In this case, it is best, since some controls were changed to use Unicode ones. Uninstalling will remove the old ones

>By the way, I was watching that video in the download directory showing how the html pane content can appear right under the outliner item.  That was cool!  Is that available yet or is that coming in the future?

It was de-activated in 0.9.21 for now. It was not fluid enough, did not print, etc. Basically buggy.

The idea was to provide some improved text outlining.

In real text ouliners you can have this:

Chapter 1
Some chapter 1 introductory text ....
   Section 1.1
      Some section 1.1 text
   Section 1.2
Chapter 2

and collapse to show just:

Chapter 1
   Section 1.1
   Section 1.2
Chapter 2

Now Ecco and SQLNotes cannot do that (no way to hide the chapter 1 introductory text without hiding the Sections 1.1 and 1.2). The new approach will be to display the section text as a regular item. It will be much more fluid, elegant, will print, etc. Only drawback is that items do not WYSIWYG all HTML codes, only the most basic ones.

If I were you I'd think of each grid as a regular, hierarchical notetaking program like Mybase, Texnotes, whatever...where the outliner is the tree and the HTML pane is where the note goes.

That's one way. But Jim is looking for an Excel/database replacement. He way want to omit the HTML Editing pane altogether and concentrate on the grid and forms.
Think of each grid as a separate spreadsheet. Columns are fields. Rows are items.
If you already have a spreadsheet with the info, half of the work is done:
- Save it as CSV
- Create a grid (any name will do, but I recommend to avoid spaces, etc)
- Import it into SQLNotes. In the field mapping step (step 2), select the mapping b/w Excel and SN fields AND add a line: 1     YourGridName. This will add the imported data into your grid.

PPL, since I started using SQL, I've created a few test files.  But now I want to combine the data in those files into one main file.  How can I import grids (and the data inside the grids) from one file to another?
I was waiting for that one. You can't right now. :(
I'll modify the Ecco Pro importer to import SQLNotes files.

Expect it in a few days at most.

[edit] BTW If you really need to, select the grid items, CTRL-C to copy. Paste in Excel. Save as CSV and re-import in SQLNotes (ugly...  )

Version 0.9.21 is released. Major additions are:

    * Quick Search window. Hit CTRL-Q, start typing to filter the list of items. When done, hit Enter to display the items in the search grid. Simple and quick!
    * New examples
    * User settable phone number recognition
    * Improved Ecco Import

Some controls were changed to use Unicode versions, so it is required to un-install any previous version before installing this update.

See Release Notes at www.sqlnotes.net for details.

This does sound like a perfect match for SQLNotes. From what you describe, UltraRecall may also be a good solution.

The documentation (http://sqlnotes.wikispaces.com/) has a few examples of how to create databases using SQLNotes. The Basketball one was done for superboyac. I'm more than willing to create a similar one for your needs. It would help you and other potential users on getting started.

As superboyac once said, SQLNotes is like Access for non-programmers.

It is also evidently a Ecco Pro sequel...

But as can be read here: http://www.outliners...om/topics/viewt/589/ it is also evolving to be a modern GrandView 8)

OK, cards on the table - I was in the same boat as Jim, but hadn't posted/contacted you to that effect  :-[ - your instructions to him above have enabled me to start using SQLNotes

I'll try to be a productive member of the beta team from now on!
And there is nothing like a live phone call to get you going. The offer holds for everyone! Just ask superboyac (and numerous others at www.sqlnotes.net) if that was useful. [email protected]

Pierre, what exactly do you mean when you say free while it's in beta? Do beta users get some sort of discount? And do you have a price range in mind?

Ive tried an early beta some time ago but havent had the chance to fully test it. But a big feature i look for in a note taking software is portability. Does it already have, or is this planned?

It is free to use. Period.

The released product will be available under 2 licences. The Personal licence will be $50 approx. but cannot be used for work. The price of the full licence hasn't been set just yet.

Active beta testers will get a free personal licence.

The current version requires installation. I'm working on a version that can run from a USB drive.

Jim,
It all depends what you want to do. For notetaking, do as I just said.

If you want to build a database, you'll need to create fields first.
(View>Manage Fields>New. Give it a name, select a type. Click Save. Repeat for other fields

Doc on fields is here : http://sqlnotes.wikispaces.com/Fields

Wow!  Just installed the latest beta - looks pretty powerful.

Shame I have no earthly idea what I am doing with it, though. Create a new field and all I can do with it is give it a name and say it's text or number, etc. Field length? Can't find where they're assigned & I just searched for it for an hour. I read through the entire thread and see that no one else has questions like that.

I think I'm not ready for this one.
Hi Jim,
Think of it as a notepad. Create a grid (View > Grids > New grid). Name it and start entering information in this notepad. Everything you put in this notepad, gets put in a field with the same name
To view what you've put in these notepads, either open them (view>grids>Notepad xx) or double-click on the field with the same name (in the properties pane -- F4)

These is much more to it, but this will get you started

> I see that right now, each line represents an item and it's fields. How would you show multiple lines?

I show it that way to show more items. You can resize the line to show more if you want.

