Post New Requests Here / Re: GridMove Portable 7Lite
« Last post by jgpaiva on May 18, 2010, 10:23 AM »
hi,

I see you've been busy :)
Yes, autohotkey is easy to use. But be careful, its usefulness is very limited, if you want to learn some language, you'd be better off with something like python.

Regarding the color, you must change the background color of the window which creates the transparent overlay.

I'll have to take a good look at your code to extract the fixes to add to the main GridMove branch ;)

From what I remember, I disabled the resolution change because people had trouble with it being constantly changing, but I can't remember why.
I think it only happened to few people, but it was really annoying and made gridmove unusable.

Yes, I imagined something like that might happen. In win7, the height of the titlebar of a window changes with a few things.

I have split this topic, in order to reduce the entropy in gridmove's topic ;)

Is 65pt a good value for you? doesn't it inadvertedly start when you click other buttons at the top of windows?
530
thanks for your reply. I hope there is no serious trouble going on in your life.
No, no problem. I'm just getting my PhD and it's been crazy with work lately.

It SEEMS the problem is fixed. Will try in allday use and post here. :)
If it solved for a few windows, then it probably got solved for all windows, great!

I´m irritated a little bit that the new .exe file is only 216kb since your .exe was 450kb?
Why? Is that something to be worried about?
No worries, that's because I compile it without compressing the executable so it's less provable that it'll get flagged by antiviruses.

The donation wasn´t ment to be money for fixing the problem. It was for GridMove itself, since i used it every day.
Redonated it, please keep it!
Thanks  :D

Hi.

I'm sorry, but I have absolutely no time to keep GridMove up to date.
I've looked into the problem you mentioned, but apparently it's related to windows 7 protecting GridMove from accessing other windows. If you're interested in looking into it, I can tell you what you can try.

You may install autohotkey (http://www.autohotkey.com/), download the source code for gridmove (http://jgpaiva.dcmem...ridMove/GridMove.zip) and edit the "GridMoveP1.ahk" file by right-clicking it.

At the beginning of the file, there's this line:
  CaptionSize += BorderSize
This sets that height to '24' (at least in my computer). You can set it to a larger value this way:
  CaptionSize := 50

Unfortunately, in my computer this still doesn't fix it, gridmove doesn't grab the mouse. Maybe if you compile the script and run it as administrator it might get fixed, but I'm not really sure and I don't understand enough of windows 7 to be able to fix it.

Sorry

(I have returned your DC credits since I couldn't really fix the problem)

I have split this post from the main gridmove topic since it's offtopic.

To be honest, I have no idea how to do this, especially with gaming windows (which don't really behave like regular windows).
Maybe someone here on DC will know...
533
Hi!

Actually, I like this idea very much, and have been trying to have time to implement it ever since you made this post.
Unfortunately, it seems like I'm not having much time to do it.

However, I want to think you very much, because now I was trying to find a way to do what you're asking for really quickly and I think I have just found out the cause of the biggest bug in GridMove (it's been there since the beginning and it has tormented me a lot, but now thanks to you I've figured it out!).

So, to thank you for your help, I'll try to release a new version of GridMove during the next week (can't do it today because I have a paper deadline monday).

Thanks a lot!
534
Hi Doug!

1 - You can find more grids here.

2 - yep, there's an option for that. Check the tray options -> FastMove Shortcut, or something like that (I'm at work now, don't have GridMove here).

Hope that helps
535
Cool nudone, glad to know it's working for you ;)
536
No, this is supposed to be a full version (unless I was using that irrational numbering scheme of KDE where the 'X.0' versions mean beta/alpha).
But with free software (to be fair, with ALL software - free software only suffers more from this syndrome because it doesn't have such extensive testing), you really never know if the developer didn't add a few more bugs to the code when fixing others :)
537
AndyM: has it been working well for you? Then it probably won't make any difference.
I also corrected a few lines of code that looked like a bug, but if you haven't noticed it, then probably this update will be pretty much the same :)

SingingBoyo: actually, I'd say that with free software, if what you have now is working, you probably don't want to update: the developer might have introduced new bugs :P
538
It's incredible!

