technical note
I found the second one behaved differently depending on context -- if you do it right after the first, it doesn't appear particularly interesting, but done immediately after starting up the editor (and in some other contexts), it gives the "desired" effect :)

Another option, if the USB port on your device supports OTG (USB On The Go), is an OTG flash drive like this one.  It has a micro USB male plug in addition to the regular USB A plug and supports USB 3.0 on the PC side.  You can also buy OTG cables for less than $10 that allow you to plug any USB flash drive into the Android device.

I was going to start another thread on the following (and may be I still will ;)), but if you'd like another fun rabbit hole that happens to use KDE, perhaps NixOS would be interesting to check out.  It appears to support XFCE (as well as other things), but KDE appears to be more the default.


I've been using its package manager, Nix, on top of Gentoo mostly with happy results, but am also testing NixOS via VirtualBox.

Unfortunately, NixOS is also systemd-based -- may be someone will try to produce a version with OpenRC at some point...

BTW, aren't there also the Window Manager -> Keyboard and Window Manager Tweaks -> Accessibility -> Key used to grab and move windows sections?  Perhaps there are other nooks that contain keyboard-related things...IIRC, it's no better in most other non-XFCE things.


I wonder why more desktop environments/managers/etc. don't go for using the Windows key to stay out of application key usage territory...seems like such a nice solution.

Had some success building Vault 3.

May be there's an easier way, but here it consisted of:

1. Download the source and extract it
2. In Eclipse, File -> Import -> General -> Existing Projects into Workspace -- removed check from paid version and chose to copy projects into workspace (note the error)
3. Visit the Vault 3 tree's Properties -> Java Build Path -> Libraries tab and note down all of the missing jar files
4. Open a terminal and navigate to the CommonCode directory in the workspace, then build CommonCode.jar by issuing the 'ant' command.  The result should be CommonCode.jar in the deploy subdirectory.
5. Use an appropriate search engine (and check your local file system) to obtain/locate local copies of the other missing jars
6. Update the Libraries tab from an earlier step regarding the now-should-not-be-missing jar locations (for CommonCode.jar select the location corresponding to the result of the previous step)
7. Have an appropriate (real or virtual) device ready, and choose Run from the Run menu (and if necessary specify Android Application or some such).

The main drawback to me about many of the existing options is the key sequence collisions and what trouble is involved in minimizing such things.  I've been using fluxbox as it was relatively easy to become collision-free by changing ~/.fluxbox/keys to use the Mod4 modifier (Windows key here).  The result is that window management here makes use of the Windows key, and other things don't (at least for the most part).

Gothi[c] also hacks on fluxbox so that seems a plus :)



I like XFCE but I haven't figured out an easy way (yet?) to achieve a similar small-number-of-collisions end.  I tried Openbox for a while but had difficulty in working with the switching among and control individual windows functionality that typically is available via taskbar-ish UIs (this was after trying a variety of 3rd party "panels").

There is a well hidden setting in most phones/tablets that let's you switch from MTP to Mass Storage:
Settings>Storage>Menu Button (the one with the three dots top right corner)>USB Computer Connection

Sounds interesting!

I've navigated accordingly and can see a list that has some entries.  One of them is MTP and the other is PTP -- it looks like I can choose between one or the other...but on the surface of it, it doesn't look like either is Mass Storage.  I've tried this with two tablets with the same results and on one phone the menu button doesn't bring up a menu, unfortunately...

I've been using OI Safe, along with OI Notepad, on my Nexus 7 tablet for months now, and I'm very happy with it.  One thing I like is that I can have both encrypted and unencrypted files on OI Notepad, so in addition to the encrypted files, I can use OI Notepad as an everyday text editor.

The only solutions I've found was to make my desktop computer an FTP server.

I've done the reverse too, make the phone behave as an FTP server -- FileExpert and other Android apps provide this functionality.  Not too happy about unnecessary wireless connections or having to look after more servers though so I try to avoid this most of the time.

That works for some phones, but not all.  IIUC, many phones now implement MTP, and unfortunately, I haven't had good results with that.
