communication is perfect.

ps. It would be nice if the mouse driver for logitech/ms could report when it was having trouble efficiently communicating with the mouse.

Living Room / When rubber (computer mouse) gets old and sticky, what can you do
« Last post by mouser on October 27, 2020, 08:54 PM »
Have experienced this quite a lot recently, where what was originally some matte rubbery area on a computer mouse or something similar, is starting to deteriorate(?).. it gets sticky and unpleasant.

Is there a solution to this?  Attempting to wash it with soapy water does not help.
Maybe put oil on it?

Maybe there's a preventative way to stop this from happening in the first place?

I have a Logitech Performance MX mouse that I love the weight and feel for so much that I keep using it despite it acting up sometimes and worst yet it consumes batteries like its being used to power a nuclear reactor.. Seems like I get only a couple days use of the batteries before I have to recharge them.  Yech.  Seems like they have a new replacement for it I guess I will splurge for.. Buying cheap mice is always disappointing, they feel to light.

I recently picked up a Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 ($500); one of the things that has surprised me the most was how comfortable it is to mark up pdf documents with the pen while reading.
This is one of the things I have struggled with the most when trying to move from reading physical print books to ebooks -- I miss marking up the margins and underlining/circling important parts with a red marker.
I did not expect to use the pen of this tablet at all, but I find it is quite satisfying -- even if it is only a psychological thing being able to mark up the document :)

Oh that's an interesting observation.. It may be a windows system thing..  I wonder if I could work around it by just tweaking the date/time ahead by 1 second..
