Living Room / Re: Postcards from DC members
« Last post by Veign on October 28, 2007, 07:07 PM »
There is something about a postcard with the postal marks and stamps from various countries that makes it something hard to replicate through an image file.

I saw it as something mouser could have from its members as a tangible item from its members from around the world.  Something that could be made into a very colorful mosaic image or whatever.

I thought of it as I was flipping through the many postcards I received from users of my software.

Maybe instead of scanning a high quality image could be taken of the postcard laid out on the floor - one large mosaic...

I mean real postcards that would be sent to a snail mail address.

I did this with making some of my software postcardware.  Very interesting some of the postcards I received.

Living Room / Postcards from DC members
« Last post by Veign on October 28, 2007, 06:17 PM »
Just wondering how feasible it would be to have a 'show us your city/town' area where DC members can send in postcards that shows what makes their little neck of the woods unique.  These postcards can then be scanned into to a single location where people can view them through DC.

Kind of like PostSecret but without the secret:

Just a thought for something to do during mousers hiatus.

Living Room / Re: Completely New Amazon.com Interface - Spotted in the Wild

Cool.  I see it when I go to Amazon.com.  About time if you ask me...

TucknDar,
Something is very wrong since I don't control the install dialogs.  I use Visual Installer which doesn't let me control down to what a button says.  If the button doesn't say 'nex' then I can only think of two things: 1) The dialog box is cutoff and not displaying the entire width or 2) You have something on your system that is changing it.

Can you post support issues here (I will work through it):
http://www.veign.com...index.php?board=29.0

I see you posted under v2.6 which is an older version.  Look at the posts above about downloading the 3.0 version and see if the problem persists.
532
Can you send me that first font.  There is some issue with it and I need to see what it fails to go any further.

Basically Cfont Pro has 332 fonts internally cataloged but reading from that catalog (its a collection class) its having a problem.

Does the drop-down in the property window, the drop-down in the toolbar and the Quick Detailed view all show one font?

also, can you post this in my support forum:
http://www.veign.com...index.php?board=29.0
(would like to keep all support issues in a single location)

Updated my post about making sure you get the latest version - Download.com
will take some time to get the latest and greatest version.

Cfont Pro is a kind of pet project of mine that was the first application I ever released.  Its a font manager that does everything you need in a highly customizable interface.  Its free so there is no harm in checking it out.

Whats New:
  • Now supported on Windows Vista
  • Redesign Font Browser to include an always displayed Folder Browser
  • Brand new Quick Detailed Viewer lets you see all fonts with key information in a single location
  • New Zoomer tool lets you see the details of any font and any character
  • Added a Property Toolbar to let change some properties instead using the Property Window
  • Glyph viewer lets you see how a font character is constructed

Check it out at:
http://www.cfontpro.com/
--or--
http://www.veign.com...cation.php?appid=101

Any problems or issues please use the support forum at:
http://www.veign.com...index.php?board=29.0

To make sure you download the latest version:
On the Cfont Pro download page use the 'Direct Download from CfontPro.com' option at the bottom.  The download locations and alternate download locations take some time to get the newest version.

Yup.  Unofficially  :)

Find And Run Robot / Re: Latest FARR Release v2.107.04 beta - Sep 23, 2012

Don't spread the word, this is still not yet ready for primetime release.

Once you give the word I would love to do a blog post on this release.  Just give the word...

There is some comfort in knowing that I no longer have an alpha software installed on my development computer even though it was stable and never gave me any issues.

Thanx for the update.

General Software Discussion / Re: Veign's Top 15 MySQL Tools
« Last post by Veign on October 22, 2007, 10:04 AM »
ps. I've used the free MySQL Workbench and found it cool but not really usable due to being in unfinished beta stage for too long, with bugs that are insurmountable.

I put in some information about Workbench but should have put more.  Workbench was a continued project from DB Designer.  The original developers moved to create MySQL Workbench and stopped working on DB Designer.  Then when Workbench stopped moving forward another group of developers picked up on the open sourceness of DB Designer and started the DB Designer Fork.  DB Designer Fork is much more current than both DB Designer and MySQL Workbench.  This is the application I have been using for some very quick database reverse engineering (they include a tool).

steeladept,
Item #1 I already include.  Mine usually contains things like hosting and domain name

Item #2 - Where would something like this go?  In the TOS or at the bottom of the Scope of Work section?  This is something I would like to add and thanx for the advice.

Living Room / Re: release important information after your death with this service
« Last post by Veign on October 21, 2007, 09:48 AM »
why not put  it in your will

A will still would take someone with knowledge of 'doing things' and could require a higher level of knowledge of who you are giving it to.

A service provides an immediate action with no interpreting of a will or going through escrow.  Plus its much geekier to have an online service distribute your electronic assets.

This is in an area of something I have been giving a lot of thought to for the past several months.  What I have been thinking about is all the websites, software and other internet assets that would be lost due to its owner death.  How do you preserve assets that others, in your family, may not know what to do with when you die.

I think of it with my stuff.  I have 8 online application, 5 full blown websites that support a specific community, 7 freeware applications and many code samples in my dev library.  What would happen to this stuff if something happened to me.  I would want the stuff passed along to someone else who I thought would keep the stuff alive, for free, as I intended.

I thought there was a need for a web service where keys (passwords), files (source code) and instructions where kept in a highly secure, encrypted state with a list of other users who would get parts or all of the information upon something happening to me.  The service would be marketed as a way to preserve the assets of the internet and keeping the original developers intent alive even after their death.

I really don't like the "I will try and contact you and if you don't respond then you are dead approach" since I would be asking people to entrust very sensitive information to the website service.  I think a two-key process would work better where both keys have to be turned to mark you as dead.  Then you can give out these keys to people within your family or, for a simple charge, put the keys within the service who you turn the keys upon proof of death.

Anyway, just another though in my head which will make my Ideas section of my blog. (actually going to repost this information there).

I also thought that was

The guy is not exactly bright, isn't he? He uses the same name as the collection he is digging, if it made it to the front page, people would bury it for blatant self promotion. That won't happen, Digg users are interested in more constructive themes... :-\

I also thought that was funny.  I almost wish it would hit the front page.  He would get ripped apart.

It would almost be good if it made the front page as the comments would be read by everyone.

He won't last.  I'm sure the FTC will be on his case once people start realizing what's going on with the 'Free' software and start complaining.

What's strange is my post is no longer in Google's Index.  Blog backlinks will force Google to re-index it and hopefully we can make it stick.

The only way is to have backlinks with CDEarth in the anchor text. You can Digg it - might help.

Thanx!

Here's another company owned and run by the same guy behind ThinkAll and CDEarth:

Will you get what you pay for?  Not sure and I wouldn't want to find out based on the business practices of the other two websites.

Seems like the blog post is getting buried in Google and all the Press Release's released by CDEarth are taking focus.  We need to get this on the first page of Google so users are warned about whats going on.

To do this consider adding a link from your blog back to the blog post.  This will help keep in fresh in Google and spread the word.

if we can do what happened with ThinkAll where my blog post took over the number #1 spot in Google, then people will be warned.
