Thanks 40hz.

I have several scripts (WordPress for testing, etc) running in var/www and need to be sure not to lose stuff otherwise Home (my files) directory is enough for me, the local software I can always reinstall without needing to back up really.

What's a good backup utility (except the built in one, don't ask...) to make it pain free to move up from Mint 13?

General Software Discussion / Re: CCleaner 5.0 Beta?
« Last post by rgdot on November 25, 2014, 11:56 PM »
CCleaner v5.0 is now ready for download! You have been testing the Beta release of version 5 in your thousands since we announced it last week and we have loved hearing all your positive feedback on the fresh new design!
CCleaner 5.0 sees not only a brand new interface, but also significant performance improvements. We've optimized the internal architecture for better performance, added Google Chrome plugin management and optimized the automatic update process for our Professional users.
We're also close to finalizing a new Disk Analyzer tool, which will allow you to identify and drill down into the types of files taking up the most space on your drives. Watch this space for more information!

Been on it since early on. Not bothered by lack of features, just that these are useful if lots join early on. Waiting for any social thing to become active is not really attractive anymore.

With that said https://ello.co/rgdot :D

"Test environment"  ;D

Let me destroy the registry of my XP in a VM or spare PC?

EDIT: Before laughing at me, what I mean is, testing things like this is not the same as testing the beta of Photoshop for example .... in my opinion

Interesting

The next Firefox default search engine: Yahoo Search

Google Search has been the default search engine of the browser for the past years with Google paying Mozilla money for that privilege.

While Mozilla put the money from the deal to good use, it made it dependent on that money at the same time.

Ever since the deal was announced (first back in 2004) I had a major concern: that Mozilla became too dependent on Google and that Google would not renew the deal.

Mozilla announced a new strategic partnership with Yahoo Inc. that makes Yahoo Search the default search engine in the United States on mobile and desktop platforms.

doteasy.com I used in the past. My experience was good but I eventually moved the domain in question to US based registrar.

Stupid question but .... clicked the gear icon?

Mine does look like that and I don't have anything installed to make them like that. I was under the impression that those are/will be the tiles we have been talking all along

The difference is simple and should not need to be spelled out. However ....
In this case corporations have profit to add/make by adding restrictions not removing them. Saying that in this case the same applies to gov is being intentionally anti gov.
540
Once upon a time, there were browsers with ads in them, in which you could pay to have them removed.

  • Opera
  • CrystalPort (very innovative tabbed IE based browser from the late 90's)
  • Plenty of others

But they all either disappeared or got away from that business model. I believe Opera was the only survivor from that era. (A shame, because I really liked CrystalPort and still miss some of its features)

And now here we have Mozilla that hasn't learned from the past and the mistakes of others, creating an even worse set of options with Firefox: ads or screw you, use something else...not even a paid option, without ads.

As online business models go one can say lots of things of course but regarding Mozilla I wonder how long their Google relationship will last (I guess you all know how much of their income is Google based?) Tiles is probably the wrong way but if they are smart they have been looking beyond Google because even if it does last for a while longer it stopped being healthy once Chrome came along

May or may not be practical for NANY  :tellme:

Offline tool to create infographics then export to image or other possible formats.
Portrait or landscape layout chosen then user can import images, choose from a variety of effects, bars, charts, icons and other shapes, add text, move to position and export. There are online tools that do this like infogr.am that I know of.

N.A.N.Y. 2015 / Re: NANY PRE-RELEASE: Dedicated Windows client for Slack
« Last post by rgdot on October 28, 2014, 07:36 PM »
This might be of interest:

The WordPress project is testing out Slack as our main real-time communication platform, replacing IRC and ad hoc Skype chats. When compiling a list of things people liked about our existing options, it was obvious that Slack was all of that and more, including:

Open for everyone
Friendly user interface
Easy asynchronous conversation
iOS and Android apps
Powerful customization abilities
Excellent search
Wait, replaces IRC? Yes. WordPress has always used Freenode for its real-time communication, and we’re especially grateful for what Freenode and IRC have done for Free and Open Source Software projects.

Android wifi with credentials doesn't auto connect?  Thought that's always the case, I know of people having the exact opposite problem, connecting when they don't want to and having to uncheck settings/'forget' connections

Actually I would feel more secure getting the program from Softpedia or FileHippo than the author's site. Certainly when it comes to bigger software like Avast for example.
