It's funny how "can" and "should" often collide.
5202
What would you say if you saw a old midget in a wheelchair with his face painted brown and a blue mohawk haircut with a riding crop and a dog leash on a tall blonde woman with the back of her mohawk dyed black as she wears net stockings, a short miniskirt, a low cut blouse revealing massive tits, in boots that you'd expect to see on an astronaut, martian antennae stuck to her forehead, with her hands handcuffed behind her back, while they're crossing the street at a crosswalk?

I could barely look at it at first, but I think you're right when I look at it again. Good eye!

To get back to NBC and the Olympic coverage, the BBC has this to say :London 2012  ;D

I found this interesting:

BBC One controller Danny Cohen said the Games had been seen by the "largest TV audiences since the pre-digital age".

3 Kinds of Lies:

  • Lies
  • Damn lies
  • Statistics :D

;D

Premise one - Nothing is better than ice cream,
Premise two - Crackers are better than nothing,
Conclusion - Crackers are better than ice cream.

I'd stick that in as a red herring. i.e. The topics of discussion are entirely different. You can rewrite them and sub in the appropriate meaning:

1) There is not another thing that is better than ice cream.
2) Crackers are better than not having anything.

You can't get to the conclusion from those 2.

But this gets to one of the big problems in modern medicine (allopathic medicine) - epidemiology. It's basically just statistical analysis.

most psychiatrists still use the older terms and believe that there are definite differences between them.

Mine does. Ooops... inner voice, outer voice... Not doing very well with that today...

I think someone (or maybe me) has already posted something from Instructables, but I was having a look at the site after a friend posted a pic of a project on FB.

The site has DIY (do it yourself) instructions on a truckload of things, and tons of categories to pretty much make anyone salivate. Well, anyone who like to work on projects that is.

http://www.instructables.com/

There's even a STEAMPUNK category!

http://www.instructa...y/channel-steampunk/

Like, just how cool are these?

And a channel for Arduino:

A Twitter controlled pet feeder:

 :o

Or build an aquaponic veggie fish farm:

Way too many wicked projects there! :)

(I cannot wait to get back to Canada and get on top of some projects! Dying to do the gardening stuff!)

Living Room / ToS;DR => Terms of Service; Didn't Read - Very interesting site
« Last post by Renegade on August 13, 2012, 08:07 AM »
I think this is pretty much a MUST see for everyone:

http://tos-dr.info/

Terms of Service; Didn't Read
“I have read and agree to the Terms” is the biggest lie on the web.  We aim to fix that.
We are a user rights initiative to rate and label website terms & privacy policies, from very good class A to very bad class E
Work in Progress Get Involved!
ToS;DR is a young project started in June 2012. The data is subject to important changes. This is your opportunity to help us fix the “biggest lie on the web”: join us if you have information to contribute related to specific terms or if you have a comment, check out our guide:

Screenshot - 2012-08-13 , 11_05_38 PM.png

At a minimum, it helps to understand the TOS at a glance for rated services.

You have to respect transparency. It is sorely lacking in many companies. *coughGooglefined$22.5millionforlyingcough*

Officially there is no difference anymore. Both psychopathy and sociopathy have been combined under Anti-Social Personality Disorder (APSD) in the DSM-IV. Many shrinks now consider the terms to be synonymous, though a number of them still separate the two diagnoses.

My psychiatrist maintains that I'm... oh, hold on... inner voice, outer voice... Gotta keep those straight sometimes. :)

5215
^^ Ah - Never seen that before. I'll look for a longer clip as it seems pretty funny. :)

General Software Discussion / Re: my pc anywhere
« Last post by Renegade on August 13, 2012, 12:16 AM »
Another option is to get a portable drive and just run your Windows installation from it in a VM. You then don't need to muck around with networks (that are always ever so reliable right when you need them ;) ), and have it 100% available. You might want to make sure that you have a VM player ready to install on other computers though, and might want to check into one for Windows and Mac, and maybe Linux.

You will have some kinds of performance penalties as you're running a VM, but you would always have everything available, irrespective of network reliability or speed. This would make it possible to do things like play movies or music, which aren't practical using a remote desktop solution.

General Software Discussion / Re: Steam set to become app store
« Last post by Renegade on August 12, 2012, 11:11 AM »
I'm liking that there are more "app stores" opening. I like the idea of having more competition out there. It reinforces a degree of openness, and erodes the "walled garden".

I still think that the word App is being overused - what I usually think of when I think of Apps is a The Single Responsibility Principlew, i.e. something that does one thing well.  Those are the types of Apps I look for also.

I wrote a treatise on this issue a few years ago for Samsung Multimedia Solutions Center arguing against the incessant use of "app" and instead using "software" or "program" (etc.) as appropriate. (This was all for developer materials, and not end user stuff.) Alas, lost that one.

OT
"App" was/is just short for "application software", which is a very specific kind of software. It has since been applied as you describe - tiny, single feature software. But it's still a muddled word with no clear meaning at the moment. Apache is not an app. MySQL is not an app. SMF is not an app. Wordpress is not an app. etc. etc. The point is lost when marketers get involved and start pretending that they actually understand what they're talking about. "App" is a simple word for people though, and for end users, in that space, makes sense to use. For other areas? Cripes... Developers that have to use the word "app" for everything because they don't know the difference between client, server, and SaaS web applications, well... they represent one of the things that's wrong with the world - fundamental native language illiteracy.

Games are not application software. Pfft... Why can't people simply speak English properly? (I don't mean non-native English speakers who have an excuse.)

I came across a new term, "fusking". It's just URL hacking through brute force. We don't really need to invent new terms for everything, and we don't need to muddy existing terminology.

I like how Liz says "whet your appetite." How do you "whet" an appetite when 90% of the Pi community is already salivating in buckets? ;D

(Note: I'm stilllll waaaaitingggg... )

That. Is. Sexy. Stuff! :D

I already have plans for the Raspberry Pi, so I'm going to hold off on that one for now simply because I don't have the time. But man... I wish I did~! :D

Well, I'm not all that fast, but not too bad...

Raspberry Pi makes a great item for a giveaway/contest. I might even do one myself.

Very true. The problem with getting one is the wait. So, if you think ahead, you can have cheap giveaways that people will love! I'm still waiting for my second one to arrive.

General Software Discussion / Re: programming language for math
« Last post by Renegade on August 11, 2012, 05:10 PM »
I suppose some options are:

R (mostly for stats from what I've heard people talk about - not sure about performance)
C
Fortran (this is a Ferrari for performance)
Matlab (think of this as for prototyping)

The entire class of functional languages are well suited to math:

F#
Erlang
etc. etc.

Lisp is highly performant, and a darling in academia. Might be worth looking at.

But as f0dder said, the lowest level languages are going to take forever to program in. ASM (etc.) probably isn't worth even looking at. You can just buy more computing power, and it will likely be cheaper than your development time.
