Hmm...how about a portable app updating utility?  How would one go about doing that?

I am with Superboy on this one!  An excellent idea to make a list of must haves.  Off the top of my head I would vote for any or all of Nirsoft's programs.  Also System Explorer and CCleaner are must haves for me.

I would use portable apps more but having to constantly update them can be a real pain in the butt.   :(   Of course, I guess updating them isn't mandatory.   :D

what i'd really like to do is come up with something so that LBC and FARR can parse the portable-app-collection formats, so that you can use LBC and FARR as a drop-in replacement for those portable app menu launchers without doing any special configuration.

that may mean including a set of pre-defined launchbars with different category icons and looks that users can choose, that could be provided by people on the dc forum.

using FARR instead of a launcher would be awesome.  I have FARR installed on most of my computers that I use on a regular basis.  I looked at LBC sometime back so I will have to revisit it again.

General Software Discussion / Portable apps suites - is there a good one?
« Last post by techidave on September 06, 2010, 08:48 PM »
The last couple of days I have been looking at Liberkey and PortableApps suites as a way to get some good tools on a usb stick.  I have tried both of them before but it seems to be over my head as how to install them on my flash drive.

So this  brings up the question of is there one out there that is easy to install to the flash drive and also easy to add other apps to it?

I would like something that autoruns when I plug the flash drive into a computer which is what I am having problems with.  It needs to autostart no matter what the drive letter would be on any machine.

I tend to install USBDLM on most of my machines and maybe that is the problem??

So what does my friends at DC use?

actually if you are on xp pro, you can go to gpedit.msc and tell it to allow blank passwords.  I forget exactly where it is but could look it up if need be.

Living Room / HOSTS File for malware prevention
« Last post by techidave on August 21, 2010, 02:35 PM »
I have been reading about the use of the HOSTS file to prevent malware, etc., from getting on  your computer.  I am having trouble determing if Firefox and Opera use the HOSTS file like IE does.  how does the HOSTS file supplied by mvps.org differ from that of Spyware Blaster or Spybot's Search and Destory Immunize feature?

I am trying to figure out if the HOST file is a good way to prevent malware on computers??

How does this differ from Restricted Sites (probably IE only)?

are you selecting the "hide when inactive" or the "always hide" in the dropdown box?

You can hide the tray icons in xhttp://www.online-tech-tips.com/computer-tips/how-to-hide-system-tray-icons-in-windows-xp/ also.  I do it all the time.  here are the instructions.

Citrix is an expensive item.  Our school looked briefly at it 5 or 6 years ago.  For our 100 machines or so it would have been $20,000 to implement it.  Why, supposedly so we could use our older, slower machines and save money cause we wouldn't need machines with hard drives and cd drives.

Give me a break, I still used the older, slower machines without a whole lot of problems.  But there are quite a few schools that do use it.  They must have deeper pockets than our school does!   :(

sorry, I didn't mean to hijack this thread.

You are correct, Curt.  But the real question was has anyone out there in DC land used any of this stuff before?  The OP probably didn't have the question stated very clearly.

General Software Discussion / power management software - free
« Last post by techidave on July 31, 2010, 02:48 PM »
does anyone know of any kind of power management software that will work on a network?  for windows machines using windows server 2003 with active directory. something free, open source, or low cost would be great!

Actually want something that will give me a central control over the power settings on the other computers on the network.  They are running Win XP Pro SP3

i have looked at the demo on www.absolute.com/power but it does way more than what I want.

I will have 110 computers this year (down from the last year).  with our declining enrollment, we need to pinch pennies anywhere we can.  by the way, we are a K-12 public school here in the heartland of the United States (Kansas).

thanks in advanced,
dave

skwire,
two things I would like to see added to your program.

1.  the ability to save the result
2.  to export it to excel.

I don't know if these are possible or not.    :) :)

I remember looking at these about 7 years ago when I first started at the school.  I don't remember which ones I tried but I do remember settling on Windows Messenger just because it was already installed.

In searching the only familiar ones were Bopup Messenger.  I will see if I can remember though.

not really.  someone suggested that I rip them as mp3s because they weren't  bothered by DRM so much.

doesn't help much when its been ripped as a wma and you cannot find the original cd.  :(
