PS ha, ha... Just did an update check via help - check for updates online (ctrl-u) in Art Rage and got the same message that Curt posts above. I had to go into help - about to confirm that I have 2.5.13 installed:

Art Rage 2.5 about screen-small.PNG

Strange Curt - I managed to upgrade for free about a week or so ago. Have you tried clearing your web browser cache and restarting it? Just a thought... Also, check out their user's forum here. There are at least two threads shouting the praises of 2.5!

Yes this is working for me too, though I had to increase my desktop heap by 2096 to get my system stable (I initially went the conservative route and added Ed Bott's suggested 1024 but experienced the problem again later in the day). I've been trouble free for a week, knock on wood.

Thanks, PhilB66, for stepping into the breach with that!

This ties right in with the discussion of the saying "I'm saving so much money I'm going broke"!

EDIT: corrected missing hyperlink - thanks to jgpaiva for pointing it out to me!

What About Avanced Find and Replace. I trialed it at some point... Seemed really competent.
$29.99.

(But, hey, I'm not a developer... yet  :) )

I like it and the developer is active on his own support forum, which helps! I also have a licence for PowerGrep (I used my PhD research as a justification for the the cost) and it is amazing. For searches I use FileLocator Pro or Archivarius, for simple and quick replacements AFR and for complex stuff PowerGrep. I know I could do it all with a combo of PowerGrep and Archivarius, but variety is, as they say, the spice of life. Life is spicy...

Are you sure X1 is free?  I thought those days were over; 50 bucks.

AFAIK/CT from the forum, there will continue to be a feature limited free version available.
5208
I think the discount's over.
The site doesn't accept the code today (which is well after the stated expiration date of 20th July).
-cranioscopical (July 31, 2007, 05:38 PM)

True, very true, but at a nickel under 5 bucks WITHOUT the discount, I still consider it a steal (or should that be "steel"? I kill myself...  :P)!
5209
Give RecoverMyFiles a whirl - it might just be able to do this. *.qex is not listed in their supported file types, but they recover every type of financial file type under the sun, including a large number of Quicken files types, so I'd be willing to bet that it will do it. I don't have any way of testing it on my system so can't be sure!

Ha, ha - very nice Curt, and congratulations!  8)

I know nothing about Surfulater, but note that it is going to be on offer at a discount here soon (sorry - read about it this morning and cannot now find the link!).

Thanks Wordzilla!

I'm with Allen on this issue, too. I have irrational loathing of Apple/Mac that has nothing to do with anything other than a dislike of being told that X is better than Y by zealots.

I know nothing about Surfulater, but note that it is going to be on offer at a discount here soon (sorry - read about it this morning and cannot now find the link!). Maybe this will fit the bill? It's an excellent notetaker in addition to checking webpages for changes and (I think) organizing your bookmarks. Might be worth a look anyway...
5214
Ken - allow me to add my voice (text?) to what Carol is saying. You will not be disappointed with ArtRage Pro AND you'll spend the next few months feeling guilty about having stolen it for $19.95. I kid you not!

I'm still on 1.6. M2 is nice, but I don't find it as easy to use as M1.6. Like Curt, I'll be waiting to see what updates bring...

General Software Discussion / Re: Serif DrawPlus 50% Off
« Last post by Darwin on July 31, 2007, 11:41 AM »
I used it (and PagePlus) many years ago in an earlier version and it was good solid stuff.

The main reasons I ditched it in the end was the awkward activation system and the total barrage of spam they churn out (both via email and snail mail). Once you are on their mailing list it can be very difficult to get off again and they don't just send stuff about related matters - my letterbox was really hammered and my postman treated for a hernia!

Maybe things are better these days - but I won't be buying anything again from them.
-Carol Haynes (July 27, 2007, 06:34 PM)

Er, no. The spam isn't so bad now but the activation system STINKS. If you don't activate a purchased copy you get a nag screen every time you start the app. You have to CALL in to activate. Sure, it's toll free but 1. it took me three months to get through and 2. it's a ploy to subject you to a hard sales pitch for manuals, other Serif software, and third party software.

Software is solid, though...

Wales - keep your eye on Ashampoo's Office 2006. It's the same product as the SoftMaker version and is priced the same but I've seen it on sale for as little as $4.99. They let you choose your currency as well...

General Software Discussion / Re: Collectorz.com
« Last post by Darwin on July 31, 2007, 10:22 AM »
I am interested to see how the company deals with these same issues regarding the Book Collectorz software that was recently upgraded to version 5.0.  Once again they are asking for an upgrade fee, again with free upgrades for users who purchased the software before November 14.  I have emailed Mark-Jan to ask how this will be resolved in light of earlier discussions about their site indicating free lifetime upgrades after the November 14 cutoff date.  I have high hopes that it will be resolved in a positive manner.

So far, all seems quiet... I have a lifetime licence and it was honoured without any drama (and very quickly, too!).

General Software Discussion / Re: Software to AVOID!
« Last post by Darwin on July 31, 2007, 10:16 AM »
well the company i mentioned here has discovered the error of their ways so i will remove this as far as i can.
You shouldn't remove a post because a company "has discovered the error of their ways" - better to strike-through the complaint, and then have a non-strikethrough notice under stating that they've nicened up. It's always good to see when somebody learns from their mistakes...

Yup - have to agree with this. I'd still like to know what their track record is and make a decision that takes it into account...

General Software Discussion / Re: Favorite ZIP/RAR application?
« Last post by Darwin on July 31, 2007, 10:14 AM »
Thanks for the head's up, Renegade. I'll take a look at the beta. I took advantage of your first offer of an AlZip Pro licence and have never regretted it. It's simple, quick, and light yet powerful. I won a WinRar licence here some time ago and am using it as my main archiver but AlZip is always a click away... and there are times when I need it, having Korean friends and family sending me stuff in *.alz format.

I think Evernote's big strength, at least in my usage, is in saving webpages. I like it for saving things like purchase receipts. For notetaking, I use both TexNotes Pro and ZuluPad Pro. TexNotes Pro is great but in my opinion overly complex and ultimately will probably get the boot. I'm curious about Zoot, though... Looks interesting. Zoot meets Archivarius would be AWESOME as I am an Archivarius fan as well. It's emphasis is on text and speed...
5223
X1 v.6 is in beta and will be released both as a free, functionally limited version and as shareware ($50). If they manage to tame the beast a bit and resolve the Outlook issues that I've noted in the past, I might be tempted to go back, at least on my wife's notebook. I'm still liking Archivarius a lot. It's not as slick as the other players, especially X1, but I love it's small footprint and speed.

... exemplifies the expression: "I'm saving so much money I'm going broke"!

tell me..

Sorry, Curt, hadn't noticed this request for clarification when it was posted. The expression means that one spends all of their money on items that are on sale! You know how it is when you go into a grocery store to buy milk and bread and you walk out with three bags of junk food because it was all on sale? Money that you didn't intend to spend, spent on items you didn't need in the first place. So, by jumping at all of the money saving offeres ("saving money") you wind up spending all of your money and thus break your bank ("go broke").

Hope that's clear...

Hi all,

Tom (tomos) and I had a lovely vist at Grotte Scladina and a great time in Bouillon, touring the Chateau of Godfroy de Bouillon, the first Christian King of Jerusalem. The guy was a real boy scout... He looted all of the churches in the area to help fund his campaign. At any rate, without further ado, here is a picture of us together in an area that formerly contained a large chapel but which was given over to stables in the 18th century and today serves as a theatre for a falconer's show:

So, who's who - anyone care to hazard a guess?
