General Software Discussion / Re: DVCS ?

Does it have any value other than just looking damn cool?

Looks more like a tool to do art than work ;)

More and more i'm thinking the best first thing we could do for DC health overall might be to move to a real CMS system for the site (leaving the forum unchanged as SMF).

With the rest of the site set up as a CMS, we could easily have a proper download area where authors could update their own entries, providing a logical software organization area, and just in general make it much easier for different people to maintain and update.

I fully agree!

About two weeks ago the 24th of May was mentioned for the day when the store should be back online. But that is now already a week ago.

The store's still not back up, or is it?

So did these API's come with usage restrictions? Which were not technically enforced by Google?

Sounds weird to me (especially from a company like Google).

Found Deals and Discounts / Re: Zentimo upgrade offer $9,- until 2011-05-29
« Last post by phitsc on May 30, 2011, 02:48 AM »
But last years give-away, non-upgradeable, version does work fine over here ;D

It does indeed. When I checked what has changed since then, it didn't seem to offer anything worth spending even the 9$. Although I have to admit, the SW would probably be worth 9$ to me, if I did not have it already (but then it wouldn't be an upgrade). The problem with this kind of SW is that it's not something you usually use very often, but when you need to use it, it is quite handy.

I'm surprised not more people want discounts. What's wrong with discounts?

Another interesting article on Dropbox insecurity.

Hm, kind of dilettantish. It fits though. Thanks for sharing.

I was thinking / playing around with something similar recently. Basically, what I want is make use of the feature DuckDuckGo calls zero-click. Google and Yahoo have it as well, although I don't know if they have given it a name (they probably did). When you use one of these search engines, they will show some info relevant to your search which is not a URL search result item right at the top. I think these are perfect for use within FARR. E.g. I want to type stuff like:
alias 10€ to $
alias translate donation to german
alias 123 * 456
etc.

I want an alias like search offering searching for a supplied phrase in both google and duckduckgo, but show the result in FARR's internal html view (like igo does). Actually, I've made an alias that does just that, but there are certain things that don't seem to work as expected. I'll make a separate post describing my findings.

Is this guy logging in to google without https? I didn't even know that was possible.

And looks like too much effort to get at a password that is: test ;)

General Software Discussion / Re: The Ribbon strikes again!
« Last post by phitsc on May 26, 2011, 06:34 AM »
I've been using Word 2007 quite a bit lately and have actually started to appreciate Ribbons. Most of my complaining about them is gone. After getting used to them and learning a bit where to find stuff I think they actually are superior to menus and toolbars for some kinds of application.

One thing that really helped me was reading about why Ribbons are how they are, e.g. this article:
http://msdn.microsof...ibrary/cc872782.aspx

There are still a few things which I don't like about Ribbons, e.g. how much vertical space they use. What annoys me most is that galleries are not semi-transparent. When they actually cover what you want to live-preview, it kind of misses the point.

Definitely the gadget!

Most of the time, I'm not actually using any apps. My gadgets just lie here around me. I look at the little cuties and I'm happy. The apps just suck. They don't do anything useful. They freeze my gadget or crash. They look ugly. They suck the precious juice out of my gadgets; even when I'm not actually using them! Then I need to put my lovely gadgets on a leash, and they don't like that. Some of the apps also make my adorable gadgets angry (I know that, because they get so hot).

I really think me and my gadgets would be better off without these stupid apps 8)

So is Ryan a special form of Brian? Or is Brian just what people understand when you tell them your name?

I guess $185,000 is a bit much just to have a TLD matching your last name. Maybe if you've got a veeeery big family and collect money from everyone ;)

An application with the same purpose I was once using had the following nice feature: the tray icon visually showed how much interval time had passed (or was left, can't remember). Can't remember the resolution either, maybe steps of 10 to 20% interval time (i.e. 5 to 10 different tray images).

Good point. I was assuming that you'll not have to pay for this month anyway and you'll get an extra 60 days. But you're right, I guess the other 30 days are to compensate for the outage.

I'm not blown away by the list of games either by the way.

What about if you already own those games and pay for PSN+. Do you have a right to complain then?

Some right maybe ;). You'll at least get this:

4. Existing PlayStation Plus subscribers will be given 60 days free subscription.

I've personally solved my "Games won't start"-Problems by switching from PC Gaming to Console Gaming ;)

Doing that also fixed some other problems:
- No need to always think about if there's a faster CPU for my motherboard
- No need to think about how I can justify spending that much money on a new GPU
- Don't have to come up with cooling for that new GPU that isn't so damn loud

Hey, that's exactly my problem ;)

- She goes, comes back with all kinds of broken stuff
- Me, looking through all that stuff: nah, can't use it to fix this, nah, can't use it to fix that, ...

The sugru product site has some hacks related to that product. I've bought some of that stuff, because it looked so cool. I have to admit though that I haven't used it yet. And it needs to be used within 6 months they say, so I really gotta have a look at these hacks ;)

sugru is like modeling clay when you take it from its pack. Once it's exposed to air, it cures to a tough flexible silicone overnight using the moisture in the air.