As to highlighting found text, yes, I'm waiting on some improvements by the grid manufacturer for that one
I also want to add radio buttons to select the field type to search (text, date, numbers)

Here's an idea for searching in SQLNotes.  It may be asking a lot, I don't know how hard or easy it would be to implement, but it's just something I thought of:
I keep thinking about EverNote and how I still want to continue using it despite the power that is available in SN.  And it keeps going back to one thing: it's just so easy and so fast to find something ESPECIALLY when you have no idea where to look.  So, i was thinking that it would be nice if SN had a special "search" module or window.  Inside this search window would be a complete list of all the data inside the database, unabridged, with all the fields and everything.  Just a massive, unorganized view of the entire database.  Then there would be on search box (like evernote), and you just go in it and begin typing what you're looking for, and as you type the list gets shorter and shorter until you find what you're looking for.  I can go into more detail, but that's the basic idea.

Try the latest build. I've added a quick search window.
- CTRL-Q to activate
- Start typing. The list will automatically get filtered
- Hit enter to display the items in the search grid

QuickSearch.jpg
Thanks for the idea. A great addition.

BTW I want put the Quick Search text box in the menu (after Help). It is more complicated, so for now it will be in the pop-up window

Carol: some 32-bit software might break, but I haven't seen that myself.

FYI, On the Ecco Pro Yahoo group, users have reported that Ecco Pro 4.01 (latest version, a 32 bit app) does not run on Vista 64

Thanks also J-Mac, I've taken a good note of your comments. For a short reply, I'd say it is extensive!

@superboyac: Glad to see that you find it useful.

Organizational tools: 4 done, 5 todo:

- done: (1) tree, (2) multiple parents and (3) through fields (folders/categories), (4) show/hide the hierarchy/parents
- todo: (1) UI friendly tags, (2) item links list, (3) hyperlinks within the item text, (4) HTML pane hyperlinks to other items), (5) auto-assign based on field content

@ all others: no superboyac is not paid  for his reviews... but I think he really got hung up on SQLNotes after a live phone call to explain some of the concepts. That offer is available to anyone interested. [email protected] to fix a suitable time

PPL, will SQLNotes have any slowdown as the database grows larger?
I've noticed this with a lot of notetaking programs.  The speed of SQL is pretty good right now, and it's important that it doesn't slow down significantly because the program's power and flexibility is suited for keeping large databases in it.  Will SQL support storing additional content in the future, like displaying pictures and so forth, because things like that cause slowdowns.

SQLNotes is based on a database (JET 4.0) and will scale very well. My personal file (3.5 years of data) is nearly as fast as an empty one. One customer has 8 users linked to a central SQLNotes database. 20,000 items, 300,000 field values and it's still performing very well.

After release 1.0, I'll also work on using alternative back-end engines (SQL Server/Express, SQLite, MySQL) which will further improve scalability.

SQLNotes already support pictures in the outline and in the HTML editing pane [edit] and of course in the Image Viewer panes [/edit]. In both cases, these are links to files (except HTML pane showing MHT/EML files). Embedded pictures could be added too if users request such a feature.

I see that Wikipedia mentions the slowness of Tiddly Wiki based programs, which is likely to be especially troublesome in Mozilla-based browsers.  I'm interested, but slow I don't need.  I'll be following this thread to see what kind of experience others have.
Tiddly Wikis are javascript and (generally) XML based. Since they don't use a database to store the content (unlike real Wikis), they don't scale very well. They'll work fine at first, but will get slower and slower as it grows.

All paid versions and all better at some things than the others, but none that seem to do it all well.
Someday I'll find that perfect note-taker!
Would you care to share what are the relative weaknesses of each of these 3 ?

Well, sounds like you're working on it as fast as possible.  I bought Calendarscope last night anyway.  It's the best calendar ever.
Good for you. You'll be able to feed me with great ideas for the SQLNotes calendar  ;D

Yes colored box around the date selector number is possible
As to a date, all I can say is that I'm working on it. Perhaps for Xmas. Key criteria are complete integration with SQLNotes and that it be fast!

Date selector: I don't like the one that is bundled. Will most likely use a different one
Day bar height: I'll check on that. [edit] The Office 2000/2003 themes are nicer for that aspect
I checked and...: the date selector can be color coded and the Day bar can be customized

Yes there is an option not to compress week-ends in month view.

pricing: I see $39.95 on their web-site... That is expensive? If that software is useful, isn't worth the price of a few CDs, a day skiing, a dinner at the restaurant, a tank-full of gas, etc ???  ;)

Date selector: I don't like the one that is bundled. Will most likely use a different one
6-day display: That is possible. Customize the 5-day view to display 6 days
Day bar height: I'll check on that. [edit] The Office 2000/2003 themes are nicer for that aspect

PPL, I was recently thinking about buying a calendar software.  But since SN is going to have it, I may hold off on it.  Do you think you can give a sneak preview screenshot of it for us here?
There is a demo in the download area of www.sqlnotes.net (an Outlook UI-like). An Ecco-like grid calendar is also coming