After 3 years of no updates, here's dialogMove 2.0!
It's so good that we jumped past 1.9 :P

Actually, it's pretty much the same, except that now it works on multiple screens!
Go get it right away :P

DialogMove v2.0 updated 24-04-10:
moves windows smaler than a given size to a place closer to the mouse position.

Hi!

I can see what you mean.
GridMove was originally designed for win XP, and apparently windows 7 behaves a bit differently from xp with the title bar height.
When I have some time, I'll look into it.
540
Thank you for your effort!
Let's see if it gets solved :)

[edit]
I've just noticed that what's flagged is "autohotkey", the language gridmove is built on... Sorry to see that, it means every program compiled with it gets that flag :(
541
:(
It is a false positive.
And unfortunatelly I have already compiled GridMove without binary compression, which means there really isn't much I can do...
542
If the grid comes up when you press win+g, then it should be working. When you press win+g, you can move a window by typing the number of the grid you want the window to move to.
As for the grid not appearing then you drag... Could you try dragging the window close to the left icon, or trying dragging it with the middle mouse button?
543
Hi Rachel,

Sorry that's happening. There should be no problem in windows XP, I think. Could you try pressing windows key and 'g' at the same time to see if the grid comes up?

General Software Discussion / Re: on OS updates and breakage
« Last post by jgpaiva on February 06, 2010, 08:05 PM »
I've used windows for 10-15 years and I can't remember having any problem with an update breaking anything.
I've been using ubuntu for about a year now and I've had two or three minor problems with updates (the most recent I recall was with the sound getting messed up). However, those got fixed with the next update (which didn't take more than a few days). I also had a few problems with software incompatibilities (specially with compiz+multiple monitors), and those didn't get fixed up to today, afaik.

On the other hand, I've found ubuntu's forums to be very responsive, and I've seen genuine interest in getting bugs fixed from the bugtracker. Unfortunately, IMO there's a lack of manpower and will to fix the annoying bugs, even if they look as simple fixes.

In conclusion, I think with Windows you get other kind of guarantees. Although linux will get you the cutting-edge, up-to-date technology with constant support in some stuff, it'll only be on the stuff that the developers find interesting to fix, since most don't think from a user point of view.

@Deozaan: yep, the most recent version of Ubuntu moved to a new bootloader (or was it just an update of grub? can't remember) and it also broke my instalation, I had to reinstall. AFAIK, that problem was fixed with an update launched the following day, though.

I have to show my support for Josh's words, since recently I have several times refrained from posting replies to topics in order to avoid such discussions with Tuxman and I would really appreciate it if he had a more positive approach to posting on DC.

rjbull: it's www.pastecopy.net (in the topic title).

ron: I'm not sure I understand what you mean, do you want a clipboard manager that allows you to paste several clips at once?
I remember using Clipboard Help+Spell and ditto a few years ago and really really liking them... I'm not sure if any of those does what I think you're asking, though.

qubeex: I think you're most definitely looking for skrommel's NoClose, IIRC it was created just with what you asked in mind.

I've been using the new version in GridMove since the last release (January 11 or something like that).
I tested it in a virtual machine before and it worked great! ;)

JGPaiva's GridMove and Ahk Tools / Re: separate user profiles
« Last post by jgpaiva on January 22, 2010, 04:36 AM »
Just downloaded the new update (1.19.62) and it seems to be working fine with the multiple profiles.
Cool :)

Also, a note about the gridmove.exe.ini path, on Vista and Server 2008, the path is "C:\Users\[Username]\AppData\Roaming\DonationCoder\GridMove\", or "%AppData%\DomationCoder\GridMove\".
Yep, that was the intended behavior. Please also be aware that from what I was able to find, GridMove needs administrative privileges in windows 7 (and probably Vista too) to be able to move some windows.
