They are oddly secretive about their funding sources to date. Possible reason why below.

They will definitely need to be very careful how they set things up since non-pastoral and/or paid counselling (and related mental health services) are strictly regulated (and require a license) in many places. I don't see state regulatory agencies that license clinical psychologists and licensed social workers giving 7CoT carte blanche to just start offering services online. (And despite what some 'free market' warrior types may think, those regulations are in place for very good reasons.)

That was why I was wondering if they were going to do paid referrals, sort of like a more social 1-800-dentist, but with therapist referrals.

I used to have the same problem with my kitchen faucet, having to constantly replace the washers...until about 10 years ago when my new landlord replaced the faucet with one of these:

415Ll1tPniL[1].jpg

I don't know what brand he bought but it only cost him $20 and I have not had to change a washer, since.

He explained to me that the need to constantly replace the washers was caused by a worn seat, and the faucet I had was so old that it was impossible to find replacement seats for it. Therefore either he replaces the whole faucet or I would have to continue to keep replacing the washers on a regular basis, and eventually even that would not work any more, and the faucet would end up leaking, even with brand new washers installed. So, he can either replace the faucet now, or later. He chose now, and 10 years later, I am so glad that he did.

Not trying to be cynical, but what are they selling? Or what do they plan on selling? Who is the paying customer and what is the product?

This is a for profit company, with investors. People don't invest unless they think they are going to make a profit. And profit doesn't come from pouring in investment cash and having no plan for generating income from something else.

So, they must plan on selling something, whether it's

  • ad space
  • user info
  • additional services
  • offline therapist referrals
  • something else

I am just curious how they plan to do it. And I saw nothing on the site that hints at the answer.

« Last post by app103 on December 11, 2014, 01:58 PM »
The bridge that would be required would be something that detects a url in an editor or whatever and calls BrowserBunch with the url as argument.

I think you are making it a little more complicated than it needs to be.

You just need an executable that can be set as the default browser, whose sole purpose is to pop up a panel of options and then pass the URL to the browser chosen by the user.

Set as the default browser, it would pick up anything that isn't a link clicked within an actual browser. It wouldn't even need to be running in the background at all times, as the system would launch it as it passes it the URL as a command line parameter, as needed.

(Sigh). Easy on the eye, but hard on the grammar. So much for crowd-sourcing of knowledge...
At least the spelling is OK.

Oh, and that's a grammar error that gives me the same physical reaction as nails on a blackboard!  :o

.. so you must cringe a lot when you're here?   ;D

I cringe a lot, in general. I don't keep track of where, any more.

After watching these 2 videos, I went ahead and bought the game:

Yeah, an impulse buy, not something I usually do with games/software, and for good reason.

Unfortunately, I can't play this on my laptop. Sound is crackly, video is choppy, and mouse movement is very jerky. And that is just on the menu screen.

I'll have to wait till I get my desktop PC working again and try it on there. I am really hoping it works out better on there, otherwise this game will just be another example of why I don't like buying games I can't try before I buy, and why I shouldn't buy on impulse.

Looks really interesting. Unfortunately I can't run the trailer for some reason. It refuses to load in FF and crashes completely in Chrome. And this is on an i5 machine with 8Gb of RAM and no other applications running. Doesn't give me the warm fuzzies. Hopefully it's just a server-side time-out issue due to volume. I had to go over and watch it on YouTube.

Their website crashes my Pale Moon.

General Software Discussion / Re: Tips for dial-up Internet Speeds?
« Last post by app103 on December 05, 2014, 12:03 PM »
Kudos to App for whatever that thingie is called from Google.
Yeah, the results look a little weird, but I can see that could be useful in a pinch not for just slow internet speeds, but maybe for a few of the sites that have gone too script heavy.

It was supposed to be for use by mobile phone users when they hit sites that don't work well on their phones, formatted to fit their smaller screens, and without all the scripting their phone might not support or be able to handle. I discovered it a long time ago, when looking around for stuff I could use with my old Pocket PC.

But the whole idea of it translates well to those on old slow computers and/or on slow connections, which is why I made frequent use of it back in 2008 when I was stuck using a seriously outdated machine. Funny how something meant for modern devices could work so well at giving an old pc from 1997 a new life.  :)

Another option is to get a copy of the old Sam Spade app and use its Safe Browser feature. But you'll need to be able to mentally render the HTML yourself.  :D

For pure text based browsing: Lynx
 (see attachment in previous post)
It will drive you nuts though and it doesn't understand HTTPS, (not without adding the OpenSSL libraries).

And, Comodo Dragon still has per site image blocking.

The privacy bar in K-Meleon makes it quick and easy to toggle images (and other things) on/off without having to dig through menus and options panels. Also has a user agent switcher on it, although I can't seem to get it to work in the latest version. It's supposed to have a popup menu when you right click the button for it, but it doesn't seem to want to show on mine.

And running it in this type of text mode is a lot better looking than Lynx...and it does understand HTTPS.  ;)

I spent the better part of 2008 on an old Pentium I with 64mb RAM, accessing the internet over 33.6k dialup, so I did learn some tricks to help speed things up.

If you are not using a script/flash/ad blocker, you should.

And for general purpose browsing, when you just want to see the content and will not need to login, try this:

prefix URLs with the following: http://www.google.co...t/n?_gwt_pg=0&u=

It's not always the best experience for every page, but for most pages, it does work well.

You can grab the bookmarklet for it at the top of the sidebar on my old Snailware site. Use it whenever you hit a site that is taking too long to load. ;)

You can also try using the mobile versions of sites you visit often. A lot of them do work on the desktop. You said the basic HTML interface for Gmail loads, but have you ever tried the even more basic one? I bet it will load a lot faster.  :D

For some sites, you won't be able to do stuff like that without changing your browser's user agent to something it identifies as a mobile device. And for many sites, there isn't a separate mobile version. They have opted to just have one version for all, and use a responsive design to make it fit small screens (resizing your browser window before you visit the site might help force those sites to load smaller, lower res images). A good user agent to use would be any iPhone one, since any site specifically designed for that device will be free of any flash content.

For blogs you like to visit often, try subscribing to their feed in a desktop RSS reader. This can be one of your best options, if the site provides full content in their feed. Just be sure to set your rss reader up not to automatically refresh the feeds. Do it manually, as needed, one feed at a time, as you are about to read them. Otherwise, all of your bandwidth will be sucked up by your feed reader and you will have nothing left for anything else.

But if you have the skills, the equipment, and the software, what reason can you give not to use stenotype? Isn't that like advocating hunt & peck over touch typing?

Does phonetics cover everything that you would need in a programming environment... really?  Especially with the use of templates and snippets and shortcuts.

She did go into that in the video, explaining the concept and usage of a personal dictionary.

I am not entirely sure I could code at 240 words per minute, even if my brain were directly connected to my computer via a thought to text engine, unless it could translate visual thought concepts.

But that would be in the realm of sci-fi, where you could create a UI and make it work, by just imagining yourself using it.  :D

Currently, I'd have to say the bulk of my development time is not spent on actual typing of code, but rather testing, debugging, and research, and I don't see learning stenotype shortening the time spent doing that, by very much, even at double that rate (480 WPM).

Until you realise that you can simply program naked and do less laundry...

You might not want to do that on a leather, vinyl, metal, or finished wood chair. Some surfaces should not have prolonged contact with skin, especially in summer. Think diner booth + shorts + peeling your upper thighs off when it's time to leave and you get the picture.
